Great atmosphere Love the vibrancy of those big trees so simple yet very powerful.
Beautiful! I'd love to be there when that student looks you up, LOL! she missed out
Really love this one and your approach to painting large tree masses , thank you
Hi Michael, I enjoyed pausing on all the show pieces at the end and taking a closer look. Thanks again for sharing your process, I always enjoy watching, even if I don't comment!
Thanks Lesley!
inspiring, one of my favorite locations in the world.
also, great quote: "as long as you keep the value of those shapes intact, it almost doesn't matter what you do within those shapes"
that relates to other art forms as well, e.g. music
Excellent composition! Looking forward to warmer spring weather here to get back out painting plein air. Cheers -Greg
Thanks Greg! Hope it warms up soon!
Thank you Michael.
nice spot !
ha "sky holes" i always seem to struggle w fore/near ground trees looking "pasted on"🌳. Thanks for the tip
Yes!
I love it so much, your videos are so comforting
that painting is my screensaver!
Concerning using pre-gessoed canvases, I have found it helpful to lightly sand the surface, apply a coat of gesso, and then lightly sand again. I do trust Blick products, but find the canvas to be easier to use when I give it this treatment. I started doing this after watching another CZcams video several years ago (wish I could remember the artist’s name!) and following his advice. Doing the extra coat of gesso and lightly sanding makes the canvas just feel less likely to fight with my brush.
As I mentioned I’m the video, this canvas was actually very nice to paint on. I’ve applied another coat of gesso to inexpensive panels and found it made the surface much nicer to paint on
Love the real-time full sketch process. The time factor added some reality to your process. Helps with the "big picture". Great vid!
Thanks Squatch!
thanks sir
Wonderful!
Thanks Bob!
I’m such a fan. Your work is stunning. And, I love how kind and generous you are to the folks who talk to you while you’re painting.
☺️🙏
I coole watch this youtube channel for days!! 🙈🦦❤️
With a focus on big shapes - the magic begins
There were plants and birds and -rocks- ducks and things
Squinting for big shapes then specific; dark to light
Steps back to make sure he keeps the values right
Joining Patreon is the benefit- creativity expands
(Maybe) I’ll give up the booze and the one night stands
😂
This is a very cool video to watch. I liked hearing the interaction with the passers-by along with your detailed process. You have so much going on when you paint! Recording, talking, explaining…Whew. I’m glad the canvas works better for you. The painting is beautiful. The soft reflections are so amazing. Thanks for the look at the show too. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
Thanks Suz! Yes, ducks! I need to paint more ducks. Glad you enjoyed. I love interacting with people. Especially kids. 😊✌️💛
Watching you paint makes my day!
😊
“Abstract!”
Really, Really, Really enjoyed this one and the helpful tips from studio.
🤗
So glad you found this helpful!
I like it.
Still takes me 4 weeks to finish a painting compared to your few hours .
But four years ago I wasn’t painting either!
Thanks for the continuing inspiration!
As long as you're enjoying the process! So glad you're finding my videos inspiring 😊
Very informative
Thank you!
Concentration on looseness and values...makes for a great painting every time! Thanks again for a wonderful video!
Thanks Charles!
amazing!!
Thanks Anastasia!
Such useful advice, I so need help with the steps toward a final painting. The colour choices and mixing were also really helpful.
BIG SHAPES is my new mantra!
Yes, BIG SHAPES! I'll see if I can include more on the final steps 😊
What you did in the video was really helpful, thank you
Great video. Great painting. It’s all about shapes, values, and composition.
Thanks Andrew!
I use the Blick canvases. I sand them lightly before using--knocks off the roughness. Beautiful painting. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Gail. Yes, a light sanding with my canvas bag usually does the trick! 😂👍
Good Morning Michael, the fiery reflections , of your brush, as carving reality, the tree a collecting of sentinels, beautiful painting 🙂
Loved the trip to the studio show , thank you for going there 😊
Thanks Mark! Yes, the solar reflection from the ferrule was particularly strong in this video. 😂👍
Realy enjoyed the focus on large shapes Mike, the lesson on value shifts was good too, thanks mate.
Thanks Bert!
Gorgeous painting. Looked excellent at 15' after blocking in. Terrific show at Studio Gallery.
Thanks Christian!
An interesting thing about reflections in water. Things like sky holes don't correspond exactly to what you are seeing through the trees. Because of perspective they sometimes take on a different shape or lie in a different spot from where you think they should be. That is to say, while it is a reflection, it's not a mirror image. Beautiful piece Michael. Amazing just how colourful a predominantly green painting can be.
Thanks Matthew! I often have to fix the sky holes or reflections later to get them to line up better. I noticed that it this painting. I like to work quickly so there are often details that get overlooked in the heat of the process. Yes, lots of green out there! Glad you like.
LOVE IT! Tree paintings are my favorite, and one of the hardest subjects for me to paint. Please do more.
I love painting trees as well. I agree, they're so challenging. More to come!
Lately I've been using gouache, small formats. You make me want to dig into my oil stuff and big brushes and 'go crazy'! Super painting!!!!!!! grazie NM Fran
Thanks! Go crazy Fran! It's more fun 😂
Looks beautiful Michael. ‘It’s abstract’. That was funny.
Thanks Tim! 😂
This turned out really great!
Thanks Chris!
@@chamberlainpaintings I am for sure coming out there to paint this spring or summer. When I do I’ll let you know.
@@paintcoach I don't plan to travel until October so I'll be around. Do you plan to do some plein air? I just found you on IG.DM me and we'll go paint!
@@chamberlainpaintings plein air painting is all I’m planning to do when I’m out there haha
@@paintcoach Good plan!
Good morning Michael - always inspirational and informative - what a beautiful place to capture the ‘light’.
Good morning Lesley! Thanks! Stow lake is one of my favorite places to paint in SF.
Great shape on your cypress trees!!! and a strong composition.!
Thanks!
Beautiful! You always inspire me. Thanks!
Great work as always Michael. Thanks for the great tips they are very helpful.
Gorgeous. I’m both inspired and humbled.
Thanks Maura!
Another very nice one. The whole park and arboretum is just such a beautiful and creative place.
Thanks David! I plan to explore more of GG Park. Lots of beautiful cypress trees!
So beautiful! Your videos are so calming and inspiring !
Thanks!
So well done! I love your deliberate approach and not overworking it.
Thanks Susanne!
love ur work so much also the vibes of your video are so calming~
Thanks Hilary!
wow this is so cool !!!
Thanks Paresh! 😊
love to see the interactions you get when painting outside, makes it real!! thanks, love all your videos, cheers from Brasil!
😊🙏
I gesso those fresh canvases three or four times sanding between each coat to get the surface better prior to toning.
To my surprise this canvas was really nice to paint on. I'm not sure why I had trouble with them in the past. Maybe I was using smaller brushes or something. Anyway, I know a lot of people who doctor up their store bought canvases. You've gotta have a surface that works for you!
(finished painting view), “”See the Ancient “” , just right of center mid ground, standing , dressed in a long grey cloak, full length , yet open , black attire underneath, he looks towards you Michael. There , with tree boughs above, and just behind the bushed edge towards the water, heralding the gathering of the “” Sentinels of the Tree “” ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Yes, there is an ancient energy out there. Thanks for your observations Mark!
❤️

✨✨✨
Brilliant painting, sir! I really like it. Very nice reflections! Beautiful. Btw. People were so excited about your painting too in the video! I mean these kids and then some ladies. She didn't recognized you're Emma's dad ... lol ... but I do remember you met, in some of your previous videos, couple of ladies who actually recognized you and took some pictures with you! ... Awesome show as well! Have a great day!
Thanks Olda! Hmm... they may have known I was Emma's dad 😂
@@chamberlainpaintings That's cool! Cheers!
( replay time ; )
great vid dad
Thanks Ava 😊
❤️
😊
Love the folks talking to you. I hear lots of painters mention how they want the darks and shadows to be transparent and am curious why that's so. Is it to help the toning color affect the finished work or to help give it some 3D effect with depth?
Keeping the darks transparent helps create depth and keeps them luminous.
Good morning Michael! 😊
Good morning Mark!
@@chamberlainpaintings 😅 Michael, my name isn't mark but thank you for wishing me good morning though 😊 you can call me adi 😂😊🎉🤙
@@umchileanywaysso Oops! Sorry Adi! Good morning! The first comment is usually a good morning from Mark Parkey. I didn't even look at who posted the comment lol.
Good Morning Michael 🤣
@@markparkey1218 Good morning! 😂
Great to see a new video..thank you.
How often do you refer to your viewfinder when you are sketching in your initial composition?
I only use the viewfinder when looking around for a composition. Once I've got the compositional idea in my head I'm done with the viewfinder. I don't use it while sketching.
Great one again, Michael. I like the 20x20 too and great outro. Any particular reason why you're using the canvas vs hardboard panels, or just mixing it up a bit? Thank you.
Thanks Alvin! I have boxes of canvases which I bought years ago. I need to clear some room in the studio. They're mostly larger sizes. They're not bad to paint on at all actually!
hey michael! really nice painting, i love all your art. i have a question, what do you do with the edges of the canvas, do you paint them?
Thanks Mia! I paint then with black acrylic paint.
im curious to know whether or not those people came back to see? hahahah
They did! 😂👍
Is there something else I can use to tone other than minerales spirits? Something non toxic that gives the same effect?
You could pre tone with acrylic paint. Lots of painters do that. You can start painting over it with oils as soon as it's dry. Artist grade mineral spirits like Gamsol is considered safe to use. Especially outdoors. Check the Gamblin website for some valuable safety info.
I want to thank you for your videos. I've a question, but which is opposite of your comment on looseness. What if you want to tighten up and try and focus more on realism and stay expressionistic, but push towards realism more. My colors are enjoyable, but a bit more saturated towards expressionism. Thank you.
The process is the same. If you want more detail, you just take the process further. Start with big shapes and keep refining until you have a level of detail you're happy with. As for color, find the most saturated color in the scene you're painting. Mix the color as accurately as possible and then judge and mix the surrounding colors using the most saturated as a "key". Hope that helps!
I just bought an expensive cotton canvas-24"x24", acrylic primed- from our local art store...it is very rough and I don't know why!! It eats up my oil paint..wondering if I might sand it a bit??
I'd sand it lightly and give it another coat of gesso if it's too absorbent. I've done that with inexpensive canvas panels and it made them much nicer to paint on. Good luck!
@@chamberlainpaintings thank you..I spent a lot of money on it and was surprised it was sooo rough.
Insane in the membrane?
always
U look really cold
CZcams ads becoming as bad as TV
But you learn things for free on CZcams and TV just steals your time and rots your brain 😂
