Join me in todays Wyoming ranching VLOG as I make some tasty round bales for the cows to eat this winter. We have been raking and baling early in the morning to try and get the optimal moisture content in the bales (15-20%).

I’ve spoiled bales at 16% moisture. And also had bales that kept at 25%
Plant moisture is your enemy.
I found that when I switched to netwrap, that chaff pile from being too dry is greatly reduced

Agree with your observations completely. There is a significant difference between stem moisture and ambient moisture (dew moisture). Its a tricky endeavor getting it put up right

Thanks for sharing sir. No rest for the weary 😅 I can smell that hay from here. What type of grass is it there? What? No break downs with the equipment when you need it the most? 😅

Meadow brome, alfalfa, crested wheat… dont worry, we have our share of break downs :)

This is an awesome and very informative video - thank you for posting it! I am curious though, does regional climate affect ideal baling moisture and storage/nutrition "shelf life,", for example, say Tennessee versus Wyoming with the humidity?

Thanks! That is a great question… I would guess that once the bale is rolled up, the exterior weather factors are kind of irrelevant. But living in a more humid environment would definitely pose challenges to making sure the windrows are baled at a optimal and consistent moisture level? Idk

Good looking hay! Just curious, are ever able to get more than one cutting with that mixture of grass and alfalfa?

We usually just get one cutting on our dry land hay, then graze whatever grows back. Thanks for watching

That hay looked really good. I'd buy it for sure. How many tons per acre are you getting down there with dry land hay?

Thanks! We get about 2 tons per acre +\- on that field… a little less on some of the other fields that aren’t so low lying

Wouldn’t dare bale any hay that tested above 15% moisture unless I put preservative on it. But I bale 3x4 bales
