    Oh yeah, I tried these a few years ago. It was fun. But definitely a parlor trick. I thought it would be good for when I needed to have a bitter herbal concoction but the tablets go bad too fast unless you know you're going to need to have something like that soon. It would probably only be worth it if you knew you needed to use it enough to go through the entire package next week or something..
    edit: a quick google says that they should last 2 years... Maybe I just got a bad package. wow. Also searching the item in my amazon history. Its been 10 years since i tried these. time flies.

    How it works: Miraculin is a taste modifier, a glycoprotein extracted from the fruit of Synsepalum dulcificum.[2] The berry, also known as the miracle fruit, was documented by explorer Chevalier des Marchais, who searched for many different fruits during a 1725 excursion to its native West Africa.
    Miraculin itself does not taste sweet. When taste buds are exposed to miraculin, the protein binds to the sweetness receptors. This causes normally sour-tasting acidic foods, such as citrus, to be perceived as sweet.[2][3] The effect can last for one or two hours.[4][5]

    These are utilized with people going through kemo and it reduces the metal taste they have.
    This is much better tasting if you have the plant itself which is very easy to grow. Back in the day there was a comparison of Miracle Berry vs Artificial sweeteners and well there was more money in the artificial sweeteners. Synsepalum dulcificum Is the botanical name. All my coworkers enjoy when I bring them into work but I’ve never tried the tablets only the actual berry off our trees.

  • @GordonSanders
    @GordonSanders Před měsícem +1

    Back in the 90's, I checked these out too. After researching it, I believe what happens is that a molecule from the Miracle Berry has two ends.. one end is shaped to receive a sweet flavor, while the other end can receive a sour flavor. On your tongue, the sour receptors are stopped up by the MB, and the sweet receptors are tricked into believing that the sour taste is sweet due to the binding of the MB. overall.. makes sour things sweet and has no effect on naturally sweet items

    Love your channel! I volunteer with the Death With Dignity program in Washington State. I bought some of these to have on hand when clients take the life-ending medication, which does NOT taste good. However they recently began using Simple Syrup (sugar water) to mix the meds so the Miracle Berries may or may not help in that situation.

    I remember when I was a kid there was this show that was focused on the science of food. It only had once season but they had an episode on miracle fruit where they made a whole menu that would only taste good if you had miracle fruit before hand. It was an awesome show. I wish I could watch it somewhere but I’m pretty sure it’s not available on anything.
    After a good 10 minutes (I wish I was joking but I just had to find it again) I finally found the name again. It was Future Foods and it aired back in 2010. I thought I’d found the show on Tubi and AppleTV but, while I’m pretty sure the front picture is one of the show hosts, the episode are NOT the show. I’m so confused 😢 I’ve always wanted to watch their miracle fruit and healthy fast food episodes again 😞

    These are marketed as a health aid. They are super fun to try at least once but not really sustainable financially, and they are pretty short lasting.
    I had the privilege of having a family member who grew the actual plant/ berry for fun. Growing it is the only way it would be affordable to do this often.
    Another strange thing is that your body can still sense the citric acid burn, but your tastebuds are blocked. I’m glad he mentioned it.

    I’d be curious to try these tablets. I have almost no sense of smell, so I get practically all of my experience of food from the flavor on my tongue. Since the miracle berry wouldn’t change the way something smells, it might make food taste quite a bit more different to me than it would in someone who can also smell the food. Maybe. Who knows?
    I like almost everything to there aren’t many foods I won’t eat. I can’t stand mushrooms, though - they taste like dirt to me - and I’m not a fan of asparagus or kale. Those would be interesting to experiment with. I LOVE a lot of bitter foods that many people hate, like Brussels sprouts, collard greens, turnip greens, and similar foods, but I’m curious how those flavors would change.
    But please don’t drink apple cider vinegar for health reasons. It won’t affect your health, positively or negatively. Ever "benefit" it’s claimed to have is misinformation and junk science. Use it to make your salad dressings taste good or make your meatloaf glaze better. It makes a great glaze for carrots when cooked down with a little brown sugar, too.

    It's useful in a few ways. People on a diet who is cutting out sugar can enjoy dessert which contains zero sugar. Same goes for diabetic people. Key lime pie? You can make 1 without any sugar, pop 1 tablet and enjoy the pie.
