Rwanda is to often praised for it's current stability, they constantly leverage their successes in that regard to downplay accusations of atrocities and exploitation in the DRC
Stability mostly because only one guy has been in power 20 years plus.

Two completely different countries, one has a 40 year longer average life expectancy, the corruption levels are lower than some European countries like Spain and Italy. The cleanest country in Africa. One of the safest countries in Africa. Easiest country to do business with in Africa or 2nd. 2nd or even the fastest growing economy in Africa, and at the start of 2023 THE FASTEST GLOBALLY, Paul Kagame has done the best he could, and rwanda in a few years will now become a middle income country thanks to paul Kagame and if development holds up in merely 2 more decades it will be a first world country or a rich economy. The issue is rwanda is landlocked so it's forced to either work alongside it's neighboring countries or find a way to get those resources to benefit itself especially since CONGO ISN'T DOING ANYTHING WITH THOSE RESOURCES TO BEGIN WITH.

I ones listened to profound explanation of what happened during and before of Rwandan genocide, and it was like 12 hours long lecture in total. I presume, the time afterwards are not less eventful, so condensing this into a 10 minutes video must have been a real struggle. Thanks, TLDR.

@@elfrjzit's a tragedy, DRC should be a head, I'm in the capital right now (Kinshasa) the capital alone has a long way to go and so does the rest of DRC. All I want to see from DRC is less wars, corruption and more progress on educating the population and more investment business in my country so the people can prosper and not suffer so much.

So more people from around the world can see that Congo has massive potential. It isn't all bad in my country, there's so much that can be done, but it (the country) lacks the will, courage to embrace that.

@@erfinder23first the people of Congo should stop voting for rubbish Congolese politicians, they should be voting for politicians that will truly invest in Congolese people and the infrastructure, they should heavily invest in education (that is key for their survival) and then with that intelligence they can make DRC 🇨🇩 prosper. The first leader of the country got killed by the CIA and replaced with an American puppet (Mobutu) and as soon as that was over Kagame and Rwandan started exploiting and corrupting Congolese politicians. Congo has been in a chokehold ever since Leopold II.

i studied with a man who was a refugee from Eastern Zaire/DRC. He had had his entire family, and most of his village killed by people from Rwanda as Hutus fled and reformed. it was a devastating time for the region.
But Hutus were the ones killing the minority Tutsis?

@@Kuricang31well , but that wasn’t the case before 90s , you see Congolese Tutsi ( banyamulenge ) were consider just another Congolese tribe until when Rwanda and it allies invaded Congo in the guise of chasing after Rwandan Hutus and started killing Congolese indiscriminately , when Congolese started fighting back to the surprise of most Congolese these Congolese Tutsi(banyamulenge ) allied themselves with Rwandans instead of their own country men , and that where this mentality of other Congolese not seeing them as not Congolese came from , as a result many of them were actually killed . What funny is many Congolese in East Congo are of the same ethnicity or mix ethnicity as Rwandan the only difference is linguistic, you see the types of Tutsi Congolese who aren’t viewed as Congolese are the ones that speak the languages that is close/ mutually intelligible to the kinyaRwanda which just happens to be one tribe that live close to Rwandan border (banyamulenge ), the funny part is all those languages in Central Africa are actually part of the same language family (Congo language family) , so one has to wonder where this divisive mindset came from . because it’s not about ethnicity, if it was Rwandan wouldn’t be fighting with Congo , especially Eastern Congo as that Region is much more ethnically similar than people think , people don’t realise how diverse Congo is . When people think of Congo they only think northern Congo or north west around the capital,the Lingala speaking Congolese and small extent south Congo . i went to congo in the early 90s and in eastern Congo if you go to places like baraka and Uvira which back than when I visited were 3 and 4 largest town/city just behind the state capital Goma and second bukavu you will realise very quickly those places have a large concentration of ethnically Tutsi Congolese but except they spoke different languages campare to Manyamulenge who lived close to the border of Rwanda , in fact those types of Congolese never view themselves in any relation to Rwanda even though many have same/mix ethnicity nor do they think of themselves as Tutsi, but just looking at them you literally can’t tell the difference with many Rwandan . So it weird that facts are distorted on purpose or due to lack of knowledge, especially when people talk about Congolese Tutsi they only talk about one tribe (banyamulenge)forgetting there are other tribes of ethnicity that just don’t called them self Tutsi that live in Congo just fine , we all know what causing instability in Congo yet we choose to talk nonsense, what worse is the fact because Congo has been ruled mostly by northern Congolese they don’t seem to care about the suffering of other Congolese, especially in eastern Congo .In fact many northern Congolese don’t even understand certain part of their own country and what goes on there , I mean what kind of government would allow their country to be invaded again and again with out being complicit . Also if Rwandan leadership continues to be used by westerner like they are to continue to cause instability in Congo soon or later it will backfire , westerners are not your friends all they want is to continue to exploit Africa as much as possible.

That was one of the best summaries of the first and second wars I've seen on CZcams. I used to live in the region and I've read most of the general audience books on the topic (and a few of the academic ones). I had a few minor quibbles but it's a very complicated history, and you guys did a great job. You even got Sudan/Khartoum right!
It's actually not, go ask a black dude who lives in Congo why Rwanda is always shafting them, simple, those groups do atrocities, change names, and get funded over and over again by the USA and Europe. Want to know why? so we can have slaves in the mines to get their resources. Good overview. Zaire is pronounced Zai-ear (like eye + ear). Two syllables :) Regarding the fighter jet - there were three. The first was in November last year and it touched down at Gisenyi in Rwanda. Another followed a couple of months later but didn't land. The third one was shot at and returned to Goma. The footage on the BBC of the one that was shot at was trailing smoke, so it was hit. I'm surprised to hear the video say it wasn't. My friend in Gisenyi saw it happen and she says it was definitely over Rwandan airspace. She survived Bosnia and the incident really shook her up. There's a huge amount of trade between the two countries. Rwandans cross to Goma daily for business. The borders are rarely closed for long. But I have friends who work in Goma and have been attacked and robbed for being Rwandan. One friend was pulled from a moto by a mob and had everything he was carrying taken. He was badly injured.
Don't bother they will continue to butcher the name, Europeans should stick with the name Congo or abbreviate the name to DRC.

There’s something eerily simular about Rwanda’s and Isreal’s relationships with their neighbours after a genocide, likely because both country’s have groups close by that might want a repeat of said genocide.

Africa is so huge and complex. Like a whole other world we hardly hear about. Tensions and conflcits almost never covered in the West.
You just have to know where to look. French-speaking media generally has better coverage on Africa, due to the extensive demographic, economic, cultural and linguistic ties that still persist to this day. France 24 in particular is a globally available news channel with solid reporting on African news, and all their content is available in English too.
Arab-speaking media also tends to have pretty good coverage, for similar reasons. Basically, seek out media from countries that have strong ties to Africa and you'll find decent reporting about the continent. And not just news either, but also educational and cultural content.

Excellent comprehensive analysis of the conflict between Rwanda and the DRC, Aa a MONUSCO Information officer from 2007-2012, I saw CNDP become M 23, and M 23 looked invincible until the SADC countries created the Rapid Response Force which defeated them in 2013.
Second Congo War was the most deadly war since World War 2
Good video for the most part. It really is hard to underscore how impactful the past 25 years have been for both countries. In the wake of the Cold War collapsing there was a lot of moving pieces in this region of the continent. The DRC was finally getting on its feet despite large scale exploitation by foreign powers and massive ethnic conflicts in the east and Rwanda was dealing with the aftermath of one of the largest organized genocides in the last 100 years. It really is difficult to rectify these issues. And it's not going to be an overnight solution. That's for sure. What can be said is external powers and local leaders need to be very careful with how they engage. The political withdrawal of a lot of foreign powers in Africa and the unwillingness to directly engage conflicts abroad has opened the door got many ill minded individuals to seize power in places they shouldn't be. One can only hope that this doesn't between an interventionist nightmare once again.
LMAO "foreign powers' have nothing to do with conflict. Africa was in a constant stae of ethnic warfare before any foreigner step foot in the continent. Its the same historical ethnic conflict we have seen for mellenia.

in western news rwandan genocide was depicted very onesided without this big picture that rwanda allied with those countries to try to attack or fund militias in DRC side... if those countries have democracy even a little bit, then people have a say there so abroad interference shouldnt be there to either side(that twists interests like we see elsewhere, getting western support is such strong motivation).
Russia should stay away from my country, we don't need russians coming to cause another problem in the DRC. But unfortunately (the russians, Wagner group I believe have already infiltrated DRC 🇨🇩).
I think the point people are missing here is that mass killing and war just feeds the never ending cycle of violence. People need to resolve problems socially, culturally, religious, ethnically, demigraphically, etc over time. The borders on the continent are arbitrarily drawn based on closed room deals in Europe over 150 years ago. That is countless disputes have only fueled the violence further. It's hard to get up off your feet when the world has spent the better part of history beating you while your down, but it's not impossible to get back up. Africa (generally speaking) and in this region particularly is host to some of the richest culture, societies, and languages imaginable. It's a shame to see it torn apart because of meddling influence in in such a competitive environment. The story of human progress is not one of being the biggest kid on the block, but in overcoming each obstacle in an effort to move forward. Peace is a hard pill to swallow in an area subject to such cruelty and violence by external powers, but it's one that can be done. It just takes time. Say what you will about history, but escalating to this kind of warfare is never good.

Writing from East Africa here. No offense, but the West has been really bad at effectively understanding why Rwanda would be involved. DRC is in no way ever going to be a client state of Rwanda, nor is there value in spending so much money on these incursions but for one thing-security against another genocide. Les Génocidaires stationed safely in Eastern DRC pose an existential threat to millions of Rwandese. If you’re Rwanda, you’ll do anything you can-including unwelcomed intervention across the border-to prevent another genocide. It breaks international law, but it’s entirely rational.
The cognitive disconnect is due to what each side VALUES the most. For Rwanda, the most VALUABLE thing is people’s lives. But to the West, the only VALUABLE thing in _‘the area’_ is minerals. That’s what they came for in the 19th century, and that’s what they’re still coming for today. Thus, anything that happens there they’ll instinctively try to explain in terms of ‘natural resources’ because that’s all they’ve got on their mind.

Blinken’s and the current administration’s support for Congo over the EAC is a catastrophic blow to American diplomacy that they are inflecting on themselves. As someone who’s studied the situation deeply it baffles me how bad the current admin has messed up.
They spent decades building up uganda and rwanda as military powers that could be the back bone of American power projection in the region giving america control over the ressource rich eastern Congo. Blinken comes in and sides with Congo not realizing that this has not only pushed the rest of the EAC closer to rwanda because they see how Congo does not want to sit down and the Kenyans in particular desperately want to avoid a war and the Ugandans have deep historical ties. They have also blown their strategy of controlling the eastern border of Congo which is much much more important than being friendly with the incredibly weak government in Kinshasa.
Like I get it’s bad for the people of rwanda but the pure stupidity of blowing up all their relations after so many people died in conflicts covertly involving the usa over the past 40 years really hurts my brain to watch, like how did we get all the dumbest people in the world in the whitehouse right after trump when everyone expected it. You would be correct if they went after the "genocidaire" of 1994 (who are largely gone btw) but thats not whats happening. There are scores of innocent women, elderly, children and innocent men who have been victims for RDF backed forces to get access to mineral reserves. How do you explain or justify "rationally" the mass rapes, extrajudicial killings and forced displacement of innocent civilians? They are not genocidaires yet they are being targeted by Rwandan backed militia's and RDF forces according to the mapping report. What does that have to do with preventing a genocide? Sounds like a lot of easily disproved propaganda your propagating and Rwandans know better then to justify the suffering of our brothers and sisters across the border for a liar like Kagame.

As a longtime viewer from Rwanda, I have major respect for how this channel addressed the situation. There's alot of murky information out there, and the general media seems to be siding with the DRC. So I'm always glad to see people addressing Rwandas position on it.
The drc backed troops aren't in rwanda, it's the other way round.

Didn't Paul Kagame shoot down Habyarimana's plane? My understanding of the situation is not complete so I'm not sure why he'd do that if that was a major catalyst for the genocide.
@@random-J No one said the DRC troops are in Rwanda. Rwanda hasnt been invaded by non-Rwandans at any point in recorded history. We have a saying, "uRwanda ntabwo ruterwa, uRwanda ruratera" which roughly translates to "Rwanda is not attacked, she attacks".
Because of our size in comparison to our neighbors, we can NEVER risk an attack from the outside. That's why we view the thriving genocidaires in Congo as an existential threat.

DRC for knowingly harbouring war criminals and Rwanda for the violence they are willing to commit to apprehend the genocide perpetrators. I was 14 when the genocide happened
I noticed Rwanda getting safer and safer over the decades from seeing it on TV.
In 2018 I travelled to Rwanda alone to see the wild mountain gorillas.
But after landing in Kigali at 10pm, by 8am the the next morning I was randomly heading to the unplanned country of Uganda with a californian guy.
We met up in kisoro Uganda with his Dutch friend and all saw the gorillas together on my 38th birthday.
I've stayed in touch with the Rwandan man who ran the hostel and looked after me and I'm invited to his wedding in the capital Kigali next year.
While I was in Rwanda I took a solo trip over to kibuya on Lake kivu.
Such a beautiful place
The lake is 30 miles long and 18 miles wide
The DRC borders one side and Rwanda borders the other side
All in all a great life experience
Rwanda is one of the safest countries not just in Africa, the fact that they can even manage to keep that security threat across the border for decades says more about the conflict itself. Those who don't know, that conflict is more attached to Corrupt Congolese government leaders who live 1000 km away and are not subjected to the effects of insecurities in that region unlike those in Rwanda. Also western countries and companies are so involved to keep getting minerals on cheaper cost where they just give few $$ to leaders and keep the conflict going on.

I can understand the point of DRC .When the Tutsi were chasing Hutu in the Congo they used the resources of the Congo as if they were in Rwanda . Also Rwanda seeks to make the DRC a market for its products, which poses a threat to local industries in the Congo

This conflict is more complex than how it seems. It involves US, EU and other powers. Neither Rwanda nor DRC controls it, they react to the will and plans of the powers who mines almost all major minerals in that region. For example, they just told you only 2 armed groups, but currently there are more than 150 known Armed groups in Eastern DR Congo, and most of them are set up by foreign companies to occupy a certain region where there is mineral reserves and the country mines them, Canadian companies, Chinese, French, American are all involved.
The conflict has been diluted into ethnic groups and more but the most part is mineral theft.

I am not Rwandan, but I've had a chance to visit Rwanda. When you go to the Genocide Memorials... You understand why small marginalization acts (like tribalism and nepotism) can lead to devastating results. It is impressive how Rwanda has managed to flip their situation to their current economic and political stability.
I am from a country where we have never had war; tribalism and nepotism are joked around but slightly affect us; democracy as a system seems to be respected and working, yet we are the second poorest country in the world. We are the poorest because of CORRUPTION (Politicians and Business Cartels dealing with the government).
My point is: If Rwanda was corrupt, it wouldn't have progressed and developed --from the war and genocide-- the way it has.
DRC will stay the same unless Tribalism and every other "ism", AND CORRUPTION are minimized OR completely eradicated. A Congolese is just a black man born in the DRC; a Rwandan is the same black man born in Rwanda; and so is every African.
A revolution will come against these corrupt African leaders, the same way it did against colonialism!...and it will be televised.

I think most people are not very well informed about this conflicts, Yes the Rwanda Genocide happened and some of Rwandese moved to congo, as we are talking now more than 12millions Congolese people died as the result of this conflict. It's stupid for outsiders to take a side in this conflict. The entire thing is incredibly complicated by cultural nuances and local understandings of things. No outsider really fully comprehends the history and customs that inform people's views of the matter today. And even within these communities there is serious disagreement and debate. This really is one of those almost incomprehensibly complex and unsolvable problems. We tend to think every problem has a solution - sometimes that's just not true.

Writing from East Africa here. The West has been really bad at effectively understanding why Rwanda would be involved. DRC is in no way ever going to be a client state of Rwanda, nor is there value in spending so much money on these incursions but for one thing-security against another genocide. Les Génocidaires stationed safely in Eastern DRC pose an existential threat to millions of Rwandese. If you’re Rwanda, you’ll do anything you can-including unwelcomed intervention across the border-to prevent another genocide. It breaks international law, but it’s entirely rational.

I think it’s important to highlight why M23 exists originally. Rwanda used to be bigger, so there are Congolese Tutsis there after DRC and Rwanda’s borders were re- created after colonisation. Thus when Hutu killers escaped after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, they started murdering Tutsis there. As Congolese Tutsis were often not considered Congolese by other Congolese ethnic groups, they did nothing to stop them (and sometimes supported them). This is how the Tutsi-majority militias were created. Congolese Tutsi citizens were being murdered, and no one cared. Still to this day they tell Congolese Tutsis-many of them who have been on the land they lived way before DRC even existed, to “go back to Rwanda”, when they are as much Congolese as the others historically.
Of course, I do not condone innocent Congolese people to be hurt in any way. I’m just extending the same for innocent Congolese Tutsis as well.
Almost none of Africa's internationally recognized borders represent the actual distribution of ethnic groups. It's incredibly sad the legacy arbitrary demarcation of African territory by mustachioed, inbred nincompoops over a hundred years ago has left.
There was no colonial borders before,plus Rwanda did not officially exist as a nation before Berlin conference anyways,so it was never a big country to begin with. During its time under German rule there was no tension with Congo,after World war 1 when Belgians took over Rwanda,there was still no tension with Congo as both colonies kept their borders. After independence 1960 ,DRC aka Zaire still kept its borders without conflict with Rwanda. It was not until after Rwanda genocide that Kagame found an excuse to invade Zaire and install a puppet in Kabila sr,so he can loot minerals. Fast forward to today,it’s the demand for coltan that has caused instability in DRC as Kagame is now link for Tech giants to get coltan in DRC for cheap since he uses M23 proxies to pillage for him. There is overwhelming evidence of him being involved in looting of coltan. Now DRC is tired of getting battered by a small nation enjoying support from the West,so they are planning to fight back. It’s payback time,make Rwanda pay for 26 years of theft,rape and murder.

This is a video I have seen that in my opinion came close to define the conflict without bias/ propaganda but you are right it misses to adress the root cause of M23/ CNDP being formed in the first place. Many journalist seen to ignore the blatant discrimination and systematic killings or forced to die in refugee camps in neighbouring countries of Congolese Tutsis; that in my opinion if addressed can help solve the issue in a sustainable manner.

This was a decent video but it’s missing discussion and the banyamulenge. Ethnically Rwandan, but fully Congolese people are at the center of this conflict and Congo insists that they are not citizens. Until that issue is resolved there cannot be peace with M23. What would you do if your family was expelled from your country and refused access to its home? Also militarized ethnic groups are extremely common in Congo, the media has just extensively covered the Rwandan one

@@1wun1 here's the thing: when the Belgians drew lines on the map to create present day congo, they took some lands which had belonged to the kingdom of Rwanda, and had ethnic rwandans living on them (now called rwandophones).
Other waves of rwandans went there after that either through forced and natural immigration or as refugees (fleeing the 1959-60s conflicts in Rwanda)
Some members of those two groups did send their kids to join the RPA in 1990, and some of them did cross the border back in Rwanda in the 90s to go home (for the ones from 1959) or flee the genocidal militias (for the rwandophones) who had fled to east congo after their defeat.
Now here lies the paradox: the Congolese do not recognize the difference between those two groups (both ethnic rwandans but some being cititenzs of congo and others citizens of Rwanda) and pushed for a "chase them all" campaign.
Those attempts by Congolese to chase the rwandophones or restrict their rights as citizens of Congo have resulted in conflict and will continue to.

The eastern DRC has been a thorn to the western part of the region since the 17th century, starting from Zanzibar slave trades that drag millions fleeing west and destabilising the Kongo region, leading to our defeat to the Portuguese and our colonisation from free European power.
Now it's this since the independence I honestly support the invasion of Rwanda, I hope every bakongo groups in the region gets involved, it will be the perfect way for us to regain political power in the region and an armed wall should be put on Drc's eastern side of rwanda. The DRC will need to increase its air power to have a chance of winning such a war, jungle warfare will eat ground troops. They need to get that Japanese treatment time six but with nitrogen.
As a Bantu myself I support my brothers in the DRC against those criminals from Rwanda and Uganda.

There is a terrible inevitability about the Wars rising up all over the continent.
Maybe for now but I wouldn't give up hope for its future. Different leaders may be able to form new alliances and lead their states to peace and prosperity. Perhaps just a naive dream but many continents endured many decades if not centuries of suffering until some kind of balance was found that was able to endure some amount of time in the current era without as much violence.
I agree with you but I fear that Africa faces a century of War at least until a Major regional power becomes strong enough to protect or deter other weaker neighbours. South Africa could be a major help but its infrastructure is crumbling and its political parties are a mess.

Yes, there is. It is true that tribalism can be strong. But despite this, there is a strong sense of Congoleseness, particularly in the capital (because almost all the ethnic groups are reprsenetd there) and the eastern provinces (because of they used to be craddle of Lumumbist/nationalist rebellions and first victims of Rwanda/Uganda/Burundi agression). There were strong Unitarian and nationalist movement from the time of independence.
Most people in DRC identify Congolese before identifying with their ethnic group. To give an exemple. There Kongo people in DRC and Angola and there Ngbandi people in DRC and CAR. If a ngbandi of DRC, a ngbandi of CAR, a kongo of DRC and a Kongo of Angola are all in the same place ( let's in Europe or in African country other than their), the ngbandi of DRC and the kongo of DRC will first identify as Congolese and connect (even if they never met before) than connecting with the member of the same tribe of the different country.
But because this sense of unity is also influenced by the common sufferings of the recent years and the feeling of being victimes of foreign forces due to the wealth of our country, the congolesenese of some is defined with a strong anti-rwandan (and sometimes anti-burundian ) tones. Thus, when many people of different tribes see themselves as Congolese, they don't include kinyarwanda or kirundi speaking tribes/communities who are seen as foreigners, diaspora of Rwanda and Burundi illegaly occupying DRC lands and agents of their influences.

Sounds to me like a tit-for-tat justification, accuse DRC of supporting Hutu rebel groups in Rwanda (Who knows? With the emnity there, maybe true) who we don't like so we support Tutsi rebel groups along with some opportunistic seizure of territory and natural resources along a porous and volotile border region. Seems as clear cut as any of hese post-colonial shitshows ever get. As usual ordinary citizens shiver in their homes while armed gangs rampage and flex their muscles.

Also it was somewhat a civil war as Congolese joined the fight against Mobutu. Mobutu's closest and only useful Ally during the first congo war was Sudan. Rwanda has only been able to play in Congo's eastern border because congo was destabilized by the conflicts.
I suggest you read up about the First and Second Congo Wars. Rwanda can and has shown it can punch above its weight with minimal consequences...

There's other tribes like azande, bakongo, lugbara etc that have this same history and nobody says anything to them but when its a Rwandan all of a sudden they are not congolese? The troubles in the eastern DRC show us that no good deed goes unpunished. The Rwandans who fled into the DRC should have been met at the border and sent back. Foreign colonisation being the reason is a common misconception. African biggest issue is internal instability, ethnic and religious divisions and hatreds they have among each other and unchecked population growth. For Africa to develop they need to solve their internal issues, the rest is just peanuts and will go away when the core issue is solved.
