- After crossing the Gulf of Alaska we are ready to go cruising in Prince William Sound. But not so fast, first we have to wait out more stormy weather in Cordova. We leave Cordova and head further north in search of better weather. What we find on the way while fishing requires the harpoon!

This is our trawler life story.
We retired early and decided to make a big change. We sold everything and moved aboard our 54' Cheoy Lee passagemaker, a “go anywhere in the world”, ocean going power boat.
That was in 2014 and we have never looked back.
Now in our late 50's we are free of work and we are living aboard and cruising our trawler full time.
We have two additional crew members, feline brothers, Blake and Barkley. Yes, we have two brave (sorta) boat cats, on board!
Join us and our crew, on our adventures as we explore new places, discover more about our trawler and what makes her work, and learn more about ourselves in our young retirement years. Our hope is to entertain and inspire you to pursue your own passions through telling our story of our cruising trawler lifestyle.

I was surprised when I went through 1/3 of the video without seeing a cat lol.
A friend of mine gave me 50 lb. of Halibut. We cooked it a # of ways, you name it. My 12 yro daughter one day 1/2 through the meat said. “ U know the best way to cook Halibut is with Butter & garlic! !! “ enough said. That’s my girl & the family agreed ! Great eating fish !

I was thinking you guys were not making more videos so I looked you up and find I am not getting your notification of new videos but I clicked the bell and selected all. I used to get all of them and didn't get the last two.
I think its funny when the try to predict weather a month to 6 months. My wife says they say the winter is going to have record cold weather, and I laugh and say don't worry they don't know and I don't know.
One big fish. Halibut is so good.
What scenery WOW. I enjoy the episodes like this one where you are fishing or crabbing. Seafood self sourced to supplement the pantry is always better. I'd grill mine with a cream and garlic sauce to garnish and maybe some spot tail prawns YUM 😊

I show my wife your videos from time to time. When I retire and after the kids are out of the house, we are planning on downsizing to a small house and a motor yacht for cruising Puget Sound, SE Alaska, the Caribbean and the US east coast Loop route. In the off months, I plan to lease it out to make enough money with it to pay for the next season's cruising. That's a good looking halibut, perfect size for eating. All the best to you both.
How much could you lease out a 48’ trawler for a month? Roughly just curious because I am interested in doing the same thing

I got curious when I wrote the previous message, so I looked it up. 400 pound halibut are not unusual near Unalaska Island, where Dutch Harbor is, so while it was a huge fish, it wasn't a record holder. The fish you caught is the perfect size! You can get a few great meals out of that fish!

That orca surfing just before the bulbous bow is getting a free ride due to the high-pressure zone created ahead of that big bulb. I spoke about this in another video that the bow is much too big and that the high-pressure zone shows the effective increase in length of the original boat. Note how the whale starts flapping its tail as soon as it moves out of the pressure zone and how quickly it returns to it and how easy it is for the whale to feel and be so sensitive to that high-pressure zone. Obviously, all that energy absorbed by the whale comes at the expense of the fuel of Sea Venture. Again in my opinion that bulbous bow on such a short boat is accelerating the water laterally a little too fast and I would have shaped that big bulb to decrease the lateral acceleration with a reduction of lower pressure zone at the front of the boat and less thumping on the hull of the boat. Still, Sea Venture is a beautiful boat and the two people shown in the video are a real lady and a gentleman in their manners and deportment. Well done folks. Thank you for welcoming us on board.

The Thomas Basin Harbor here in Ketchikan has a similar path along the breakwater, ours is a concrete sidewalk.

Just got a slip in Everett for our little Ranger Tug R27.New power boaters-sailed many moons ago.San Juans and maybe the Gulf Islands this year.Canada may be open in August.Would love to see a video on your anchoring techniques.Other than coming in to dock, anchoring is the next big stressor for us.

Wow that's a big halibut! Almost the same size as the 51"er I caught in Takatz this year. You had a much easier time landing it than I did from our dinghy. It looks like the spear disabled it pretty quickly? Did you manage to eat all of that?

Interesting narrative.
60 pounds of halibut, that is a massive chunk of food at little cost compared to buying it. When processing it, naturally there were fillets for fish and chips dinners, did you also cut steaks from it for grilling?
Fillets can also be done up in a pan with butter so very useful cut.
Not to steal your thunder, but..I was commercial fishing out of Dutch Harbor in the mid-80's and we brought up a halibut in our nets that was close to 10 feet long. We strung him up below decks, where the ceiling was about 8 feet and his head and tail were too long to fit in that 8 foot space. We got about 400 pounds of steaks off him and brought them back to Seattle when we were done fishing in the Bering Sea. I will never forget the size of that fish! And I have no idea if that is unusual or what.
Oh, we know. For just the two of us this is a perfect size halibut. We caught a 220 lb and a 115 lb about 60 minutes apart once. We were giving away Halibut for months. Thanks, Jim

Just curious as to how many edible pounds you got out of a 60 lb fish. Great video and beautiful fish.
Would have been somewhere between 50 and 60% usable meat so 30-40lbs

You get about 50% of the weight of the fish in boneless filets. Thanks, Jim
One Theory I have ? I think dolphins are drafting like car do in racing. Only in reverse, the path of less resistance for them. Hitchhiking on U ? Tell why they do, Please! If any can ?
What lb test of line you have on for that Halibut? I would want to have about 4 different reels with different lb test lines.
