  • Join me in todays Wyoming ranching VLOG as we face a frightening and inevitable component of ranch life in the summer: fire season. This summer has shaped up to be one of the worst fire seasons in some time, with ample fuel and very hot, dry temperatures. Many fires have been burning in our area over the past few weeks, and we had been hoping to avoid any getting started on our place. But, not so much to our surprise, we did have a run in with a large fire that burned up to within 50 yards of our property line before it was extinguished by our awesome local fire crews. It is still unknown as to what started the fire, but it ended up burning about 6,000 acres of ranch land, threatening livestock operations, personal residences, and wildlife, not to mention burning many telephone lines and miles of cattle fencing. Follow along in this episode as we contend with this big demon.

9 miles long and a mile wide, at last report. My husband Chris is the county fire warden. They are all working harder than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest. Just had a lightning storm come thru with lotsa wind and no rain. Hang in there buddy!!

I was living in Casper right off the highway when Casper mountain burned down. I’ll never forget the sound of that fire coming down the mountain as we raced to help the ranchers get livestock and horses to safety. Stay safe out there

Wow burned right up to your property to where the road and slurry was. Looks like a great plan by all those involved. That drone is a great tool, isn’t it?! Thanks for sharing

So something I never heard you mention was what ranchers in your state do to reach out to your neighbors with offers to help with grazing some of their cattle or contributing hay. Was just wondering if help may be needed by some or if you guys even reach out with offer of help. In Texas that is the number two priority.

Great question. As a rule, we in the agricultural community in WY always stand ready to help neighbors in times of need. As of now, I am not aware of any immediate critical needs arising from this event. We are in a fat hay and grass year this year which definitely helps mitigate these needs. Also, even though 8,000 acres is nothing to scoff at, the fire really wasn’t very big in the grand scheme of things relative to the size of many of the ranching outfits in this area. Thanks for watching

as a former category 1 firefighter (hotshot) i am surprised you can fly a drone at the fire
normally project fires have aircraft involved, and we might think drones would be forbidden there (as they are for many other locations, for different reasons)
also, would you consider a low-level, crawl-through grass fire once a decade or so a good thing for your land?
(i guess it would be tough to allow that, 'cause wind conditions here, but if it weren't too dry, do you suppose it would be good if we could do it? good for the cattle and the land, if doable? i know that is too big of an if, so just theoretically)

i should have waited till watching to the end
you already answered my first question

    • @WYORancher307

I was several miles from the fire using a telephoto lens on my drone, also the fire had just gotten started and I don’t think there was any air traffic at that point. As I got closer to the fire and air crews started responding, I made sure to ground the drone.
Fire is definitely good for the country… its just hard to lose the grazing for a season, not to mention the threat to livestock, dwellings, fences, telephone lines etc.
      Thanks for watching
