Once I moved up from my Sony ZV-1 to the FX30, I bought the ECM-B10. My wife and I are full-time travelers and the small size of this Sony mic paired with the quality sold me.
I also use the voice isolation in FCP, which gives us great quality audio for our CZcams channel.
This is an excellent review of the Sony mics, but people should be warned that the ZV-1 doesn’t support the digital connection.

Would really like to see Sony come up with a hot shoe mic accessory that allows you to relocate their hotshoe mics to a coldshoe mount on cage or somewhere on top handle if you're rigged up.
Exactly my question.. if we dont have the Audio handle how would we attach it to the camera with Top handles attached? No way to do that?
If I'm not mistaken, it looks like the XLR-K3M comes with such a cable that goes into the camera hot shoe, and would allow to relocate the XLR setup.

Good hard work. However you forgot to test them by walking with it. Some Sony Mic make sounds or capture body finger movement. You also forgot to trst the Azden smx-30 which beat all these microphone. It is real mono with the shotgun mic directional and capable to remove side sound AND it is also stereo to record music with auto on/off, +20/0/-10, filter. It has also a absorber of shock so you can manipulate the camera without recording the sounds of the body. It is much more heavy though than these small Sony and Rode mic. But it is better quality to my opinion, and you need the stereo cable, it is not digital. It could be less practical on the gimbal.

Great comparison, thanks ! They all don't sound great to be honest, the B10 is still decent while the Bluetooth kit sounds just as poor as the transmission technology would suggest with its limited bandwidth. FOr the money, you can do a lot better, minus convenience of course.
I don't know about the preamps on higher end Sony cameras, but my A7IV sounds pretty average, my ZV-E10 worse. I don't own one anymore but Lumix tend to sound a lot better, there's no default high pass and the limiter can be entirely turned off. So Lumix for audiophiles, Sony for AFC and AI

Great vid. Is there the possibility to use the Sony ECM-B1M and Sony ECM-W2BT combined with the FX30?
Do yourselves a favour and go with Rode, these people know how to make microphones. ECM-B1M is an atrocity especially indoors and picks up noise from the auto focus system on my 35mm Sony GM lens. No auto focus noise is being picked up by the Rode Videomic NTG, I exchanged the B1M for this one. NTG is way more versatile, you can watch Curtis Judd’s review on it. Indoors, a mic mounted on top of the camera sounds bad, boom it over head.
Used my smaller Rode to record some audio on my computer the other day. Cable free is another word for cable devoid. Proprietary for the L
My Azden smx-30 is better than the Rode. And it works perfectly on top of the camera, or in a pole for cinema work. It is shotgun mono directional which can remove effectively side sound. With several angle. It is also Stereo for music with
+20/0/-10, filter, auto on/off, and battery with two cover, foam and wind fur for studio/outside.

i keep thinking about the XLR-K3M but its a little out of my budget how much better is the XLR-K3M vs just hooking Zoom H4n pro directly into the camera so i can still use my shotgun mic in my home studio?
awesome video as always. I own the B1M and I love it. Though, if that lav system had a usb c charging port, I honestly might have pounced on that first. Obviously, an adapter is an easy fix, but I’m all about that convienience. Hoping a v2 will come out with the usb c port 🤷♂️

Is the ECM -b1m compatible with the FX 30? I don't see it on the Sony website.
People complain about the ECM-W2BT being really hot and clipping. How did you manage that and make it sound better? Any tips that you can offer? I ordered one for the form factor being able to be away from the camera while still getting better audio.
I set the levels to -20db on the transmitter and then tweak the audio in camera
Are we not missing the cafe sounds rejection using ecm-b10? I watched the section twice just to see if maybe the title was wrong on those or if it was in fact skipped. Really wanted to see that vs the ecm-b1m since they are so similar.
me too! haha. I was leaning towards the ecm-b10, but then realized I never heard how it dealt with the "cafe noise".

That’s where I don’t choose that device with a top handle. You would have to get a different mic or record externally.

@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thanks for sharing. I used to use the glimmer glass but now I just use the texture pop in DaVinci Resolve. I find that I can get that analog softness by increasing fine details while decreasing the coarser detail sliders.
