AND THAT'S A WRAP for Cruising Sea Venture - EP 198
This episode is it! - A wrap up video of our channel. We review our 6 years of making Sea Venture videos and what the future holds for both our cruising and the CZcams channel.
Instagram: cruising_sea_venture
This is our trawler life story.
We retired early and decided to make a big change. We sold everything and moved aboard our 54' Cheoy Lee passagemaker, a “go anywhere in the world”, ocean going power boat.
That was in 2014 and we have never looked back.
Now in our late 50's we are free of work and we are living aboard and cruising our trawler full time.
We have two additional crew members, feline brothers, Blake and Barkley. Yes, we have two brave (sorta) boat cats, on board!
Join us and our crew, on our adventures as we explore new places, discover more about our trawler and what makes her work, and learn more about ourselves in our young retirement years. Our hope is to entertain and inspire you to pursue your own passions through telling our story of our cruising trawler lifestyle.
Thanks for watching, subscribing, and liking Cruising Sea Venture!

Salinas Bay - an old salt mining operation and a ship wreck to explore in the Sea of Cortez - EP 195

We made a one-night stop in Salina’s Bay, a very large, exposed anchorage with an abandoned salt mine operation, which closed in the 1980’s. The water was quite active, bouncing us up and down a little for our night, but by morning it was all calmed down. We went ashore and explored the old salt operation buildings and the salt flats, that are located behind the old town. Also ashore is an acti...

V-Cove - Is it the best anchorage in the Sea of Cortez? EP 193
zhlédnutí 2,5KPřed rokem
Several cruisers had told us V-Cove was one of their favorite anchorages in the Sea of Cortez, and it did not disappoint. Most anchorages in the Sea are quite open. With maybe an exception or two, there are no “all weather” anchorages, meaning they are all open to at least one direction. In V-Cove you had pretty good protection for 3 of 4 directions, which makes it special all by itself. But, i...

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I was a commercial fisherman for ten years back in the 70s and 80s, and transitted Wrangell Narrows a total of 15 times, with both daytime and nightime trips. Keeping track of the lights at night is a challenge - especially with oncoming commercial traffic.

How long was your boat? Is it a steel hull or fiberglass. Do most boats these days have radar? I've bee from Seward to Friday Harbor in Puget Sound on a 44-foot wooden boat and several times from Pelican to Friday Harbor when I was in my late teens and mid-twenties, with no radar.

When I was around 19 years old I took a trip from Prince William Sound to Icy Strait in Southeast with no stops. No radar in those days, just Alaska Coast Pilot. I was a lone crew member in a 44-foot wooden boat, with a net in the hold and a seine skiff hanging over the stern. Dull trip but I would in a latr year know what real rough water was.

I'm in the process of selling my house with my eye on some 44 Trader/Nova/CHB's in Seattle/Anacortes and will be making an offer as soon as my house sells. Sea Venture is probably the best-designed and best-built/maintained trawler I've seen. I had a 45 CHB Trawler in Washington State that I miss very much. At the moment I'm boatless and living in North Carolina. I really love the San Juans and BC Inside Passage. Living in Anchorage for 17 years, I also have come to appreciate and love the Alaska Waterways you show in your videos. This brings back memories! Back in, in must have been 2007 or so, my brother called me to say that he and his wife Jan were going up the inland waters of BC on their live-aboard boat (a 49-foot Alaskan trawler) for an extended trip but Jan had to fly back out after 2 weeks for work, so could I possibly fly up to meet him and help take the boat back to Seattle. I said, " well, it's a tough job, but I guess I can do it." I flew out to Seattle, spent a night at my aunt's houseboat on Lake Union, then took a float plane from the north end of Lake Washington to Minstrel Island to meet them, and we headed north for a spell, made it as far as Sullivan Bay on Broughton Island, then headed back south and moored at Echo bay, saw Billy Proctor's museum and talked with him for a half an hour, then dropped Jan off for her flight to Seattle and headed off south through the inland islands. We stopped off at Princess Louisa Inlet - one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen - for a day or two, then went back down to Shilshole Marina in Seattle. He had to sell the boat the next year, so that was the last big cruise. It was one of the memorable trips of my life. I shot a lot of video on an old tape camcorder, condensed it down to 2+ hours of video. It's available at the links below, if anyone is willing to tolerate a somewhat long, completely amateur low-resolution documentation of our trip. At least it gives a flavor of cruising life. . The more room in the engine room the better🙂I've never seen an engine room so clean on an older boat like that, you've done an amazing job. If we could find an older boa tin half that condition I could do the rest. Great idea on the belts, we did that all the time for customers. If you're lucky you could get 20,000 hours before those engines need a re-build. We usually saw them need rebuild around 12,000 hours if they were not taken care of. We saw some owners who pushed to 30,000 no problem, but they were very tired. In compression testing, they were pretty much done. On the older ones we did have to rebuild the fuel injection pumps.

    @kirkwilliams4942 Před rokem

We've been looking at larger boats but they are so expensive. I would not even begin to think of something as old as the vessel you have but you have opened my eyes. I know those Lehamns like the back of my hand as we were the dealer in SoCal long ago. I would not mind having an older GrandBanks 42 or 49 if I could find one with Lehans or Cummins but NEVER 3208 CATS. Thanks so much for your input. Look me up if you ever have questions about those engines, if I can remember. I believe I have some useful tech insights on those as well. Just keep here maintained, change those impellers once a year, the oil and trans coolers every 4 years, and an acid bath on the heat exchangers every 4 years. Watch the exhaust system. You also need to have the injectors pulled every couple of years for pop testing, adjustment, or replacement and make sure to presure test the fuel return line, They are notorious for leaking and diluting your engine oil. I'd also replace the lift pup every few years and carry a spare raw water pump. Thermostats have been known to go bad and replace belts every couple of years. Keep spare hoses at least for one engine:-) And change the heat exchanger zinks often and use a 1/8 wood dowle to keep in clean.

She sure looks much more stable with the bulbous bow. She is your vessel, if you notice the difference then it's all worth it. Are there. a few cons? Yes, but again, doesn't matter if it improved your ride on your vessel. I wonder why Nordhaven doesn't do that on their boats, at least the smaller range. I bet the new n41 would benefit from a BB.
