My dog literally gave me a scar big enough for stitches and my first concern in the ER “was are they gonna put him down?!!!” , my dog is not agressive and I was putting my full weight on him when I was a bit younger, it was literally my bad, He’s still here to this day And I love him so much. When dogs lash out it’s usually always the kids fault, it was in my case and it was in this case, the kid grabbed his ear extremely hard and took his food so the dogs patience ran out and he lashed out. The fact they put him down when they could have done ANYTHING else infuriates me to no end
100% agree with you. We have a mixed pit bull and bless her heart she has so much patience with my son but I make sure to let my son know be gentle with her because not only dogs but anyone can lose their patience with a kid.
I've adopted 2 "problem" dogs from families that couldn't give them the attention and training they needed, and I have 0 regrets. You're absolutely right! It's just as much the owner's responsibility to train the dog not to react aggressively as it is for the parents to teach their children to be gentle with animals and other kids. It can be really difficult to deal with, especially in my case rescuing an aggressive traumatized dog, but with patience and love both my dogs are now only aggressive in how friendly and loving they are! I'm so glad your family had the patience and love to keep your dog, and understand he didn't mean it! I hope your family and pup continue to love and bring joy to each other for many years to come because you deserve it!

My 95lb 10 year old German Shepherd nipped at my kids face. She was fine. I didn't think about putting my dog down. I just monitored things more closely and he lived the rest of his life without another incident.

This is one of the best H3 Podcast Episodes of all time
As someone who had to put their terminally ill dog down last year I can easily say that I personally had an absolutely devastating time. My point being even with my dog being terminally ill it was still so incredibly difficult to do. The only thing that made me push through with it was the fact that my dog stopped eating for a full day and a half. She was rejecting even water in the end. I had to physically carry her in that day because she stopped walking. Even though just days earlier she was running around the yard being a goofball. This absolutely breaks my heart. I don’t want to believe that anyone could simply put their dog down just because they don’t want to deal with whatever it is. They’re more family to me than most of my blood relatives.
