    clouds are great for beginners! a wonderful way to practice painting the world through shapes and get rid of assumptions of what we think objects "should" look like and more seeing them as chunks interacting with light, as they are!

      you're right about keeping the value range quite narrow, i underestimated the beauty of subtle shifts

    Great video! I really like how you explain the different layers of the painting using mineral spirits and/ or medium. I was confused about the blocking in , but this really helped 😀

    PLEASE sell these paintings online!!!! I've seen some past videos where you showed us boxes filled with beautiful paintings that are just sitting in your studio. I'm a college student so I don't have much money, but if I did I would buy tons of your work online

    Hi Michael, thanks for all your demos! I'm a painter and a Patreon supporter. I encourage my fellow followers to consider pledging too. If more people who appreciate what you're doing and are subscribing would join me, then many little pledges would amount to a whole lot! I also want to say that I really enjoyed the real time aspect of this demo. I love that you can talk about your process while doing it - great teaching and painting!

    Beautiful work Mike, I found with a subject like this a dramatic sky with cad orange or yellow ochre just a touch will make this scene dance 🎨🙂👍

    This is beautiful. I love the real time again. What brand of linseed oil do you use? I’ve not tried this medium.

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Kim! The medium is: one part Gamsol, one part Gamblin stand oil, two parts Gamblin linseed oil. Any brands will work as long as they're artist grade. 😊

    I like your videos Michael, but I sometimes I wish you could explain why you change the some of the composition elements in your paintings. Here as I see there almost no visible separation between the sky and the clouds, this is not how it looks on your reference photo (and I like more how it looks on the photo). I also would love to hear why you even pick up the particular scene to paint... here at least for me there is almost no focal point and I'm not should what inspired you to paint it. Anyway, thank you for the video.

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  Před 4 lety +1

      As I mentioned in the video, the photo artificially exaggerates color and contrast and I was going for a more subtle look. The choices I make compositionally make sense to me, other artists will make different choices. 😊

    Your voice sounds a little rough Mike, I guess you catched a cold in front of the ocean. Very nice video btw. I approach the sky with a different concept which is weird because I tend to paint everything dark to light, but the sky is always the first thing I do almost finished before starting the rest of the painting and I first put on the blues, then the whites or lighter colours, and then I put on the darks, and the final retouches are the lights again.

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes, I was losing my voice from singing too much! I was singing some Cheap Trick. 😂 I think starting with the sky can be a good. I should do it more often.
