Making a Camaro Barn Find ready to Sell! - Vice Grip Garage EP73

- čas přidán 14. 05. 2020
- A guy purchased this 1979 Camaro site unseen, almost to the month a year ago. Since then, it's just been waiting to be cleaned up. Originally, I had plans to do a full restoration on the camaro, as the 78/79 are one of my favorite years, but other projects have now taken precedence. I'm going to do a quick "rehab" on the ol' girl and just send it down the line. This way, we save a classic, and someone else can take over where I'm leaving off.

I found an old aspen wagon in a barn once ... after staring at it for 20 minutes I decided it would be easier to put the barn on the road .
LOL
The barn would also be more attractive.
@@unicornsteaks6769 I don't know about that ... that aspen wagon had woodgrain down the side which , now that i think about it , could have been trees growing through the doors ... I couldn't get close enough to tell on a count of the all the bees
This is a good one
Chrysler said the same thing, but it was too late .
"There's a very specific reason I'm using wizards polish today, I already had it" lololol
My wife always knows when I'm watching your videos. I'm laughing my ass off. Your humor is priceless!
"Whatever happened to Clint Black? he is such a nice guy!"
In order to make it look easy he has to be a great mechanic with A Lot of experience, Don't let his humor and nonchalant attitude fool you. He's a master mechanic with
tons of knowledge and skill. Love it!
"9 didn't work so I just cranked it up it 105" He'd make a great Diesel Mechanic.
haha!
that cracked me up! :)
What's 9 for soap suds?
"What do you want from me, what do you need here?"
The life of a mechanic distilled into two questions
Works for Plumbers too!
yeahitskimmel if only..haha bring the thunder....that’s easy
My favorite line of the video
Finally figured out who he reminds me of - a beloved character - Red Green.
Me too. I thought he had to be from Canadada.
I think a cross between Red Green and Harland Williams.
Agree that you are a younger Red Green. Also was that an ‘84 cutlass behind the Camaro (see before pic at 22:30)?
@@Narpets2112 a lot of Wisconsin and Minnesota natives have a very Canadian accent but i thought the same thing till he mentioned what state he's in.
“If women don’t find you handsome they should at least find you handy”
Those 305 engines are very underrated on alot of these channels. They are a very well rounded strong, reliable motor.
I can honestly say this guy is the Bob Ross of car restoration , cool calm and collected
Holy crap I was describing this channel to someone as just that... The Bob Ross of mechanics. a couple days ago. Now I see your comment. Glad to know I'm not the only one that got that vibe lol
@@Panchinator90 only on camera bahaha highly edited outbursts cut it isn't easy fixing left over garbage ya know
Bob Ross meets Red Green
I love how he says what every guy is thinking while working in the engine bay, minus alot of curse words 😆
What do want from me?
@@eriklarson9137 If you watch the video, he asked the car that question when he was having trouble removing something

@@eriklarson9137 did you even watch the video?
Derek, you have got to be one of the most down to earth guys I've seen on the web. You should publish a book just on your sayings. Almost spit my coffee out a few times. LOL. I love how you get the job done and make people laugh while you're doing it. Always look forward to your video's. Thanks for helping us to forget about all the crap going on in the world around us. Take care my friend.
Well said.
thanks Derrick, I almost gave up working on my lawn mower and then I thought of you working on cars out in a field in the middle of no where, I got back to work and fixed it, thank you for the inspiration
His we can fix it attitude definitely rubs off on us after a while
I've binge watched the majority of your videos and I really enjoyed watching you get more comfortable in front of the camera and really developed your "character" over the course of your channel. You are hilarious to watch and always create great content. I bet having a couple beers around a fire with you must be a blast!! Keep up the great content and I'll keep watching!! I get excited just a scoche when a new vice grip garage video pops up!
Wow, thank you! I've learned to just be myself and "not care" as much. Remember the first video you watched of yourself at christmas years ago? that's how I used to feel during every EP. Not anymore!
@@ViceGripGarage You're not just a great car-saver-on'er, you're also hilarious. I'll bet I could drink beer with you.
Nailed it Tim!
Love the amount of content coming from the Quarantine Classic! Hope all is well with you and yours.
Thanks, you as well
@@ViceGripGarage I wish you could have warned a fella that you was selling the Dodge!
It would have lived a life of cruising and Sonics
Awesome job on the find and slickener up. I still have my 1977 Camaro, I am the 2nd owner, I bought it in 1983 at the age of 15, I mower a lot of yards, washed a lot of dishes at a restaurant, and worked in my Dad's Garage for that money. I will never sell it. Love your Channel. Lot's of love from the American Hillbilly and the Hillbilly Nation, Hillbilly Up brother.
I got my family saying “cold snacks” now. The lingo is of utmost importance.
Thats factory.
Edit: Would like to add that I really enjoy these videos and I hope you enjoy making them as much!
Keep doin' it feller. *cold snack clinkers*
Thanks, will do!
Having a wobley pop and enjoying this video, how much did you sell her for.
The wheel and tires took the car to a new level. Great job hope it lives on.
alum wheels are good, they just need white letter stuff too!
@Vice Grip Garage
“This car reminds me of Barney, she just hugs the road.” Lost my mouthful on that line. Looks great. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Derek, a guy has to look good on a test drive, and that cowboys hat just simply gives you a country rock star look! You gotta wear that more in the vids. I know the black baseballer cap has the 'ol VGG logo on itself - but when something magically transfoms a guy to the next level and makes your better line of viewers so goddam happy - just do it!
“Yeap that’s way too much..............perfect”
Another classic
Derek does have that 'comedic timing' down to a science.
Those shots after 3 west Virginia had me like 😲
Thanks Chris
It just needed a voice over from Richard Hammond
@@LeArmBoss he'd crash it.
anyone know the music derek used ? love it. !
Good choice on the new shoes Derek. She looks real nice.
That hood takes the most beating because it doesn't have just the heat from the sun but without a protective layer mounted under the hood the heat from the engine beats on the hood from underneath as well. Well done showing the old girls smile back.
Derick, love your channel !!!!! Maybe you should come up with a window sticker that you can put on the cars you sell, that show people that , that car was one of yours, bought by someone. And no one else has one, unless they bought one of your cars!! Just a thought 🤔 the Old VT logger!
This is the car that got me hooked on the channel now I can’t get enough
it's a neat car for sure
Same
Just like the Ry Hanna lady says, "shine bright like a diamond."
It took me a minute 😂😂
I have a bad sleeping pattern and this actually helps me get through the tough stages......You sir are amazing, stay funny, stay informative and stay safe ✅🖤🥃
reading this at 3:30 am...yup, sames
You have the best videos on u-tube. Driving those death traps down the roads without seat belts is crazy! I hope your wife has a big insurance policy on you when the car falls apart at 65 MPH. Wear seat belts if the car has them because you are one of a kind! Take care amigo and keep those videos rolling. T Adam
I lost my mind laughing. This episode is epic
thanks travis
Man the wheels set it off. Great choice!
Thanks 👍 appreciate it
A guy said “bonnet and boot” 👒 & 🥾 thank you Derek 🇬🇧
I already loved this channel and then he hits me with the “1 West Virginia, 2 West Virginia, 3 West Virginia and then a beautiful camaro is shown. I love it here
I don't think you can call these camaros beautiful. These are the ugliest of them. These are even uglier than the cheese wedge style bodies of the 90s.
Love your content, my kind of mechanic. I inherited the nickname "bodge it Berty" if I couldn't fix it with zip ties and duct tape it was replaced. Much respect from the Scottish Highlands
Heh. Zip ties are nothing but the fancy modern substitute for (hay) baling wire. The saying I learned in South Alabama was, if you can't fix it with duct tape, J-B Weld, or "bailin' wahr', it's broke for shore.
Word of the day, "scoshe" Derrick you made that thing much gooder!
scoshe i think is korean for just a little bit !

This guy is the man. Idk if anyone doesn't like him but if so idk why or how. This guy is so damn knowledgeable and most importantly easy to listen to and even funny as shit lol love his content I could listen and watch all day (and I do) lol keep up the awesome work my dude we love it !!!
Hi from England,
Thanks for the bonnet & boot words, but you forgot windscreen.
"9 wasn't working. So let's just shoot all the way up to a hundred and five" This guy is a legend.
The year was 1981 and my sisters first really nice car was a 79, camaro berlinetta. Bronze inside and out with the honeycomb style wheels. 350 turbo I borrowed that car every chance I got.
My Dad used to own a 1984 Ford LTD Crown Victoria when I was a kid. I found one for sale in Ohio last year and I've been working to try and get it up and running to give to him as I think he would really like the old girl. However, I'm no mechanic and it's been really tough to get a lot of the project done (there are not a lot of videos on how to work on them). I did buy the repair manual for it, but there are a lot of pieces to keep moving. One of the things I've been having trouble with is the engine and distributor. I really appreciate your channel because you work a lot with very similar models of these things and it is helping me to figure out how to repair the car. Hopefully I'll be done with the project soon and can give her to my Dad!
I love it he says where's Clint Black he's such a nice fella I lost it... he already makes me want to pee myself laughing with his funny antics but he throws one of my favorite country singers out there...👍👍👍
Between you and UTG I'm steadily beginning to think I might actually be able to get my weird old car doing what I want it to. Thanks for what you do man, you're helping make this hobby accessible to people who can't afford to throw tens of thousands of dollars around.
Independence Shirts came in today. Me and the Mrs. love them. Keep doing what you are doing.
Awesome! Thank you for the support!
Got mine yesterday as well. Great birthday present from my parents.
This car is my favorite of your whole collection. More grand national content please!!!
Wish you had this thing still. I'm close to your new shop and I would have bought this.
man there are mechanics on youtube that making everything perfect safe and pretty you do it real make the car actually nice keep up the good work
I really like your show it's entertaining keep doing what you're doing
Glad you enjoy it!
I literally get off work every day and sit and watch and rewatch episodes! He’s a comedian
Obviously a genius mechanic. So fricken funny in a down to earth way. It would be great to have a cold snack with this guy.
I talk to myself the whole time I'm working on my 70 F100. You crack me up.
24:17 "What's he got going over here now? Oh, he's fertilizing." Lololol. That sounds exactly like the voice in my head as I drive around looking at stuff.
yeah, I just blurt out what my brain thinks unfortunately, no filter
@@ViceGripGarage Yup, I have the same problem. Every time I see a politician, I have an uncontrollable urge to say lying bastard.
Laughing, there you have it!
@@matthewgodwin3050 that's a specialised form of turetts syndrome. It's called poletts and more and more people are showing symptoms.
Your videos have the best sales presentation at the end of the video. Great views and camera motion accompanied with good tunes. Always enjoy the Vice Grip Garage shows.
I had this same car back in 1982. It was my first car. 4 speed 4 barrel. I am not a car guy but I love to watch.
I have a bunch of fun in that car.
I owned a '78. I drove it everywhere.
To start it, I used old speaker wire wedged in the space between the glove compartment and the dash and put them together to get it to whirl.
To put it in gear, I had to grab the steering column and twist it since the cable for the floor shifter was broken.
Good times.
"looks like I had a bout with Papa Smurf" - I thought it looked more like "I had a bout with an airplane toilet"
i was gunna say he had fun with smurfette ....
It is a pretty unpleasant motor sort of cool but crap too
Had to laugh when you brought the timing light out , mine hasn't been out of the tool chest in 10 years
I wish mine worked but since I need it once every seven years at the dealer level, I never bought another.
Turned out a lot better.
Thanks for the suggestion, vice grip and hammer guy.
That was awesome...a guy had a ‘79 type LT back in the 90’s when he was a kid..same interior..brought back just a scoshe of a fond memory
One of my favorite reoccurring lines from VGG. "Yeah that's... way too much...perfect."
The way you say I don't know and shrug is the funniest.😀😁
I had a ‘79 Berlinetta so a guy really likes seeing this car get saved!
You are a great teacher. 👍
Thank you Derek for all the awesome videos you put up for us during these trying times. It is really great to see a "famous" person like you taking the time to comment on the posts of us car noobs. From your fan in South Africa. JC.
That car brings back a lot of memories. My best friend had one of those in high school when we went everywhere in that thing.
This guy always cracks me up
What a swell lookin lil gal ! This era of Camaro is my favorite (especially ones with the Berlinetta trim)
A nice reliable small block v8 and a turbo350 trans. You can run that girl to town all day and just cruise on the rig.
I love the way when you give something your own name lightening whirler that it makes sense to anyone with a knowledge of cars.keep up the good work👍🏻
I personally like the lightning hoses and the fuel make-it-happener.
Turned out great specially with those wheels. As always, a nice eclectic mix of music.
Amazed anyone would spend so much time polishing paint on a paint job that far gone .
Love the random comments "what ever happened to Clint Black, he's just a nice guy. The smell of mice is just Thick!" Haha🤣
"That's way too much, perfect!" I love it...
thansk for watching
I really appreciate these videos… I got an old 72 F100 Ranger I’m gonna try to bring the paint back around on it… It’s got some rust on the hood, top of the cab, and bed rails but I’m just gonna clean er up with some steel wool and leave it and put some boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits on it… Thanks again I really love your work and thank you for saving these old classics. 🙌🏼💪🏼
Ok so I really REALLY like the cinematography and music of the finished project !!!!
The old girl came up great the wheels work brilliantly on it.
Thanks 👍
In 1978 I and a friend of mine rented a car in Philadelphia. They asked us if we wanted a compact or a subcompact we were puzzled. You can have the car outside. It turned out to be a Blue Camaro!!!
Derek cracks me up. Names all the stuff they're going to do cosmetically and not sure if the car will even run, lol!!!
I love it but a guy needs to put a rear spoiler on the ol girl. Entertaining video for someone painting there 78 Z28 at the moment. This hit the spot.
That nose cone is nice and speckled. She did a lot of lines of high octane back in the day if ya know what I mean.
Agreed this body style is so naked without the spoiler.
"What happened to Clint Black, he's such a nice guy." I lost it lol
that one did me in as well
When I was in high school I had a 79 with that same color interior. I bought it cheap with no motor or trans and the after effects of an engine fire. I put a olds 403 and a turbo 400 in it that I had and had a blast with it till I went in the military. Good times.
That car is from the era that I started buying cars from. My first car I drove was a 1968 Country Squire station wagon with simulated wood paneling on the side. Had a 390 in it. Then a Chevette. Then a 79 Chevy station wagon. Then...well, the story goes on...
Love that year Camaro I bought one when I was 14 year's old I would like to have another one but for the right price and love the channel keep up the hard work guy
Another classic!!! You always have me crackin up!! 😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed
Best hand gestures on youtube right here, keep them up.
Well, a guy used to work in a body shop, and I did about 82.7% of the wet sanding and bufferlating. I think your paint restoration looks absolutely FACK-TREE!
Reminds me of my 78 Firebird I had when I was flunking outta college. . . The first time! Great job on the paint, she warshed up good!!
I had an 82 TA when I was flunking out of college the only time! ;) Good times.
This content keeps me away from all asinine political shit... Thank you.
Stimulus this, small businesses that, face mask here ,covid-19 there. EIEIO !!!
The same here
Me too. I watch all of them
Me too!
TRUMP WON! .............Sorry......but no democrats are here obviously! What they don't hear won't hurt them!
Check out some 3M finishing material purple and black bottle for your compound. It'll cut it one step.
Had this car back in the mid 80's , watching this brought back a lot of memories .
Looks great! I'd love to drive it as it is. Replace parts that break with speedparts. It'll be a racecar in no-time! haha!
Clint Black is fine...
"just killing time" like me, just working on my junk collection, a guy has to stay busy!

He is an ostomy kick kick. Doesn't let anything bother him
You left it in a nice base starting position for a good rebuild , that car will make someone a great project and they can end up with a real gem

Nice tips on the wet sanding Derek @ViceGripGarage
"The lightning wirler" I almost feel of my chair
my dad had a Camaro just like this and my mom had to sell it when he passed so that brought back some feels. You took good care of the old girl. thanks for the video.
Those wheels and tires completely changed the look.
They sure did!
