Garmadon turning black can be explained for a few reasons actually, it could be that it was because he turned evil or 2 other reasons that could spoil parts of the show(a future season and a short, which you can watch)

I would recommend watching the 2011 Ninjago Mini-movies before jumping into season 1. The first 4 are filler, but fun, but the fifth and final one explains how garmadon gained control of the skulkin army and how he was banished to the underworld.
Just so you know they have like three movies of this not counting the newest one I’m talking about the old ones they show us what happens for it to lead up to Lego ninjago masters of spinjujutsu basically everything that happens before the show is in the old Lego ninjago movies
I watched it with the kid I was babysitting. He couldn't stop talking about it and so I started watching it with him.... when he wanted to watch something else I convinced him to keep watching it XD
For why Garmadon looks black, It was shown in one of the mini-movies that were released before Season 1. Garmadon was struck by magic lightning, which of course fried him and fused his ribs to his skin. And it sent him straight to the Underworld. You can watch those mini-movies on CZcams if you want

You should still probably watch it if you have time unless you really got bored with it bc I've seen alot of older people who still enjoys watching it and are still very dedicated to it.
