Great advice/demo on the varying drying times of different pigments on the pallet.
I never thought -
1) to really notice the differences beyond thinking, "Oh, that one's dry."
2) to tell students about it, and so
3) I've watched people squeeze a LOT of paint out onto the pallet.
So, thanks!
I think this is one of my favourite paintings. The colours in the rocks! Beautiful.
Another cracking painting Michael. Sharing your talent is much appreciated by many.
Thanks Mark!
Thank you for posting this. Having recently discovered the world of plein air painting I am learning so much from your videos.
Great video! You made me laugh with your ‘lean operation’ comment - I hear ya, not easy to try to capture the scene, enjoy the process, take video, and comment on what you are doing! Thanks for doing it and sharing!
Thank you for showing us more behind the scenes! Especially the cloud segment, I'm personally working on that. That piece is one of my favorites so far, excellent work!
Thanks Laurel!
Love your simple approach to gear… just the basics.
Hey Michael. So laughing at your battle with the elements ! A daily Scottish plein air experience for me (although we've just had 3-in-a row blue sky days).
Clouds and sky colours fascinate me too, only plein air can teach the true values I.m.o !
A Cloud A Day by Gavin Pretor-Pinney worth a read, enlightening studies of clouds.
Power To The Brush my friend 👍
A.
Ps, just ordered some Chamberlain Coffee & Merch this morning 🤣
Thanks Alan! Battling the elements is part of the plein air adventure! I'll check out the book you mention. I love painting clouds. Hope you enjoy your coffee! I need to order more. I'm out of Early Bird 😂👍
I didn't know that it was even possible to paint in this way like, just seeing it, drawing it, then filling it in, it's CRAZY! Another great video, my guy
Thanks!
That's a lovely painting Michael! .........Good idea to leave out the purples.
Thanks Paul!
Great! Helpful narrative during the process, too!
You paint, you film, you talk and teach all at the same time...thanks for the commitment and the inspiration
Thanks Martin!
Love the composition! I did a 9x12 color study of it, really liked it. Now I am doing a larger 14 x 18' painting. Your videos has improved my paintings, changing taste in paintings and my subject from landscapes to seascapes.
Another lovey painting Michael. Clouds are great, as is the composition.👍 You did well to find a Cove protected from the wind.
Thanks Oliver!
Great lesson in good composition! Excellent demonstration in less-than-perfect conditions. Thank you.
i love your videos and i also miss your daughter Emma so much! hope she's feeling okay ❤
Thanks Keti. Emma's doing very well 😊
Really love listening to the ocean while you paint, always look forward to your weekly video. Clouds & water, my favorite things to paint too. Thank you.
😊
Another gorgeous painting. Both subtle and lively tones in the water, and airy clouds. I’ve heard prolonged hiccups are a sign of creative genius - it all makes sense now.
Good call on the hiccups. 😁
Thanks Maura! Haha, you're too kind. Emma said "you ate too fast, king" and then laughed at me.
@@SuzWhat 😂✌️🙏💛
Another beaut! Your compositions and diagonals are always spot on.
Thanks Will!
A brutal day…hear the artist’s cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Seeks a more protected milieu
With clouds, cliffs and rocks too
Close up views - keeps a lean operation
Sky shifts from ultra marine to cerulean
Clouds of blue or maybe gray
No crew - he’s not Beyoncé
Apologies to Van Morrison

This was beautiful even at the sketch in. Really amazing. The reflected sky and the delicate value shifts are magical. I will be sorry to see the OG flannel go, but glad you are warmer. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
Thanks Suz! Haha, Queen B. I am not. No entourage and not nearly as glamorous. You never know, the old flannel may make an appearance here and there. Especially if I've got a big, messy painting to do. 😊✌️💛
@@chamberlainpaintings idk lol that fashion show you did awhile back with the new striped T-shirt and Chuck Taylor's haha! That one made me laugh memorably! I feel you, my style often gets me looked at like "a not-so-classy working class wierdo" haha! Or maybe that's just in my head. Idk tho, depends on where u go. College campus, Starbucks, the mall, restaurants..people look at me different when I got my "roughing it" clothes on
@@DCweldingAndArt I can relate. I guess it's all part of the art life!
Beautiful painting Michael!!! Love it! and your new flannel jacket looks lke it’ll keep you warm.. 😊
Thanks Sophie! I’m wearing the new flannel at the moment and I’m feeling very cozy indeed. 😊👍
Brilliant colors, brilliant painting and narrative! It cracked me up when you referenced the "lean operation". Thank you for sharing your talent so graciously.
Thanks Judy! 😊🙏
I’m watching all the ads. 🎥 🍿
You're very kind Suz. Have you seen the Larry David ad for crypto?
@@chamberlainpaintings hysterical. “I got 10 forks right here”. Pretty good. Pretttty, pretttty pretttty good. 😁
@@SuzWhat It's hilarious 😂 I actually looked it up on CZcams and watched it a few times. Beautifully filmed as well!
Fantastic! Wonderful job!
Thanks Bob!
Thankyou, always good to see you work

I think painting black is one of the biggest challenges I come across. Your solution of using Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna creates a great result for those dark areas in a brightly lit scene. I have taken to using Ultramarine and Burnt Umber. It creates quite a true black, but I can vary the temperature of it depending on how much of each i use, and surprisingly it remains quite colourful in the context of my compositions. It's a beautiful piece, Michael. I am really drawn to the distant mountains, and I agree with the challenge of keeping the clouds airy. It's a real puzzler sometimes. I've had more than my share of frustration with them. But when you get it right, it's magnificent! Thanks for the video.
Thanks Matthew! I have a tube of burnt umber somewhere, I'll have to try the mix you mention.
The end result is sublime !
Thanks Auguste!
What a perfect spot and a great painting.
Thanks Anne!
I like how the painting turned out really good!
We've had crazy winds here in Wisconsin all winter too. Hiccups but the show must go on. LOL That's why I love your videos because you're a down to earth guy.
Keep having fun with your art!
Take Care
Thanks Greg! The hiccups lasted almost two hours. Crazy 😂
Super, Super all around. Grazie!!!!! Yes, stay warm! Fran NM
Thanks Fran!
Great job as usual!
Thanks Bud!
i love seeing the pairings come to life! what starts off as an orange canvas with lines all over turns slowly into a beautiful painting with so much detail
Woah, new jackets!
I have a old jacket, and yes, it isn't even warm anymore. But I'd use it at the gym… like a sweat jacket.
Haha yes! I’ll still use the old one occasionally
Another great video, thanks again from bonnie Scotland
It was great to see and hear how you handle clouds. Those subtle value shifts are always a challenge for me. Another great painting, thanks!
Thanks Miriam!
@@chamberlainpaintings you're welcome!
Great video, learning so much from these! Thank you for taking the time to educate us.
Another great painting. Thank you for continuing to share your teaching wisdom.
Thanks Brian!
Love to watch you build your composition and explain your color and belie considerations your painting are wonderful
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful painting, I love the red in the cliffs!!
Thanks Cedric!
The composition--oh my! The background, mid ground, foreground approach really made it all work. With such a grey color-less day (at least to my eye from the video anyway), you really scored! Beautiful painting Michael.
Thanks Michelle! I definitely pushed the color. The color that was there was very subtle. That's one of the advantages of capturing a scene in paint as opposed to photo. You can exaggerate to recreate the lived experience!
Another lovely painting Michael. “Clouds scudding across the sky”. You’re my new CZcams painting star🥰. But don’t know how you manage to paint so brilliantly, hold the camera, comment and teach all at once. And often in the wind. Respect to you. And thank you. From south of France. 😊
Thanks Nicky! I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos 😊 I'd love to paint in the south of France someday!
Once again, a great lesson in values...appreciated the intro regarding your paint box! Interesting! Many thanks!
Thanks Charles! Glad you enjoyed the paint box bit. I wondered if I should cut it and get straight to the painting 😂
Beautiful color harmony M.C.
Thanks Joann!
Love this!
Beautiful painting! I was very interested in the way you painted the sky as I’ve just painted some fishing boats and the sky was similar. I struggled with it a bit so this video was very helpful. You mastered it very well. Thank you for posting
Thanks! Glad you found this helpful! I think keeping values light and the shifts very subtle is the way to go when painting skies.
Good one Michael!
Thanks Roger!
This looks great, Michael!
Thanks Karen!
Beautiful painting! I didn't know you could walk down to that beach. Van Gogh sketched with French ultra and left his sketch showing. You reminded me of him this morning. Stay warm!
Thanks Mary Kay! I didn't know that about Van Gogh.
great painting again young man..a new favourite for me..
Thanks John! Glad you like 😊
Gorgeous how you film and paint at the same time!!! I learn so much from these videos! Thank you!
Thanks Birgit!
Colors and composition ON POINT on this one Mike 👏 👍 well done! Just LOVE the cerulean, cloud covered sky! Your composition is always ligit but this one was especially pleasing
Thanks Derrick!
When you said sometimes the clouds painted look too purple, same thing here...I got a tube of Paynes grey ...helps me to keep the grey areas more consistent... I'm always amazed how you paint the subtle value shifts in the rocks
Thanks Nancy! Good idea 😊👍
Clouds frustrate me. I appreciate your take on this. Wonderful composition. I love this piece.
Thanks Heather! They used to frustrate me too. We don't get clouds very often so I don't paint them as much as I'd like to!
You are really inspiring me to start painting
😊
Wonderful paint great explains 🙏✨✨
Thanks Carmen!
Lovely
Great masterpiece, sir! I like it. I also like the ocean sounds! Btw. "Be an Outsider" ... Well, I feel like one all my life! lol ... Good luck with the show!
Thanks Olda!
@@chamberlainpaintings Cheers!
I have been transported to your beach! Really appreciate your videos and shared painting thought process. Thanks Michael.
Wish I could share my view at present, we are suffering through the dregs of winter it is really ugly here.🙁
Thanks Joyce. I hope you get warmer weather soon!
Your painting Pidgeon Point in the Terrain show is my favourite, liquid light in the water, colours caught in the sea, I would buy it if I could.
"liquid light", I love that. Thanks, glad you like!
Stay warm Michael, ( gotta check out your paintings in the studio ) 🙂
Thanks Mark!
😁
beautiful! ❤️
Thanks!
Gorgeous!!

Great and wonderful vídeo!
Congratulations!
Es muy bonita la marina, tiene mucho estilo, me gusta mucho, un saludo desde España
¡Muchas gracias!
Bravo!
Thanks Alec!
Спасибо, прекрасное видео! Толстовка теплая, не мерзните. Увидимся.
Very good painting! I like this one especially. I also like those rocks poking out of the water... Pigeon Point?
Thanks Alvin! Yes, Pigeon Point. Have you been?
@@chamberlainpaintings I havent been there but I recall a few videos of you being there and those rock formations are amazing. I drove by in 2019 not knowing anything about the coast. I hope to drive by again in a few years and make all these stops! I missed so much.
@@alvinray9080 There's so much to see and discover on the drive from Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz. I'm still discovering and I've driven that stretch of highway 1 for forty years!
Great sky study Mike, i had just done a seascape to find when i got home my clouds were very purple! So, this realy helped me thanks mate.
One question, your go to blend for greys, what are they?
Thanks Bert! My "go to" blend for gray is ultramarine with a touch of burnt sienna. I lighten it up with titanium white and then decide what sort of adjustments are needed.
Hi
Hello
Have you tried filming an area where interests you ....then take footage play on big screen in studio and paint....good idea when the elements outside are difficult for the painter....for multiple reasons...
Also, while filming- take close ups of the area of intrest....plein air painting in studio....
1:51 a good example of why filming the overall area of intrest for a painting and taking it back to studio playing it on screen ....having close ups of intrest...elements and such...
Not moving camera all around- having it focused on the one area for like 30 mins ...or however...
Again- here you have plein air painting in your studio....without the elements....
At 0:40 do you cover your paints in the box?
I know covering the paints with clear plastic making sure no airflow can get in while stagnant keeps paints fresh...don't dry up...thanks for your time....my box is same concept as yours....the paints last...again with careful covering not letting any airflow to paints...
Hi 😊
Hello 😊
how long did it take you to actually paint this?
About 2.5 hours
A fat-over-lean operation
Yes!
