Detective Pikachu: Why It Works (No Spoilers)

- Video game movies have never really had a good reputation for good reason, Detective Pikachu, however, seems to be breaking that trend. I wanna talk about why that is and a few specific choices Game Freak themselves made going into this joint production that really elevated this movie, to at least something more.

your necklace and shirt are sending mixed signals
Makes perfect sense to me. Now, where did I put that ruler...
It works because Mr Mime is a better father figure than my dad ever was
"Even when sonic games are bad they still feel like sonic"
Holy shit someone gets it
Also I loved this movie to death
I realized it as soon as I watched Detective Pikachu what the problem was for a lot of Hollywood Adaptations for videogames. A lot of videogame adaptations mold what the videogames are about to our world, following our geology, rules, and physics. Detective Pikachu however, does the opposite, and instead molds our world to the Pokemon world instead. For a simplier way to say it; it's humans in the Pokemon world, and not Pokemon in the Human World. It may be confusing because there are already humans in the Pokemon world obviously, but I hope you get the point I'm trying to make.
I kinda get what you mean. If they tried to mold Pokemon into our world, they take away what makes them unique and try to force real world logic to them. I'm glad that they didn't, thus making it more enjoyable.
@@agentofxehanort Yeah, exactly that
The Arcanine was kind of hot
No furry
@@DimitriMonroewew, you had me worried for a second
@@PromKnight Was just an observation on his type.
@@DimitriMonroe nice try, but I'VE SEEN THE NSFW PINNEDS >:3
Horny posting on main again?
It works because it has heart. It doesn't feel like a souless cash-grab, it feels like a movie made by fans.
Besides, Ryan Reynolds absolutely kills it with the best performance in the movie by far.
Quite liked the Fortnite movie adaption Avengers End Game
I really want a pokemon ranger movie its a part of pokemon that doesn't get enough love
Nice of you to sneak in Shad's edit at 4:12.
I kinda figured out why he can hear pikachu when we learned who pikachu was. Mewtwo made it so the boy could understand… he needed to get the boy back somehow right? It just… made sense… he wasn’t only bringing down someone… he also did things in a way to bring together a family. The only part I was confused by was why the boy didn’t recognise the voice… (yes I’ve forgotten his name as well, but I was kinda busy squealing over the bulbasaur… and most of the movie…)
This thumbnail is extremely cute. Like the person it's based on.
Blushes
I just wanna point out that this movie made Mr.Mime, one of the most unintentionally creepy looking Pokémon, into a genuinely funny character. Seriously, the Mr.Mime scene was my favorite part of the movie.
I just love the fact that there is a Pokemon film that pulls off Blade Runner references better than Ridley Scott can these days.
Glad to hear we have the same favorites in MCU movies! I also agree regarding Detective Pikachu, it's not a perfect movie by any means, but it feels like the first video game movie where the creators actually tried to make a legitimately good movie, and not just cash in on a game's popularity. It's a solid 7/10 movie, at least for me.
I think the naughty humour is a carry-over from the anime, rather than something unique to the movie. There were a LOT of jokes we didn't get as kids, but after going back as an adult are far too obvious to the point where you wonder how they got them past the radar.
Great video. I would love to see a Fallout movie. Like with Detective Pikachu, you can have an original story set in the universe that works for a 2 hour movie
Man, who would've ever guessed that having the people that make the source material you're basing your movie/show on helps make it feel a lot better.
Not most of Hollywood that's for fucking sure
This movie resurrected my childhood. Time to pull out my card collection
I always enjoy when you put up wholesome videos Monroe.
Jesus fuck, I forgot that Monster Hunter shit. God dammit, Dimitri
detective pikachu works
Pikachu: that's a twist!
I just watched the YMS review, but I’m glad this vid gives me a bit of a different perspective.
I like that descriptor, that it seems like a blockbuster film that could exist in the world of pokemon.
I feel like it works because it already has such a huge net that'd it be impossible for it to fail. From young kids to people in their 40's there are so many who had an interest in pokemon at one point or another. The focus isn't even on the pokemon battling or catching where non-fans would be completely lost as you just kinda need to know that it's a thing and that's about it since it's used as set pieces as opposed to being the point. From there you just need a decent story and there you go, instant success.
Mr.Mime is still the most hilarious pokemon in the film! Nothing could top that fucking Mr. Mime!
Mewtwo thicc tho
The movie didn't do his thighs justice. Tragic.
I just saw the shadman reference you mad man
Great video, since you mentioned the topic of Thor 3 and the GotG movies would you make a video about it?
When i realised i was watching two random guys with his pokemons getting into a superevil organization's secrets without making cuestions it remembered me of the games
I noticed that Shad edit
Thank you Monroe, very cool.
where does that Pikachu sound at 1:24 come from? Is that simply your edited voice or someone else?
Reminder that Jordan Vogt-Roberts said he wants to make a no-dialogue, all-isolated atmospheric Metroid movie, with him citing Drive as an inspiration of sorts.
Your reminder that it may never happen for a number of reasons and Detective Pikachu's praise and success may not change that, leaving us to suffer.
I thought the movie was just okay overall but I do admire how much they paid respect to the source material. I am not sure what to expect next (I heard it was a sequel to Detective Pikachu) but it should be interesting to see what they do.
Dude i love your voice omg
The Shädman Sonic 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
It just works
Turns out the Sonic movie slapped. Good, I'm glad we are breaking this bad video game movie curse.
Good review.
I've just seen that they blocked your video about the Pokemon games - holy cow, that's shitty. Are you going to make a follow up or anything like that regarding Sword&Shield?
Can I have a link to your review of Pokemon the power of us please?
Scott pilgrim vs the world.
It's easily the best video game movie adaptation. On that merit it does its job well, as a film overall it's just very standard and nothing really special. I can understand the mixed reaction in that regard. However I wouldn't lie and say I'm annoyed at people for acting Bi-Polar when it comes to opinions. A huge pet peeve of mine is when people go "This will be the best thing ever" or "this is the worst thing ever" then all of a sudden act like what they said or did before doesn't exist and just come out with another feeling that contradicts that. It's fine to not like the film, even I'll admit as someone who does like the film the story and acting are the weakest parts of the film. (The Sonic movie apologists bashing the film are annoying me though)
It's very clear that the story was never suppose to be a strongsuit of the film, I even went in expecting it to be as such. And while that doesn't excuse the story as a weak element I say that what the film did in terms of world building more than makes up for it. Pokemon was never about story to begin with, aside from Gen 5 I can't think of a Pokemon game that deep in its story. Pokemon has always been about the battles and the world itself and Detective Pikachu captures that. You feel like its a world where these creatures could live in, and it captures how they would be in our own world. Still it would've been nice to have relatable human characters, I enjoyed Tim's dynamic with Pikachu, but he's weak outside of that. (At least he has a personality compared to the game though)
What I also liked about the film is how it didn't fall into the same trap most video game films did, there wasn't some alternate world Pikachu came from to meet humans, the Pokemon didn't get sent to the real world, nor was there an excuse just to have them team-up with a Hollywood/famous actor for simple cash cow or viewer trap. It's about a world where these creatures exist, just like the games do.
Ikuhara has a new anime.
Wasn't Warcraft was made mostly for fans too and basically almost no one outside of fanbase liked it
Pika Maturity... heh
Detective Pikachu was great! Now how do you feel about Pokemon first movie evolutions?
this video was really good, please make more like this and less about lgbt community drama
The movie was alright, people who are Pokemon fans are definitely gonna get the most out of this movie (duh) I went with my mom and sh had no idea what was happening half the time XD
Literally the last video I watched was literally Adams film giving it a 2/10
imo both videos are right :)
@@alonsotoon I personally disagree but that's just me being awkward = )
Its because there wasn't any horse pokemon
I hope people who have to wiki Mewtwo don't exist.
Assassins Creed movie is in the same universe and failed miserable. The video gives me hope that I'll enjoy it.
While I do agree about this movie, I don't agree with Alola being dumbed down. In all honesty, as a pokemon fan who's played every generation, I'll admit. pokemon Moon is the only pokemon game that I completed all the way and even beat the Elite Four. With all other iterations, I dropped it halfway due to boring grueling or the story not being interesting/not enough of it paced well to make the chugging along and leveling up worth it.
My friend came from the cinema, and said that he just saw the best video game movie ever made...... I'm still confused, heh
To be honest I want to really good legend of Zelda movie but I doubt that's going to happen maybe... 😒
Pika pika
Spoiler
He can understand Pikachu because it’s his dad
they worked with pokemon experts? what? did those pokemon experts get a degree in pokeology or something? 😂 sorry but at 2:53 WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A POKEMON EXPERT 😂 I bet I could be a pokemon expert. sign me up!
lmao your shirt
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the thing about Tim being able to understand Pikachu isn't a plot hole, but rather just something that's not explained within the movie?
I thought a plot hole was when a plot point contradicts another.
When one point contradicts another that's just a contradiction. When something isn't explained, that's a hole. Hence the name.
A super smash bros movie WILL happen, it WILL sell better than avatar or the avengers, and it WILL be a classic.
Huge let down for me, and justice smith can not act his way out of a barrel
Ugh, don't remind me about the monster Hunter movie. Don't get me wrong, it's not like they have much to work with story-wise from the source, but one of the most bland and cliche story synopsis that can be used to describe almost every video game adaptation, one even Sonic seems to be following? It just makes me so sad as a long time MH and Pokemon fan, it's a little bitter sweet to see one be so much better than the other one will likely be...oh well, at least I'll still get huge cool monsters fighting each other, just with the added blandness of a stereotypical urban sprawl setting...
Not to be that dude but, how did you define "works"? I didn't think it worked via my definition being a good film, but you seem to be saying it works because it's for the fans and respects them (UNLIKE DOOM! AGAIN!) But I would say that's not something working that's just the dudes having good ethics.
Has this gone over my head? Please help
It worked as a pokemon movie, you mentioned doom for example that does not work as a doom movie. Good or bad it's a pokemon movie which does not ring true of most video game adaptions.
@@DimitriMonroe ahhh I get ya, kinda like how castlevania's show worked as a good adaptation? But then again castlevania's show was surprisingly good I didn't see that coming at all
@@rollingon5566 Yea I'm really looking forward to the dmc anime the guy is tackling next. Hoepfully its at the same quality.
