Nearly a decade ago the Guardians of the Galaxy were introduced to the world and helped turn Chris Pratt into a global phenomenon. People instantly fell in love with Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord as well as Gamora, Drax, Rocket and of course Groot. Although we all know and love these Marvel characters now, can you imagine how weird it must have been to actually pitch the first movie? A talking tree that just says his own name? A foul-mouthed gun-toting raccoon? Step inside the pitch meeting that led to Marvel’s galactic heroes and helped set up Avengers Infinity War!
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to Guardians of the Galaxy! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

I have no idea why it's so satisfying that Ryan uses the same stack of papers for all the pitch meetings. But it is.
It makes me unreasonably happy
@@frankgrajeda3566 Same. I had to comment just to say that I got a surge of joy at that question being answered, and hearing what the answer was.
Superstitions are tight!!!
Thats obviously a joke...you know that...dont you? Tell me you know
@@Marquis-Sade no u
"Sometimes they're not too far of from actual studio notes that were given" had me cracking up.
The voice cracking on the "worrisome" bit afterward had me howling.
Yeah, I would really love to know more about that. Which notes specifically? lmao
That part was both hillarious and depressing in equal measure.
I don’t get the joke
Which is.... worrisome 😂
That stick figure reference was the nostalgia I never knew I needed. Thank you Ryan.
he did his job; he made you remember the thing you just remembered
Yeah, I'd love to know more...
It's fun to think that I might have watched videos made by Ryan when I was in school, as I watched a whole bunch of early stickman flash videos whenever we were in a lesson with computers. 😂
Unexpected but not unwelcome
Ryan should do a pitch meeting for the "revisited pitch meeting" series. Can you imagine the lines
"So this pitch meeting guy is gonna revisit his old pitch meetings"
"Haven't we already done that?"
"Oh yeah woops"
"Woopsie"
I'm only poking fun, i actually love seeing ryan out of character too. It'd be cool to see though
I would love to see this come into reality. Hope Ryan sees this
I might re-review this comment myself.
HECK. YES.
Pitching pitch meetings that have already been pitched is TIGHT!!!
then he can revisit that pitch meeting
"I try not to make mistakes, but sometimes I do."
Wow, words to live by
Making mistakes and admitting them is tight
@@MelindaGreen AND it's super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Wow wow wow... wow
No quitting tho lol!
I live by the full quote "I try not to make mistakes, but sometimes I do. And at the end of the day it's unacceptable."
huge props to ryan for owning up to his mistake and quitting youtube. noble stuff
😂😂😂
idk if he really quit, I saw someone on youtube who looked just like him.
But of course that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
I love love love how it's Simu fangirling and Ryan looking like the slightly creeped out celebrity and not the other way around.
💯💯💯 😂 so good
what
It's a real treat seeing how Ryan continues to improve his sketches.
I mean, we all knew the studio exec _feels_ right but the fact that actual screenwriters actually confirmed that the studio notes often come frighteningly close to these sketches... wow, wow, wow. Wow.
WikiHow to tell a CZcams commenter you remember seeing them on multiple videos like ten years ago and even though you don't even remember which ones or what they said seeing them again is making CZcams feel like a warm little neighborhood
Hearing that the writers only contribute 5% of the final product makes me sad
the worst part is... they apparently don't even get paid much these days. i hope the WGA strike works out for them.
There is a funny older book called "a Martian wouldn't say that"it is mostly a collection of notes from shows in like the 70s and 80s but has a lot of really funny/terrifying studio notes that are terrible I hindsight if you happen to hunt it down.
@@alveolate word. I think in general the underappreciation of screenwriters starts by not paying them enough but it also shows in how little thought is spent in projects that border a billion dollars and have extremely poor writing. Take Amazon's The Lord of the Rings show. I refuse to believe that you couldn't have saved that project by _starting_ with good writing and have everything else follow from that. And I refuse to believe that you couldn't get strong writing if you were willing to throw a couple million dollars at the problem and show some basic respect to the writers.
Props to stack of paper. It never fails to give a good showing. Best cohost ever
It’s funny because I have seen practically every pitch meeting ever and these revisited ones still feel fresh. Love it. Keep ‘‘em coming
Yes
I love that Ryan pointed out how The Matrix originally had humans' minds as the CPU. I didn't know that before and it explained everything. It just goes to show that the writers really do tend to have most of their scripts changed by the studios.
Yesterday I was watching corporate compliance training videos (not a Hollywood or media company). They said "Super easy, barely an inconvenience." My jaw dropped. You're definitely seeping into the bottom depths of our culture 😂
Unexpected CZcamsr references in corporate videos are TIGHT!
haha that's funny because I was actually just scrolling a website and it said that and I was like, "that's the thing they say in the video!"
@@tiana_andherbooks Yes, Sir, it is! 😁
Seeping into the bottom depth of our culture is TIGHT
Every time I watch a pitch meeting, I'm always like, "yeah, this is funny and all, but are there any stains on those papers?" Thank you for finally answering the question I know everyone was asking!
Inb4 "Pitch Meeting: Prequel" where we get a 2 hour story of how Screenwriter Guy got his stack of papers. Then "Pitch Meeting: Prequeler" where we find out how the stack of papers got the stain.
You know it’s great when you can just rewatch again and again, Pitch Meeting is exactly that, every time funny.
Supporting up and coming actors is so nice of you! Great to see you helping out Simu Liu 😊
Learning that some of the pitch meetings aren't far off from what actually happened is especially funny to me.
There's really no one better than Vin Diesel to voice weirdly endearing animated creatures that can't really talk
when vin voices an animated character the movie is bound to be good
Alan Tudyk has entered the chat.
Finding out that Vin Diesel voices the Iron Giant was probably the biggest plot twist in my life
@@Cabamacadaf What I wouldn't give to replace the intruder Nolan North in Halo 3: ODST with Vin Diesel. Like, Sean Maher would fit best, but if we gotta have someone out of place in the Firefly Halo AU fanfiction game, I'd rather have Vin than Nolan.
@@whenfunnydancingcockroach4625 I knew but was shocked on how good he was. It kinda made him lol to get fast and furious.
Even when he's out of character and criticising Marvel for getting too quippy, Ryan does it in such a gentle way.
Also, the delivery of that one word "worrysome" is sensational.
After the pitch meeting where Ryan gives his analysis of the movie and how it changed the way Marvel makes their movies, I thought that was a very accurate analysis that put words to how I've felt about Marvel movies for a long time.
Guardians of the Galaxy 1 is one of the best movies in the MCU but yeah it changed the trajectory of the franchise. I wish the other movies kept the same tone and Guardians also kept its humore tone. It would feel more special and the other movies would hold more weight.
Having a way to control gravity in individual sections might come in handy sometimes - like to stop a riot. But the guards should have like magnetic boots or something, so they can never be thusly incapacitated.
Or you could just raise the gravity and immobilize everybody
They aren't really controlling gravity. It's a prison in space, and they are just disabling the fake gravity, so that they can then use the floating turrets to "pilot" the control tower to the hangar, to get to the Milano. The guards should still totally have magnetic boots.
@@WHTJunior "The guards should still totally have magnetic boots."
Agreed. But I think I can answer that one. The answer why the guards don't is: budget cuts.
You see, the Nova Corps used to run that prison, but then it was privatized. Y'know how it goes. And the sub-contractor for the magnetic boots pocketed the money and ran, and the boots never got delivered.
(I'm joking, but still...)
Has there ever been a movie or TV show you wanted to make a pitch meeting for, but it was either too obscure or too well made for a pitch meeting?
Edit: Thanks for the responses, I was wondering why he didn’t do one for How to train your Dragon.
I remember him mentioning how he wanted to make a pitch meeting for how to train your dragon but had too little to nitpick that he gave up. (I might remember wrong tho)
@@MysticCat21 wouldn't be surprised. Movie is essentially flawless
he mentioned once in an interview that he tried to write one for How to Train Your Dragon, but the movie followed its own rules well enough that he couldn't find the material. Edit: sorry someone already said this.
I think he may have mentioned How to Train Your Dragon was too hard to write one for.
People already mentioned this, whoopsie.
🤔 IIRC he started one on how to train your dragon but there wasn’t enough material to warrant a pitch meeting episode
I never seen that movie but making this comment was *super easy, barely an inconvenience*
I love the end part where we just get to see more of Ryan just explaining stuff and stories. It’s very interesting to listen ro
GotG 3 was incredible. Can't wait for the Pitch Meeting next week!
Even after multiple viewings... STILL absolutely HILARIOUS 😂😂😂
These Revisited videos were such a great idea, keep them coming! :)
Given that we're doing multiverses now, that shouldn't be a problem
I really liked watching the stick figure death matches.
So good for you to have pointed out yhere are multiple kingdoms of nerdoms.
Still would love some old-timey pitch meetings from decades past, even into the black & white or pre-talkies eras.
Watching them again always feel like a new pitch meeting

Oh my God the stick death videos! You just unlocked memories in my head that had LONG been forgotten hahaha those videos were hysterical.
I loved the ones called Xiaoxiao. I hadn't discovered a lot of animation at that point so it felt like the best animation I'd ever seen.
@@ArchibaldClumpy yes!! Those were the best!!
The nostalgia burns! Me and my college friends huddling around a computer cracking up at animated stickmen - what a sight. Those fights were crazy
I've found my people 😂
@@ArchibaldClumpy Xiaoxiao!!! That guy was a maniac. More enjoyable fight choreography than a lot of anime films. Amazing
People from the biz confirming that Ryan's portrayal of the studio-creator relationship is realistic, is tight!
That paper reveal was honestly a really cool piece of trivia!
Pitch meetings is easily one of the best shows here on YT I ever had the pleasure to watch.
Yep, pretty sure I've watched them all, some of them several times.
My wife usually doesn't like to watch the silly videos I happen to find on CZcams. But, yours is the exception. After watching her first Pitch Meeting, she would ask... "Is there another one." After an hour, she was hooked. We both love them. Now, when we watch new movies, either at home or at the theater, I will say... "You got a movie for me?" And she's responds, "Oh, boy!"
Keep up the good work. I know it's hours of work to put a 2-3 minute video together, no less a 5-10 minute video. Between Pitch Meeting and Honest Trailers, what more is needed after watching a movie?
Well, the movie itself for one
Revisiting old but relevant videos is tight.
Keep up the good work, man. ^^
Im loving these revisited episodes learning about things behind the scenes is something i always find fascinating
I loved those stick figure martial arts animations! I had almost forgotten about them.
Super cool questions/answers! Really like this revisiting concept :D
Hi Ryan, two possible questions for the next one of these:
Which recurring bits in pitch meeting or other series are your favorites?
How do you decide if a sketch is going to become a series?
Thanks for years of great laughs!
The best thing about your Pitch Meeting videos is that your pointing out the tone deaf and insane producer interventions that happen. Sometimes they save a bad script but I honestly think most of the, are ruining good ones. So your efforts are absolutely cathartic in that regard.
Dude, your stick death reference gave me more nostalgia than a hundred Disney remakes
When the first movie was made, no one thought it was gonna be hit. That's why James Gunn had more creative freedom.
Not even Gunn himself thought it was gonna be a hit. So he made the movie as if it was his last one.
It's weird how movies people think will fail but are pure passion projects end up becoming masterpieces. Like Star Wars, for instance.
@@wasbear to be fair StarWars did fail.....the test audience
The first screening was really bad recieved and then they re edited everything cut more stuff away, and thus we got the masterpiece
@@THEJPIndustry I mean, the first thing you learn when you get into Star Wars is that every version of Star Wars prior to release day sucked in some form or another 😂
@@Shalalacls Clearly the lesson to learn there is that you probably shouldn't give Lucas full creative freedom on one of these Star Wars movies. Hopefully no one will ever be dumb enough to do that.
@@Dilandau3000 I'd rather see Lucas' version of that last movie than....what we got.
Ryan, thanks for the consistently amazing comedy. I recently re-watched an episode of Viva La Dirt League's DnD series (Episode 2 or 3), where Greg gave a "Super easy, barely an inconvenience" shout out. What's it like for you when you see other creators do homages to your work?
Also a VLDL fan! I remember that one; very enjoyable reference!
Hey dude,
It was nice to hear you talk about your videos and the ideas behind things. Can't wait to see your GotG3 video once it comes out.
You've given me soooo many laughs over the years. Just want to say thanks for bringing smiles to our faces. It's definitely easy and barely an inconvenience. :)
Thanks man. Keep it up. :)
Not gonna lie, when I saw the first one of these videos I though "meh I don't think that's a great idea", but now I'm almost as hooked onto them as with the Pitch Meeting ones, so I hope you keep them coming! Oh, and I loved to know about the stack of papers. Keep them, one day, those might be worth a lot of money!
We need an origin story for that paper stack. How it ended up here, what twists of life it went through, and finally, who left the food on it
But what is its _motivation_ ?
@@MelindaGreen Agreed. Someone call Spielberg?
Hey Ryan, any plans to do more 80s and 90s films? Your pitches for "classic" movies are the best, because they make you question how so many plot-hole-ridden stories are considered timeless!
Thanks Ryan!
The revisited editions are lots of fun!
Thank you Ryan! I love your Pitch meetings and your other videos. I hope you keep up your work! I can't stop watching the funny stuff you do!
BTW, I have the same frame of the bridge in a haze in my kitchen! Sweden store represent! :D
Never stop doing what you do, you give us all so much pleasure, way better than watching the movies.
I'm watching these pitch meeting as a recap to catch-up on the first two guardians of the galaxy before watching the third. Also this video is so full of heart and I'm very happy to learn more about your pitch meeting process.
PS: Trash Panda drawing was so cute ❤
Don't bother with the third movie.
@@MAGAMAN why not? I just watched it. Movie is actually good .
Keep up the awesome work man!!! I love your analysis of the movies in these rewatches. Would love to see you do a pitch on The Core!
Stayed for the talk at the end. Loved hearing a little about your process. Keep up the good work! I find myself saying "Super easy. Barely an inconvenience." to my friends often.
There are legitimately some movies that I get more anticipation of watching the pitch meeting than watching the movie itself.
I've asked a couple times, would you ever consider doing pitch meetings for popular video games? Board games? Tabletop or CCG? I'd love the Ryan George take on, say, Diablo, or Zelda, or WoW.
"So, you have a board game for me?"
"Yes sir, I do. It's called Monopoly and it's all about trying to get as much money as possible."
"Oh, that sounds fun!"
"It is!
...
for the first five minutes."
Your pitch meetings are awesome man. I myself don't have any patience to watch a movie thoroughly once. But, you continuously have to watch movies or shows you might not be interested in. Not only that, but you have to observe every minute detail and make notes and whatnot. I'm sure it's taxing, but it shows how much passion you have for your job. Thanks once again for putting smiles on our faces...
Very interesting. Every time you look back on old videos, I appreciate the product more.
Great watch 🤙🏽
Am I the only one who is emotionally invested in the things Ryan draws now? 😂 he’s Pavlov’d me!
😂😂😂
Longing, rusted, furnace, daybreak, seventeen, benign, nine, homecoming, one, freight car
This should be a list of everything Ryan has drawn in order of appearance but that's to much effort so just pretend it is
Very refreshing seeing your thought's on pitch meeting and getting your insight on movies as a whole. Like most, been a fan of pitch meeting for a long time and always look forward to see your videos. Thanks Ryan.
i love these sessions at the end!
Thanks for giving us some behind the scenes insight I've watched your videos for years now and you never stop being fresh which is incredibly hard to do, so thank you for all the laughs, and would you do any more of your alien learning earth ways videos cos those were hilarious.
We live in a society where Marvel being able to make movies about literally anything and people would pay money to see it is just a distant memory.
It's always nice to see these revisited videos. I was curious, what movie was the hardest to write a pitch meeting for?
I feel like I heard him answer this question in one of the recent revisit videos 🤔 can't remember which though. I know he was saying he had given up on one cus he just couldn't do it, but then went back.
So I have very fond memories of watching those stick fighter videos on newgrounds in my school days! Your work is amazing and always fun to watch, really just a joy. But now that I know you made those as well, you are kind of a legend.
OH MY GOSH RYAN RESPONDED TO ME!!! Thanks man, I’ve been watching your videos for years! That’s really cool that you met Simu to film that video, he seems like a really cool guy
I always forget where I know you from, so thank you for reminding me in the introduction every time.
Absolutely love these. I thought I’d seen all the Pitch Meetings but these reviews of older material are mostly new to me. The original sketches are hilarious of course and the commentary afterwards really adds so much depth and also enthusiasm to the analysis. So much work goes in to each of these sketches and it’s always been obvious that the mock cynicism of the scriptwriter and the producer are underpinned by a huge amount of research and a real love of movies. Everything about these reviews of old Pitch Meetings is … well … Tight.
You make some of the best content on CZcams, Ryan. Never change.
I really like that you add something to these...the drawings might be my favorite part. I can't ever think of questions so it's fun to hear what others come up with. Thanks Ryan!
U r gorgeous
Isn't "trash panda" an ACTUAL (evil) nickname for a racoon?
Hilarious!😂
Peter legit called Rocket a trash panda in GotG Vol 2😂😂😂
Hey Ryan! A bunch of nice words and then: why do you barely do any animated movies pitch meetings? I would really like to see more of those.
This is going to picked for the answer and questions section.
I imagine it's not unrelated to the fact that a decent chunk of animated movies are comedies
Ryan, I had a bad day at work, It didn't matter. I put on your channel and I'm laughing in 3 minutes. And keep in mind this is re watching these pitch meetings. You are the man.

Getting my comment up within the first 20: Very rare, and barely an inconvenience.
Also: Your trash panda drawing made me happy.
I discovered the stick death website when I was at school and used to watch it all the time with my friends, I had no idea it was you. Having been a fan of your videos for so long, this is an amazing discovery for me!
LOVE the behind the scenes tag at the end. Hope every pitch video moving forward has them 😂
I love your pitch meetings and the revisited ones too! Keep the comedy coming!
God I love these videos so much. The other day I thought about it for a second and was like, "Hey, he's kind of just remonetizing his older content by having us rewatch it." and honestly I don't even care about that because the stuff you add before and after the Pitch Meeting is so damn captivating. I've seen every Pitch Meeting, most of them many many many many times and I still watch the entire thing during these reflections because I want it to be as fresh as it can be when you start talking about it.
Oh, and I guess I should ask a question. Uuuhhm, have you ever thought about adding more permanent characters to the pitch meeting itself, like how sometimes there's an assistant or another producer guy being called, but like a permanent assistant character or whatever?
I feel so much connected to Ryan now that I know we both spent many years of our youth making animated stick figure videos on Macromedia Flash
Since you’ve changed up the rate of pitch meetings have you noticed any changes that you personally have seen in the quality of the pitch meetings?
Thank you for all of your content. Please keep going. You make people happy

Ryan,
First off, thank you for all of your videos. They always brighten my day!
Second, is there a kind of movie, or a franchise that you look forward to making pitch meetings for?
Third, have you ever considered doing pitch meetings for video games? Every time I play through Batman: Arkham Knight, I just imagine how many pitch meeting style jokes you could make about it.

I cannot believe it has been almost 10 years ago.... GotG was the first Marvel movie and it got me into the MCU. I was so enthralled with the 'infinity stones' and went and watched all the previous ones to piece it together. Winter Soldier, Civil War are my favs, along with Infinity War and GotG
Wow! Someone with the same experience as me! I was looking for this comment, and you posted it *while* I was reading the comments. I watched Guardians of the Galaxy, loved it so much right away. Found out about the Infinity Stones and how the story would inevitably all come together, so I went back and watched every MCU movie to catch up on the story while eagerly anticipating Infinity War, and I've been a huge Marvel fan ever since, all thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy! I'm really enjoying these Revisited videos! It's cool to hear your thoughts about both the movie and how you approached the Pitch Meeting for it.
Hi Ryan! Love the videos
I have a very important question that I think everyone has been dying to know the answer to:
Is the Pitch Meetings universe the same as the universe where all the videos on your other channel happen? For example, could Screenwriter Guy ever meet up with Weird Pervert Guy?
This is a weird guy to have on this project, for sure
Your amazing I love your work !!! Keep it up
This last bit is so good. Glad you got to meet him!
Honestly, I’m always impressed with your drawings in these videos. Are you also an artist? Do you practice ahead of time?
