I'm European but I have never tasted anything as amazingly delicious as Southern cooking. I'm in love with soul food, Cajun spices and all that sweet tea. You Southern people really know how to enjoy life and your food says all that for you.
the cutest comment ;_;
🗣 Thanks you sir 💯
That's because alot of us haven't forgot our roots .
We know up North too, not just the south
south asian food is also amazing
Once a year? Man I'm black and live in Georgia. Hell I use to take FC to school in my Smokey & Bandit lunch box.
blackericdenice 😂
blackericdenice I jus knew someone would comment on that lol but I dont think he knows black people to well😂
Javon Ramsay Guess he only watch The Cosby Show.
***** lol I guess so
blackericdenice I'm white and I eat fried chicken weekly. Because I'm from the south where everyone of every race eat fried chicken weekly. Blacks outside the south eat fried chicken weekly because their origins are from the south. Same for any whites or some other race outside the south that cook and eat fried chicken weekly, it's likely they have origins in the south. Down here in the south, we all cook and eat fried chicken weekly, because it's a southern food and southern tradition. It has nothing to do with race, but everything to do with southern origins.
I like to let my chicken sit on a cookie/baking rack for about 10-15 minutes before frying. It allows the coating to "set up' on the chicken. The chicken comes out more crispy. #yum
Looks yummy!!!!!
+Tiffany West Thanks for the tip. That sounds about right. I'll give that a try!
Prairie Falcon You'll never go back to the way you did it before. Enjoy!
+Tiffany West i agree, making it sit is the way to go
+james b lolol u tried it?
When I was in high school back inn 1966, I got a job at a local eatery that had KFC. It was the only place for miles around to buy fried chicken! After school, I'd go cut up the whole chickens, prep 'em and fry 'em! I'd cook as many as 30 pots a night. (2 chickens per pot) Back in those days, The COL. would visit all of his stores. He came in one night and watched me fry his chicken. I passed with flying colors!
I would have been nervous and messed up. Does he look like his picture on the sign?
Congrats! So now give us the secret recipe. Probably after all the 'secrets' are their MSG and other flavour enhancements anyway lol
The poor Colonel would be disgusted with what they have done to HIS wonderful fried chicken these days. I can't eat it anymore.
That is a WAY COOL story.
sjds51 damn you old af.
@2:37 if anyone only has fried chicken once a year, you ain't livin'.
More like a one a day max and once a week min
Dairius Grantling
Yup. And realistically we aren't talking about pork or beef which are far less healthy than chicken fried in vegetable, canola, or corn oil.
Exactly
rkgsd New evidence says canola oil, soybean oil corn oil all bad plus they are gmo oils hexane used to make them.Coconut oil or olive oil is the healthy oil even lard is healthier than canola or corn or soybean called vegetable oil folks don't let them fool you they fooled me for too many years.Coconut oil or olive oil or lard is safer
N.E.Arkansas Trash Trucks&Lottery Lard is safer? I'm pretty sure your doctor didn't tell you that. Check your arteries in about 25 years after continuous consumption of lard-cooked foods.
If you want them even crispier, after you pull them out of the butter milk and into the flour, try double dunking them back into the butter milk and into the flour one last time before frying them. Trust me, they turn out so much better !!
Will definitely try that!!! Sounds _so_ good ...
Been doing this for years.
It’s the only way to do it!
This recipe sucks dick
Miguel Garcia
You should know
@@MiguelGarcia-hr6bs you suck what?
When he said “once a year” i almost fell out of my chair.... LOL
🤣🤣 same here as I eat my fried chicken
It's great watching ancient videos from chef John. They show how much his talent has grown but also how much talent and class he began with.
Did he actually say that he cooked that chicken for 25 minutes? Holy overcooked Batman! Dark meat needs 13 minutes.
This video is so old but lmao "how often to you make fried chicken" SHIT ONCE A WEEK😂😂
Frying chicken is like my go to, idk what to cook meal lol
I make it twice a week lol
yeah, at least twice amonth
i guess that's why obesity is so common these days.......
+louise valiquette
No, a prevalence of refined sugars is why obesity is so common (with an assist from the fact that very few people actually "labor" for a living.) People were a lot leaner and healthier back in the days when nobody thought twice about deep-frying dinner.
Haha, not sure why I do this to myself. Here I am watching a delicious fried chicken video before I make myself a fulfilling salad...
Sinbreaker Well... i hope you stayed with the salad... im actually preparing this at 2 am cause it made me friggin hungry!
.
+Francezka Habilini The struggle is so real.
+Sinbreaker maybe you can make some oven fried at least it'll be a little healthier.
damn did he say he cooks fried chicken once a year? Wow. Down south its more like twice a week
This is my "go-to" recipe for fried chicken. It really can't get any better than this.
Ingredients:
3 1/2 pound chicken, cut in 8 pieces
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp cayenne
1/2 tsp white pepper
1 tsp ground dried herbs (oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage)
2 cups buttermilk
for the seasoned flour:
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp cayenne
1/2 tsp white pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
2 1/2 quarts peanut oil for frying
Thank u!!
Thanks man
Please stop hating on the wing tips. So delicious. Show the tips some love.
That's what I'm saying. That's like hating on the bits of corn left on the stick after eating a corndog. Love wing tips.
Lol. 100%
I was thinking the same thing! Wing tips is usually the first thing I attack when eating fried chicken.......
+Thomas Nanookify
Great for stews.
Julia Child called them nubbins.
My Grandma fried chicken in a cast iron skillet, then she used the fryings for gravy with mashed potatoes, biscuits. She also cooked up quail, pheasant and a lot of other meat with Gravy, potatoes, biscuits, she also used bacon grease, lard, real butter.Damn Good Eating.Probably not Healthy by today's standards. My Grandma could COOK,She actually taught my WIFE HOW TO COOK.My WIFE HAS CHANGED a lot of Grandmas recipes, for a more healthier option/KINDA OF THE SAME BUT NOT THE SAME/,but several times a year she will bring out Grandmas recipes,(GRANDMAS, OLD COOK BOOK,THE ORIGINAL VERSIONS) and COOK OLD SCHOOL ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND,USUALLY A SUNDAY DINNER/BIRTHDAY OR SOMETHING,YEA IT'S BAD FOR YOU, BUT IT TASTES SO DAMN GOOD.EVERY BODY GOES HOME FULL.
Made this the other day. Best fried chicken I've had in my life.
I can't remember the last time I had fried chicken. OMG.... I'm on a diet, why did I watch this?
LOL, I do the same thing. Every time I'm on a diet and I open up CZcams on my computer all the videos recommended are friggin cooking videos.
iLoveTurtlesHaha ikr i want kfc now 😂😂😃
Yes season first.. they were recommending the same for battered, fried fish before dipping in batter to make sure to bring out flavor BETTER...
iLoveTurtlesHaha you can’t eat chicken while on a diet? What do u normally eat just yogurt which is tasty it is but so is chicken 🍗 “My Grand Mother always said you can have ☝️ One you know it’s excuses they bug me As weird Al Vankioshi said in his song “Just Eat It”
iLoveTurtlesHaha iiiiiiiiii
Fried Chicken once a year? Yeah right. I fry it 2 or 3 times a month!
Got that right I make it like every other week!! Delicious!!!!
Heck Yeah!
Yeah buddy
i giggled when he said that lol i wonder if you can do the same thing to make chicken strips
Man once every month I gotta have me some fried chicken!
I made this last night and it turned out excellent! It was my first time ever making fried chicken. This recipe made it pretty easy to make. Thank you Chef John, for this recipe!
This fried chicken is 110% legit! Thank you for the recipe!
wing tips are definitely not useless.
true, i like munching on them later. the little crunchy bits are awesome
I like launching them at my neighbors using rubber bands while they play their mariachi music at 3am. :D
You can use them to mark your place in books.
I install them on my Cessna for extra fuel efficiency.
ask a chicken if they are useless!
"How often do you make fried chicken? Like...once a year?"
Me, a Southerner: *immediately looks around nervously, sweat starts to collect on my forehead, screen blurs*
January 13, 2022 - I LOVE seeing your older stuff. It's such a cool thing to see your progression. Chef John, thanks for what you do. You really make my day
Your channel is one of my favorites. I have been cooking for family and friends and everytime i get nothing but compliments. So thank you.
It was the best recipe ever! My husband fell in love all over again! Thank you. xoxo
"Once a year." Yeah, sure. Certainly not every couple of weeks... 😐
Gordon Ramsey says you can have this as a great every 3 weeks
@@loveoneanotherasihaveloved8327 eat what you want when you want
RIGHT!!!🤣🤣
Air fryer and you can make it every week
I am going to take a wild stab at this, are you from the southern US?
I have been watching your videos for years, and I just love your voice! Your recipes are amazing and you are so personable. Well done!
Wish this dish would be revisited sometime soon, this video was the first foodwishes I ever watched 8 yrs ago.
Only ONCE a year! Chef Jon that is Cray-Cray.
Yup I only eat fried chicken once a year
Lives in California.
“How often do you make fried chicken? Once a year?”
The Southerners are *quaking* .
you doncky🤪😡😡🦍
Watching this in 2019 a whole decade since this was first published. John your video quality has improved drastically over the last ten years! Also you come off with your tone of voice and personality much better these days in comparison to these early videos. Keep up the good work
I was looking for a great fried chicken recipe, so I made this recipe this morning and it was AMAZING!!! The flavor was incredible and the moistness of the chicken was incredible! Thank you Chef John!
Wtf?Once a YEAR? I'm black, we eat fried chicken every other WEEK 😂😂
i eat ot every month.
it*
Keyana Smith Because blacks came from the south. All southerners, white and black, eat fried chicken weekly. It's a southern dish. Chef John is not from the south, that's why.
Lmfaoooo I was about to say the same thing except I'm Filipino lol 😂
Infires, man YEAH Then you ain’t really black. I’m white as Casper and I could eat it every day.
To make buttermilk use 1 cup of milk......add 1 teaspoon of distilled white vinegar (or 2 cups 2 tsp). Wait 5 minutes and you have buttermilk.
I can't believe this video is 9 years old. Chef John , you've definitely stepped up your humor over the years. But you've always been my favorite CZcams chef!
Gonna try this as soon as I get my hands on a chicken and some buttermilk.
I knew if I wanted a great fried chicken recipe that if you had one it had to be great.
Buttermilk fried chicken, sweet potato corn bread, collard greens with smoked turkey, baked macaroni & cheese and watermelon lemonade! Thank me later!
You forgot pinto beans.😎
Fried chicken once a year?!! Baby where they do that at.! I live in Texas😕
#enoughsaid
LOL!!...I live in San Antonio...gonna break in my new Waring Pro deep fryer with this recipe tomorrow for Sunday chicken! :-)
This is Texas!! We do chicken once a week, NOT once a year. haha.
I'm with you I'm from Louisiana, fried chicken once a year LOL!!! #notdownsouthbaby
livelife_76
Yummmm...I've had Louisiana fried chicken before...loved it.
I made 8 pieces (4 drumsticks and 4 breasts) using this recipe. Damn..it was yummy!! Went to the local bbq place though, to buy a quart of mashed potatoes and green beans as sides. Whew...that good chicken sunk me into a food induced coma and I woke up late Monday morning.
A big THANK YOU to Food Wishes for the recipe.
At least you made the main dish...That's why they call it comfort food, because you get too relaxed after eating especially in your case LOL!!!
Yeah, here in London, once a year seems about right...Jesé..
Delicious.
Most of my friends and peers don't know how to cut a whole chicken but my grandparents taught me. They are southern
and buttermilk fried chicken was my grandmothers specialty:)
My southern mother taught me to fry chicken in an iron skillet, which by the way was the best I ever had. And her gravy .... yum. After seeing your video I’m rethinking the whole process. Frying chicken in one batch makes a lot of sense and less worry. So I’m going to give it a try. Thank you Chef John!
Hi Chef. Thank you uploading and sharing. I have a suggestion for you to try. To the flour and spices, add third of the amount dry Mash potato flakes ( preferably powder instead of flakes). It is insanely good. I like it double dipped in butter milk and flour and rested 10 minutes before deep frying.Yummoo
Lol I love listening to you talk.
You are THE VERY BEST CHEF EVER...
THANKS a MILLION

A lot of your dishes are just DREAMY!
chef
you are my savior
i've always wanted to learn how to cook
(my mom prevents me)
and this is easy to follow
the problems....
i'm a newbie
and i'm Malaysian, so i don't know how or where to get the exact ingredients
but you sir deserve a like, share, and subscribe.....
Jesus is your savior... Anyway do you have grocery stores in Malaysia or just markets?
I have to ask.. how does your mother prevent you from learning to cook???? That's just baffling.. almost as baffling as the guy who asked you about grocery stores in Malaysia... I don't think Jesus would appreciate ... .. pff. never mind... Christians are pretty good at misrepresenting their own Savior.. So anyway your mother. She wont let you cook???
idk
i asked my mother to teach me how to cook and teach me how to bake
but she just said
"why would you want to learn that? you're not a girl"
so i think my mom was afraid i would turn into a homosexual man
kiahahahahahahahaha
Aww. We mothers can worry to much about the unintended consequences of our actions. You must be from another culture than American. Or of a very old generation here in America. It is very common in America for men to be a chef. In fact i its safe to say that there are more men than women chefs. So what's up with the devil stuff? Are you trying to shock people for the pleasure of it? ; ) ))
fuckthegovernment He is malaysian who is most likely muslim, don't shove your beliefs down other people's throats and all he is doing is admiring chef John so don't be an ass
Comments going crazy over that once a year comment
I've made this recipe a few times since finding it a few years back. Always turns out great. Give it a try!

why do i always watch videos like this when im hungry??
I just started watching your videos thank you I'm a single guy and these recipes really help out you are my new favorite chef
You my man... Are a perfectionist! Great job at making one of the most basic things in the kitchen! Bravo!
Love the recipe and video. My chicken would be completely burned if left it in for that long. At a holding temp of about 310F, mine takes only about 10-15 minutes total. I got up to 165 F internal temp in the chicken. It was perfect! So, if it looks like yours is burning, consider removing earlier and check the internal temp to make sure it's done.
once a year!!! i got my laugh for the day lol
This video finally won me over. At first I was amused by the Jazzy Music that I knew from RedLetterMedia videos. Then I came back to amuse myself with his funny speech pattern in the later videos. Now I subscribed for the great recipes. Every time I look something up here he is. Well done Chef John.
11 years later. Watched this now its marinating in the fridge lol timeless
We never could afford chicken but squirrels, rabbit and groundhogs all hold the batter real well. You can also use baby catfish its like a drum stick. We catch a bunch at night loading grammas panty hose with hooks, moss, and worms. Use a big flash light to guide the catfish to the hook sack. You can also batter frogs and crayfish but they don't have much meet like the groundhogs.
Wow! Are you in West Virginia?
Groundhogs were not meant to be eaten.
Lol, my grandma loves the wing tips. I let my meat go over night and I use the mix of what ever bread crumbs I want to use and flour. In a black house hold fried chicken is like 3 times a month. lol At least at my parents it is. My father LOVES fried chicken. You know my grandma used to do it in her cast iron skillet. =)
You should have eaten some I love hearing the crunch.
You are a true inspiration. Fried chicken is my "desert island" food of choice. Thanks for sharing.
tried this recipe over the link he provided and it turned out sooo delicious. This recipe is promising. Thanks for uploading this one.I ve keeping this recipe in my book forever. My family loves it.If u guys have a problem with chicken not cooking in the inside..pls lower ur heat from the start till end.It will cook just nice.Love it

+MrOldclunker I have never made fried chicken! I just get some from popeye's when I have a taste for it!
+HUGH JAYNUS There is NOTHING like homemade fried chicken while it is still hot and crispy.
shekitten7456 I agree. I just don't like stining up the house with that fried oil smell
I'd be a sin if I did not share this amazing fried chicken recipe with y'all. Kudos to the guy who came up with it.
Nice demo. I thibk the key is the buttermilk soak, and seasoning the pieces directly, as well as puttin seasonings in the flour. The coating looks perfect after frying. Great texture. Thanks for the tips
gotta love the background music
Tis groovy and chill
I love this guy.
Thank you for sharing your recipie sir.
I´ve just make mine and it is sooooo moist! the best i´ve done so far.
i used fresh garlic, ginger and onion and salt paste, cayenne and white pepper, powder oregano, saffron and nutmeg in my seasoning. then put it in the butter milk (homemade) for 2 hours.
May God bless you
The fried chicken, taste so good when I eat with the Delta Parole music on blast the fried chicken is love fried chicken is life.
Makes me want to cook more often. Even when I don’t feel like it... Thanks! Not only does cooking at home tastes better, it’s usually the same price or cheaper and you get leftovers!
Cooking doesn't just feed you better, it also makes your life more enjoyable. Especially if you find a food you just love to make.
I made this a few weeks ago and brought to my nephews party. Everybody raved! They said it was the best thing Ive ever made!
What is the dried herbs you used? Please and thank you
yara schamanski I just used all the seasonings he said in the video...
@@iluomobravo yh but all 11 is on the website. but it doesn't work?

I like your recipe definitely going to try it in my house we have fried chicken maybe 2-3 times a month and now I've a good buttermilk recipe. I wasn't too sure on how long to let the chicken season before cooking it before and now I know TFS
I tried this today. Absolutely the best homemade fried chicken i have ever eaten my entire life!!
Love this recipe. How about this super easy spicy version?
EASY SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN with a SPICY TWIST. A quick and simple recipe with Karen.
Nom Nom Nom.
I'm white and was born and live in the north. I LOVE fried chicken. This is definitely not just black people food.
you have a black soul
black people and white people don't exist, only humans
They do exist, but the color of their skin is just that, a color; a label used to describe someone at first glance. Just like saying that an apple is red, green or yellow.
race does not exsit
There is debate about whether humans can be categorized in specific groups or races, defined by their physical appearance alone, that is true. But it's silly to ignore that people have different skin colors, and using that color to describe someone is not good or bad, is just the way they look.
That reminds me of Sunday lunches with my family. Thanks Chef!!! ❤️🌴🙏
GREAT, I've been looking for this recipe for long time. thank you.
I love it thanks
OMG. Its 11:00pm and now I want fried chicken.
I'd LOVE to see this updated!

Funny to hear you in your new videos, way more happy and with more animosity, not complaining, just saying.
I'm salivating right now. Going to buy a whole chicken and buttermilk to try this tomorrow! Looks DELISH!
Chef John, i absolutely love you! You are literally greater than any chef on food network! I seriously need to go to your house and eat with you and cook with you! You are too funny as well!! Great great job! 😃👍🙏
Cutting up the chicken was super hard this video makes it looks super easy
Hard? What did you use, a plastic knife? You should use a cleaver or a big French knife.
Need a sharp cleaver
Yea people whove been doing it for years make it look and sound easy. I learned that the hard way in cooking school. Chef john did a video where he easily de-boned a whole turkey without tearing it to shreds and it blew my mind.
He said fried chicken once a year? I eat fried chicken 4 days out the week 🤦🏽♀️
i hate to admit it, but as a youngster i loved next day KFC, cold fried chicken...after making Chef's Buttermilk fried chicken and then leaving some for the next day, I had some cold the next day, and oh man, delicious treat!!! This recipe, hot or nextdaycold, superb!!!
Justs made it this evening... fantastic! Thank you so much!
Fried Chicken? Once a year ? This dude is funny lol
Can you use the same pot of oil twice if you are making a doiuble batch?
+andrea raffol Yes, you can re-use oil quite a few times. You can even filter all the bits out of the oil and refrigerate it for later use :)
