- Deepak Chopra, a very well-known New Age teacher of mysticism debates Christian apologist Greg Koukl on Lee Strobel's show "Faith under Fire." This interaction was mentioned in the forward to Greg's book, "Tactics."
Though this aired in 2005, I think it's still one of the best examples of how to effectively deliver facts while calling out inconsistencies in your opponent's position. Notice how Dr. Chopra begins stating information with certainty, only to default to "uncertainty" at the end, a very popular (and wildly inconsistent) position many New Agers hold. Many progressive Christians have a similar view, interestingly.
What's startling is that Deepak Chopra has written several books about "Jesus" and he's not able to take Greg's challenges and corrections head-on. I think this is an excellent resource for students, too, to show logical fallacies. I added subtitles and a little "flair" to this video version.

As an ex-new age practitioner, I used to follow Deepak Chopra (along with many other "gurus"). He teaches experience and looking inward for answers. I praise God that He rescued me from this deception. (Edited to add: I'm surprised my comment elicited so many responses. As a born-again Christian with several decades of practicing and teaching new age beliefs myself, I can attest to the deep deception of self-centered theology).
Especially if he gets his "facts" from Newsweek.

I thank God for his mercy and patience as he steered me back toward Him. 🙏🏻.After of practicing and teaching new age beliefs for many years, I can attest to the deep deception of ALL new age teachings. The New age is so sneaky - looking back I am shocked at how easily I got sucked in. Strength and salvation comes when you read the Bible.

This is the first time I’ve actually heard Deepak Chopra speak, and I must say I was surprised at how simplistic and similar to amateur atheist CZcamsrs his arguments were.
Conversely, I was very impressed with Greg Koukl and his ability to counter Deepak’s objections in a spontaneous, convincing manner and without hesitation. This was severe ownage by Dr. Koukl.
He certainly was unable to keep up with the litany of assertions that Koukl made. Chopra couldn't hope to keep up with that "onslaught".

This is what we need more of in modern apologetics: answering the concerns about life brought by other religions and showing that Christianity is true when compared to them. It's not only Atheists whose claims need to be addressed.
I would recommend David Woods channel for that style of apologetics, he most often addresses Islam. I rather enjoy watching such debates even though I'm an atheist myself.

@@gabepettinicchio7454 I think we can be somewhat charitable to Greg Koukl here and realize that the point he is arguing with Deepak Chopra is not specific sources in support of Christianity, which I have no doubt he could produce if that was the way the debate went. But rather about having even a fundamentally rational conception of reality rather than "believing your own truth." I mean for one thing Chopra has clearly never read even secular history about the early church if he still believes that Christianity as an institution was created by Emperor Constantine at the Council of Nicaea or that somehow the King James Version is some sort of iteration rather than a translation.
If we must complain about anything it is that Chopra gets platformed like this, because of his millions of booksales and followers, when anyone debating him must first build up this ground floor of rationality in order to expose what a quagmire of sinking sand it really is. The issue though is that this irrational belief in there being no such thing as objective truth has become a prevailing worldview the world over.
Plus all those other religions such as Muslims are not sure they are going to heaven. They may be devoted to their religion but they don’t know if they are going to heaven, ask any of them- any religion that is not in Christ. The biblical Christ who died in the cross for our sins, who was resurrected. God came to us.

I've never seen this guy, Greg Koukl... but I have to say that was one of the biggest intellectual beatdowns I have ever seen in my life! To make Deepak look like a little child is no easy feat. Bravo.

I encourage people to have heated face to face or even moderated discussions like this. Being a keyboard warrior is not the way we need to have these talks with folks and know what we are talking about. With all his "learning" which is really just him practicing and "conceptualizing" himself, Deepak worships Deepak. Good stuff.
Hopefully Deepak will come to the truth of God's word and accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
Some of us aren't good at apologetics. I'm just gonna say what I believe and why. I am reborn from Catholic faith. I find it hard to confront ppl. I don't agree to get along, but I don't go around seeking ppl to evangelize either.
I wouldn't reduce the outreach that is practiced by text, to the title of "keyboard warrior". That term normally has a negative connotation, and who's to say it isn't helpful or that doing both isn't possible?
@@arcguardian I’d say it has its place, but the culture from Christians needs to change. There are far too many heated arguments filled with slander for the smallest of infractions. People can benefit from thought-out comments if they’re looking for more information, but seeing a Christian talk in a condescending manner toward someone else only encourages their unbelief.
Though a good debate is great fun or an overall positive experience for some, there are others that a heated face-to-face talk is the epitome of Hell on Earth. I, myself, love debating with those I know are safe and willing to talk it out. However, debating is a skill that not everyone has or is comfortable with. Don't misunderstand, because there are plenty of those who use the anonymity of the internet for nefarious and very misplaced purposes, but I believe having the time to tweak an answer, the articulation that typing can provide, and the inability for someone to just stomp the end of your sentence or thought into the ground, makes a wonderful mode of communication. Especially for those who are meek, or are respectful enough to sound meek, or have speech or other communication issues! (Like me, I don't hear that great and I tend to stutter if the stakes get too high or if I'm super excited about the topic). "Keyboard warriors" just seems a bit like a put-down to those who don't like the face-to-face debate. God bless!

Greg Koukl is an absolutely brilliant apologist. Deepak may have had the look of confusion on his face but I think it's more of a heart issue, not an intellectual one.

When Chopra said “I’m comfortable in my uncertainty.” He lost all credibility with me. It sounds like to me that he has knowledge of the truth, but like the rich young ruler doesn’t want to give up everything to follow Christ.

Well, his son made a documentary about Deepak, his dad. He too, thinks he’s a fraud.
I was a new ager who was deep into occult spirituality (for ~30 years) and though I was able to get into a relaxed state - I never achieved peace or freedom. That only came when I discovered and acknowledged Jesus and God. ✝️
Same. 30 years of never ending searching which amounted to nothing. Compared to Jesus, in one day the search is ended...life miraculously changed 180 degrees and there's no going back.

It all just fell away and it wasn't even me trying to stop. Also He gives you a freedom from a life of sin. You are no longer in bondage to it like you were before. It's all the work of the Holy Spirit that comes as a helper and sustains you in your walk. And it feels Amazing. Unlike anything else. Everyone's story is different. Mine was kind of extreme. These freedoms are not of our own doing , they are a gift from God.

It was this very video, 5 years ago, that made me pursue apologetics at HBU. I was lost in New age darkness as well. And Greg's unwavering faith and solid belief in Christ made me say "I want what this man has."

You cannot out psychologize the Bible for God not to throw you into hell for all eternity. In other words, you cannot come up with a good enough excuse here and now, so you will not be able to on judgment day. If you say you did not want to be born, God is going to say you should’ve been born again, that means become a Christian so that’s not gonna work. And there are no other excuses try to think of one. So now you know for the first time in your life, that the Bible is smarter than you and it is a steel trap, smarter than all of mankind! So at least investigate and look to see that these things are true, because right now you just learned the Bible is smarter than you, so what should you do concerning the Bible?
Prophecy, the Bible is 27% prophecy, that’s future history written in advance. God‘s really sticking his neck out to get it cut off he’s wrong but he hasn’t been wrong about the thousands of prophecies that were fulfilled, so he’ll be right about the end of the world prophecies as well and you’ll have no excuse on judgment day for not looking for truth!
Caveat: you cannot look for God in times of chaos says Isaiah 45:19, so you better do it now. In other words,You’ll be too worried about your own survival when chaos hits, than your eternal destiny!

Sometimes telling the truth is not enough. If people are shouting & frothing at the mouth & abusing others while telling the truth, the truth can seem unappealing.
So perhaps delivery is crucial too. Perhaps, at best, the truth & delivery are in sync.

It's a tradition in my Syrian Orthodox Church to study and learn from all religions around us so we can live in harmony together by better understanding them and have a well delivered response when anyone tries to challenge our faith or convert us.

Did anyone catch the Holy Spirit moving on Chopra when Kokal first laid out the firsthand accounts and more accuracy of the history of the gospels and translations? I could see it! There was a moment where you could see that pure innocence of honestly not knowing and how that could make a difference in his worldview. He makes a ridiculous, half-baked statement then, when he's pulled up on where he's wrong, tries to take the discussion down different rabbit holes. There are many Christians who would preach that followers of Islam or Buddhism are hell bound because they don’t except Christ as their “personal Lord and savior.”
That’s pretty awesome how this man is able to defend the Bible and his belief so well. I think for me i always knew there was something more to life than just the accumulation of things and experiences. Eventually the Lord reached me in a way where i started seeking the Truth very hard and came to the realisation that God wanted a personal relationship with me. That there was nothing i could do or give the God who created all things. That’s why it makes so much sense to me that God would send His one and only Son The Lord Jesus Christ as payment for my transgressions. He loves us so much He gave us the payment for the transgression that we’ve commited. I’m thankful that He sought me because without Him i would be nothing. Praise the Lord Jesus Christ!

For anyone else interested in this topic, Sir William Mitchell Ramsay was an archeologist that tried to disprove the bible using the book of Acts as a guide for dig sites. Needless to say he ended up becoming a Christian after making archeological discoveries using the bible. God is so detailed.

In other words, you cannot come up with a good enough excuse here and now, so you will not be able to on judgment day. If you say you did not want to be born, God is going to say you should’ve been born again, that means become a Christian so that’s not gonna work. And there are no other excuses try to think of one. So now you know for the first time in your life, that the Bible is smarter than you and it is a steel trap, smarter than all of mankind! So at least investigate and look to see that these things are true, because right now you just learned the Bible is smarter than you, so what should you do concerning the Bible?

Anyway, most denominations follow similar rites: Baptism, Confirmations, the Eucharist, Ordinations, anointing of the sick, etc.
@Dov Ahkin If I am not mistaken, the Byzantine Christians are mostly Roman Catholics and the Syrian are Orthodox.
Here, in India we have the Roman Catholics and the Orthodox, but I think the Protestants hold the majority.
But if we separate the Protestants according to each their denomination and not as one group, then I think the Roman Catholics would hold the majority.

It's interesting to see the juxtaposition between Koukl and Chopra, Deepak looks angry, smug, agitated and overall unpleasant, while Greg is coherent, confident, pleasant, and holds a genuine smile... that alone speaks volumes in regards to their character and validity of their arguments
You witness the same phenomenon with a Christian/muslin debate. The muslims by the end always look like they're about to go on a jihad.

I have family that believe wholeheartedly what Dr. Chopra puts in his books. I hurt and wish I could convey Jesus Christ's truth to them but they are stubborn and resistant. I pray for them everyday. I have believed in Him since I was about 3 or 4 I am happy to say. I have been tempted by doctrines of demons but by the grace of God, the Holy Spirit has without fail brought me back to God, every time. I have reached a level of maturity where I am finally a true believer and cannot be moved, and though cannot argue using scripture due to brain injury can follow the arguments well enough amd man, this guy is good
