CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Victor (Adam Beach) shows Thomas (Evan Adams) how to be a real Indian.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This dramatic feature was written, directed, and co-produced by Native Americans. Native American writer Sherman Alexie scripted this adaptation of his 1993 short story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Director Chris Eyre's previous short Someone Kept Saying Powwow is incorporated into the 88-minute feature. Developed at the Sundance Lab in 1995, the film was a winner of both the Audience Award and the Filmmakers' Trophy at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. In 1976, an infant survives a fire that kills his parents. In a flash forward to the present day, the infant has grown up to become the skinny, nerdy adult Thomas (Evan Adams). At Idaho's desolate Coeur d'Alene Indian reservation, the overeager youth is mostly ignored by others, including stoic athletic Victor Joseph (Adam Beach), even though it was Victor's father, alcoholic Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), who saved the infant Thomas' life in the fire. A drunken Arnold later abandoned his family, and Victor hasn't seen his father in a decade. When Victor learns of Arnold's death in Phoenix, Thomas offers to pay for the trip to Phoenix if he can accompany Victor. They make an odd couple since Victor is embarrassed by Thomas' geekiness. In Phoenix, they find that Arnold lived in a small trailer in the desert, and they meet Arnold's friend Suzy Song (Irene Bedard), who provides disturbing truths about Arnold that impact on Victor.

"Our tribe didn't hunt buffalo we were fisherman". Victor: you wanna look like you got back from killing a fish" haha love that part
Easily the best line in the movie, hands down.
Definitely my favourite xD
😂 I know, right?!!! ❤ this film!
Hey Muskies are no joke.
I found it to be a tragic and depressing line. Because it shows just how Hollywood's portrayal of natives has even manipulated native's understanding of themselves and their ancestors.
Fun fact, Evan Adams (Thomas) is a medical doctor. He was also appointed as the first-ever Aboriginal Health Physician Advisor for the province of British Columbia
He makes us proud!
Damn, good for him! That's awesome!
And they never forgot their roots because occasionally they visit different res' too. Adam Beach came to the Powwow in Vancouver one year. Evan Adams just visits. Theyre not even of the same res thats how cool they are.
My mom told me that, My family is all Native
Native All-Star!
Thomas is so...............................
Pure.................................
"but our tribe never hunted buffalo we we're fishermen." omg gets me everytime. xD
Thomas is a everyday Indian, loves our history, we were born on stories, Victor is the very picture of a generation that lost there history. Because people place and things people in the past place that took away history of him and things that keep reminding him of it.. but yet still love this movie because they bring humor to it like our people
Victor the realist portrayal of a native nowadays
Thomas one of those natives going on ideas and stories about our people, not really living in reality
PROOFREAD.
It's WORTH it.
@@hah6988 Victor has STUDIED History, while Tomas attended Public School, which teaches that the ONLY Victim in WORLD HISTORY is the African-American.
@@operationpaperclip3952 yes, please proofread your CZcams comments. They need to look like scholastic articles
I'm surprised no one has made a tshirt yet that says "get stoic" and has one of their faces on it, lol. That'd be a great tshirt honestly.
Yes!!
“And he ate 15 fried bread” that would be me 😂
It was cool haha
I thought he said 50 lol
Damn, Victor needs to chill and let Thomas do his own thing.
Ikr
True but not culturally appropriate (or likely).
I know, Im totally a Victor smh 🙈
Victor was in so much pain bc his father was in pain n took it out on him. So victor always had a chip on his shoulder.
Also, why is Victor letting white perceptions of him dictate how he sees himself? Thomas doesn't.
“We were fishermen” every southwestern tribe 😂
Hopi fisherman???
I love the sarcasm in this movie. So good
Fun fact actor and Dr Evan Adams (Thomas) was 31 or 32 when he filmed this he looks way younger
He looks 19
Natives tend to Age Extremely Well and look younger
@@christinasavannah7992 yes we do.
I like how Thomas was a kind and moral man.
“But our tribe never hunted buffalo, we were fishermen” 💀💀😂
Loved this film. I first saw it in high school and it has been on my mind after all of these years. Trouble is, I am really bad with names in general. I am glad I found this scene and have the name to the film now. Absolute classic.
same. has never left my mind after i saw it.
Same and I finally just now remembered the freaking name so I could look it up.
Adam Beach is so cold and yet so graceful.
I think its funny that Victor gets on to Thomas for trying to sound like a medicine man from Dances with Wolves, but then goes on to get him to look like another stereotype
You gotta free it! ::flips hair::
His glasses look so current. I don't remember those glasses from that time! They look like the graduated fade hipster style that was big around 2012-2014. ;)
those glasses are cute aren't they?
Time traveler!!!! XD
He doesn't really wear glasses though!
My grandmother had those glasses. Trust me, they're not "current". Hipsters just took it.
Those glasses weren’t cool back in the 90’s. Glasses in general weren’t considered cool but nerdy. And nerdy was considered the opposite of cool. Most trendy people back then who wore glasses opted for thin rectangular and elliptical frames or frameless and rimless ones.
Hey, Victor....
Yo whats up
Where’s yer dad
An Indian man ain't nothing without his hair!!!
+DeCymbr Frank You're so beautiful.
thank you haha
thank you haha
thank you haha
DeCymbr Frank You're welcome :) Are you Native too?
at @02:01 when he says 'you gotta get rid of that suit Thomas whilst wearing a very similar shirt lololol
"Our tribe never hunted buffalo we were fishermen." 💀
This is a really good movie.
ɷ I Haveeee Watched Thisss Movieeee Leakeddd Versionn Hereeee : - t.co/e6QlTccFx6
he said buffalo?but our people were fisherman!lol
I remember reading the book "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" back in the 90s. (Back when I used to read like crazy, several books at a time.. I recall the other two I was juggling where Anne Rice novels). Anyway, I loved it and ended up with a crush on Sherman Alexie based solo on his author photo and his writings.
What a blessing to be born a Native American. They are the most wonderful and amazing people. May God bless them always. Wish I were born Native American myself what a blessing that would be.
Heres a medal buddy
Uhhh, ok?
Its ok sometimes 😂
Unless y were born in the 1800's LOL
WINTER STORM Just be you man you can’t just live wishing you were someone else. Pigments don’t matter.
Haha dances with salmon we natives have a good sense of humor
I know
Weird, I NEVER seen this on ANY cable movie channel. I forgotten how funny it is.
Were the writers native?
@@bubblegum2996 yes, all the production crew
I love this film! I think the bus scene when they start to 'chant' is a hoot!
Dances with salmon? I would have been like "screw you b**ch I love salmon". I actually do love salmon-it's good (especially smoked salmon)

I love this movie so much also a lot of people don't know that I am Native so that make sense why I love this movie so much
But Thomas showed us no matter what. Always keep strong.
XD
It cracked me up when my husband asked me what "ennit" means. Lmao
Skoden
I love this show, it makes me smile
Oh my god you have seen it that many times. I love that line
There should be t shirts with natives that say "Get Stoic" 👍
I love this movie. we watched it in 9th grade Spanish class. Such a classic.
You watched it in Spanish class? That's so random!
@@hellencarpenter4730 haha, yes. We had a substitute that day, and you know that pretty much means we do nothing the entire class period or watch a movie. We ended up watching this, and that's how I came to know this awesome movie.
i think i knew someone who saw the movie

"He ate 15 pieces of fry bread. It was cool"
I saw this movie years ago. It was pretty good. I've always wanted to see another by the same director, but haven't yet.
+Nex Tyrannis You might also like Dance Me Outside. Equally good movie.

This movie was just brought up at lunch and we were all quoting shit from the movie
All my friends are native and were from Arizona 😂👍👌

"An Indian man ain't nothing without his hair"
Me with my pathetic 6 inch long hair
1:07 my normal face is like that too and people all the time ask me if I'm mad😂😂
The Karankawa, a tribe that lived on the Texas coast, were fisherman and known for being over 6ft tall and fierce warriors.
Lol, Now you know he was just plain wrong for making poor Thomas feel bad. Lol
And Thomas has a really nice full on honest smile.

Leave Thmoas alone he's beautiful the way he is LET MINORITY MEN BE HAPPY!
I can't believe I'm saying this but to me, Victor kinda reminds me of Jay (Jay and Silent Bob)
Pain.. lots of pain.
The Yin and The Yang. Brothers😂

I feel like Victor & Tomas are from Spirit Bay Ontario . Victor’s dad from Spirit Bay
You lucky bastards, I wish I was part indian!!!!!!! 😢
I've always envied pure blooded natives. I'm half native. Still in tuned with my culture, but i wish i had the hair.
My son is over a quarter and has got that great hair
