Us came out in 2019?!?!? Dang it’s been a long year...
Yeah well what came out in 2020? Nothing? Mm-hmm...
@@gentlemansomething2886 Lets see, The Hunt, Gretel & Hansel, The Invisible Man, Underwater, yep no Horror movies came out this year
@liam Altork the lodge too.
Right!!! Ironically, I'm re-watching "Us" right Now!!!😜
I thought Midsommar and The Lighthouse were masterpieces
Same
This is it chief. I’ve seen midsommar 5 times and the lighthouse twice. I gotta get the lighthouse on Blu-ray ASAP
Same!
jvckhmr I totally love Midsommar
jvckhmr i loathed the Lighthouse.
i looooved doctor sleep and am still so sad it didnt get the attention it deserved :-( an underrated gem as far as stephen king adaptations go
i COMPLETELY agree. when i watched it i was so floored of it's beauty. a true masterpiece!
@AreYouIntoHorror? I did, actually, back in 2016. It is possible to like film adaptations that take some creative liberty from the original text.
No it isn't.
Yes. It was made so so beautifully it made my cry lol :))) better than it in my opinion
It was amazing, it shows how the elites gain power from us.
My most Fave of 2019 is..... The Lighthouse 💡 and Midsommar! 🌸
My least Fave: Cats 🐱
Honorable Mentions to Ready or Not🃏 and Climax 💃.
Cats was maybe bad, but it was definitively the scariest.
i will have to check out both
climax 💃🥂
cats is a HORROR FILM for sure
I cannot believe there’s no emoji for a lighthouse
Ready or Not was the biggest surprise for me. The "deal with the devil" angle felt kinda like an overused trope. But I liked the the cat and mouse survival part of it. Very suspenseful. Plus the comedy just added an extra something and kept it from being too serious.
Ma was the biggest disappointment for me. If you saw the trailer you pretty much saw the movie itself. It gave away too much.
Give Villains a chance the balance between horror an comedy works better in my opinion
@@erikramaekers63 I just watched the trailer for it now. With Bill Skarsgard! I'll check it out. Thanks! 🙂
I unfortunately haven’t seen ready or not yet, but I can agree with Ma- I actually had high hopes for the film but the whole movie was predictable, had ignorant characters, and Octavia Spencer was the only redeeming quality. But as you said, the whole movie is in the trailer.
Rob K. Honestly Ready or Not kind of bored me toward the end bc I thought it was gonna end in one of those "someone comes to rescue her" scenes, but the twist at the end when we see that their "deal with the devil" is actually REAL????? Iconic. The last 10 minutes of that film really sealed the deal for me!
Rob K. i’m the same with Ma, i wanted a bigger body count she only really killed that one lady, not that i enjoy seeing death but she didn’t feel threatening at all
My Favorite Horror of the Year:
1. The Lighthouse (definitely not for everyone and I understand why you disliked it)
2. Midsommar
3. Us
4. Doctor Sleep
5. Ready or Not
My Least Favorite:
1. In the Tall Grass
2. Annabelle Comes Home
3. The Curse of La Llorona
Personally I thought Joker was fine, not really worth either the hype or controversy and generally kind of just middling and forgettable. You and Emma (SpookyAstronauts) definitely had the least toxic discussion of it though which was nice to see, even if I disagree on it. Glad some people could both love it and be civil and eloquent about it :)
Psycane La Llorona was laughably awful... it angers me it’s part of the Conjuring universe lol
@@talialghouls Yeah, it honestly woud have worked better as its own thing, and also if it leaned more on the psychological elements and the culture it originates from. I'd say ACH was worse just cause it was far more boring to me and trying way too hard to push for more spin-offs, but La Llorona is no winner.
Psycane I agree with your list except I loved joker
Joker is not even a horror film tho...
joker is not horror it’s a thriller-drama
I feel like the noise from you neighbors has become a sort of character in your videos, and I kind of look forward to it lol
I’m glad one of us does 😂
The Lighthouse is def my fav horror film from 2019. Willem Dafoe & Robert Pattinson just go above and beyond
That movie was crazy! I got slightly wasted watching it, but could still comprehended the plot. The acting is superb
I think my favorite horror film of 2019 was without a doubt Midsommar, I just saw it on Sunday night and it chilled me to my core, a beautiful nightmare that I couldn’t stop thinking about, it reminded me of being stoned at the park and not being able to find my car haha
Midsommar was probably the only film ever to literally leave me speechless leaving the theater for like 5 minutes. The ending is so cathartic it's utterly haunting
Mehd .B omg seriously like I had tears because I felt every single emotion of all the characters in that fire temple scene, it was just an otherworldly experience
@@KiranKlayPetrova That's the perfect way to describe the fire temple scene with the soundtrack and what's happening : "An otherworldly experience"
Mehd .B for real, it was so horrifying but satisfying at the same time, it was nice that Dani finally got her happy ending and some semblance of peace despite the terror
Same, love that movie
My favorite horror movie in 2019
1. Midsommar
2. Doctor sleep
3. Us
4. Ready or not
5. The lighthouse
Hooray 3/5 of my faves are here
Shocker. It's like choosing 5 favorite ice cream flavors out of the only 5 ice cream flavors
The Lighthouse was my favorite horror film of the year. But hey, respect for being honest about not liking it and not getting it. That's what I love about your channel. Always honest and unembarrassed about your opinions.
I enjoyed Scary Stories to tell in the dark it was so nostalgic for me.
Dafoes character represents proteus the sea god also known as “the old man of the sea” and Pattinson’s character is suppose to represent Prometheus. Prometheus stole the fire (light) from Zeus and was punished by being bound to a rock and having his insides eaten everyday by birds ( as we see in the final moments of the film)
You tell her !
I think understanding this is crucial to fully enjoying the film. I've seen it 3 times and become more enamored with every viewing. I understand why some people wouldn't like it, but I think her reasoning comes from not really "getting" the symbolism.
I’ve heard this theory, but I completely disagree and still love The Lighthouse, which I think is what makes it such a great movie. I see it more as a commentary on how people perceive themselves as doing more, harder work than others, while suspecting others of malicious intent. My favorite part was the “chased with an axe” scene, as that was when I realized there was really no way of knowing who chased whom; both believed the other had killed someone, as well as believing the other was a disrespectful, bad coworker. They were the same, but perceived the other as completely different.
I would also argue that The Lighthouse explores the same themes as The Shining (isolation and a sense of frustrated manhood leading to a break with reality), and would make the perhaps sacrilegious claim that The Lighthouse does it better (The Shining has better cinematography, but as far as storytelling goes, The Lighthouse blows it out of the water).
@@thrawncaedusl717 I think Robert Eggers referenced this in a talk about the movie so I guess the mythology did come into play with some of his intent and direction, but I like and agree with your take on the film, the axe scene was such a pivotal point.
Midsommar was definitely my favorite. It’s a movie that impacted me like any other. I actually experienced a panic attack the day after I saw it and then again in the theater the second time I watched it. My mom had just died in a brutal way about a month before I saw it and the grief that was portrayed by Dani fucked me up.
Thank you for all tour video reviews and also thank you for introducing me to the awesome streaming service shudder
The Lighthouse, Ready or Not and Midsommar were my favorite films of the year. Not even just in horror.
Most disappointing for me was probably just It Chapter 2. It had good moments but comapred to the first one it was a huge let down and just walked away unhappy.
I really enjoy watching your videos because (for the most part) we have wildly different taste in horror movies! I really love seeing your take on some movies I don’t like and seeing why you like them, it sometimes gives me a whole different perspective :)
Great reviews and interesting opinions. Have just found your channel and really appreciate your commentary! 😄
I'm fairly new to your channel and really like your videos and opinions. This video did not disappoint! Great job. Thank you.
a24 is amazing. hereditary, midsommar, the lighthouse, ah they’re all so good. i suggest you watch Under the Silver Lake, it’s so wild and out there. also Hot Summer Nights, which isn’t horror (neither is UTSL) but it’s still so beautiful. and of course Spring Breakers and Euphoria are so beautiful and shiny
I just discovered your channel, and it's amazing how i agree with everything you say and the critics you make to every movie. Great Taste ;)
Just found your channel looking forward to watching all your past and future reviews. Thanks for the promo code for Shudder I'll definitely put that to use 😁.
The Lighthouse is a film that captures the toxic masculinity found in men who cant vocalize their feelings for each other.
I don't get how The Lighthouse is considered pretentious but Joker is your favorite movie of the year. The Joker tries to be this challenging, intriguing take on mental illness, the role society takes in preventing these violent outbreaks but offers no real questions or answers. Joker feels more like a film trying to be a lot more serious and have a more pretentious message than the Lighthouse does. I mean the Lighthouse literally has fart jokes in it. Lol
Used your shudder code. Hadn't been on their site in about 2 years, their catalogue is great! But I really am trying it again because of the Creepshow series you suggested. Creepshow 1 and 2 are both some of my favorite movies of all time, and I didn't even know the series existed!
In other words, thank you! Glad I found your channel in the new year. Keep it up!
Just finished watching Haunt. If it wasn’t for your video, I may have never seen it, so thank you so much. And the same goes for The Ritual that I watched last night. So glad I found your channel 👍🏻🍿
You should watch and talk about Parasite (the Korean drama). Its an amazing thriller, horror, comedy.
Not horror at all
Yesssss I’ve been waiting for this!!
You are sooo enjoyable to watch!!!!! ❤️
Very interesting! Loved hearing your take!
But I have to say, i was triggered when you said Midsommar came out in June
While I absolutely agree on Pet Sematary being shit, the child actor who played Gage in the original was actually incredible imo (the daughter sucked though)
For me my personal favorite horror films were Scary Stories, Child's Play, Crawl, and Doctor Sleep (Doctor Sleep was the highlight of the horror this year IMO)
"No fair, daddy... No fair."
Congrats on the sponsorship! I've been thinking about getting shudder to be able to watch some stuff I haven't seen yet.
Edit: I know you said it's no bueno, but I'm starting Sweetheart now 😁
I'm gonna be honest, upon seeing Midsommar, I thought it was meandering and pretentious as all hell. Then I remembered Velvet Buzzsaw existed. Now I feel like I owe Midsommar an apology.
But Midsommar is still all of those things despite Velvet Buzzsaw being worse lol
To be pretentious it would have to e pretending at having meaning or intelligence and I really dont feel that it was pretending at having those things.
How does a movie even be pretentious? How is that possible?
To be fair, wasn't Velvet Buzzsaw about punishing the snobby, pretentious people of the art world?
Midsommar is overhyped and overrated IMO. Great cinematography, and a lot of cleverness went into crafting it, but it just didn’t work for me.
The lighthouse is one of the best movies ever made for me
Comment about lighthouse here! I'm sorry you didnt like it overall,. Personally what i like to take the most in the movie is principally the acting and the cinematography that alone made me enjoy so much the movie. The scene when Will was getting buried alive really hit me, i can't imagine how hard was to do two takes of that.
Gabriel S.R spoiler alert lol
I was SO excited to see you talk about Joker! It was my favorite movie of 2019 as well. Somehow I’m very happy you liked it hahah
Welcome to Child's Play fandom! We'll be your friend to the end. lol This is the first time Ive stumbled upon your channel and really enjoyed this video. Kudos for being able to fly through 20 movies so quick and sum up your thoughts well.
This IS the end, FRIEND!
I’ve been binge watching RedLetterMedia and Jenny Nicholson lately, and I guess the CZcams algorithm decided you were a perfect mix of the two! I’ve been loving the content since I stumbled on your channel the other day, keep up the great work! 👍
It's funny that Jenny has Joker as much as Sarah loves it.
@@neutralman9124 hates* but ya, I had a good laugh at that too :P
@@jdomed0880 Didn't notice the mistake, cheers. :-)
I love your videos so much!
And sidenote, I don't know how you survive with such loud neighbors! Is your building really cheaply constructed?
it must be 😂 they’re not loud at night so I don’t mind it too much. just difficult when I’m filming lol
I’m deceased that one of the cats is named Skimble, that’s legit my dream cat name
Midsommar is definitely my number 1 this year. It clicked with me on so many levels. And Ready or Not was SUCH A SURPRISE for me. I put it on the background while doing chores and you’ve guessed it - I didn’t do any of my house cleaning.
Such a good channel. Might get shudder soon
I also liked Midsommar more than Hereditary! You are not alone.
I love these videos!
My favourite horror movies/one of my favourite movies in general if the whole year was Midsommar! X
Joker was one of my favorites of the year, and I find it so weird that it's like a controversial thing to say.
And Velvet Buzzsaw made me so sad. I was so excited since Nightcrawler is one of my favorite movies, and Jake Gyllenhaal just makes great movies in my opinion.
It’s not controversial at all. It’s one of the biggest movies of 2019.
@@07foxmulder There's a very PC/Leftist crowd that despised it since they correlate it to incels, shootings and sympathy toward male aggressors. Controversial if you ever find yourself in their circles or friends with them. But all around, no. It definitely isn't since it's generally a favorite across the world.
Lighthouse was my favorite movie of the year. Pattinson has done some great indies.
I feel like Dr. Sleep was unnecessary and I hope the Outsider is good.
It is so interesting how some of your opinions literally mirror my thoughts and some opinions feel so alien to me. Just goes to show how horror fans are so different and how the different genres, tropes, vibes, and motifs you prefer can totally split a “community” apart lol.
Unrelated, I’m very excited to get to some of these I haven’t watched yet!!!
If I had to narrow it down to a top 5 and bottom 5 of the year...
Top 5:
-The Lighthouse
-Midsommar
-Little Monsters
-In the Tall Grass
-IT Chapter Two
Bottom 5:
-Jacob's Ladder
-Tone-Deaf
-The Influence
-A.M.I.
-The Haunting of Sharon Tate
So happy that you enjoyed Escape Room too! None of my friends did, I thought I was the only one lol.
"My neighbors would probably for sure die pretty quickly" 🤣👏🏻 Cracked me up
Great picks! I also loved It: Chapter 2, Midsommar, Scary Stories, Ready Or Not, Haunt, Child's Play Doctor Sleep, and Joker.
Oooo girl, have you seen Event Horizon?! If you like space horror, it is 10/10 👏👌 5 stars two thumbs up
Amazing, underrated and must see
I agree great movie!
Damn, The Lighthouse was my favorite movie of the year. 😂
Favorite Horror Movie List. 2019
1. The Lighthouse
2. Doctor Sleep
3. Midsommar
4. Ready or Not
5. US
Worst
1. Joker
I didn’t see a ton of horror movies this year so take my list with a grain of salt.
Yay! I’ve been waiting for this!
It’s crazy to me how Chris Stuckmann’s fave is your least fave! I love hearing how/why people love or hate movies
As a big fan of Stephen King's novels, I have to say that both The Shining and Doctor Sleep (the movies) were better than the books. Unpopular opinion I know. The Shining is my favorite movie of all time. Doctor Sleep was really good.
Very much agreed
I love you
I think my favorite thing about your videos is that you'll be talking about all these different movies and I'll 100% agree with every one of your reviews except for one. There's always that one where i just ask how?
Btw this vid it was The Lighthouse. That movie was amazing
We probably disagree in some cases ;)
My favorite Horror Movies of 2019 (German release date):
1. DOCTOR SLEEP
2. THE LIGHTHOUSE
3. THE WILD BOYS
4. MIDSOMMAR
5. US
6. THE DEAD DON'T DIE
7. LUZ
8. BRIGHTBURN
9. IT: CHAPTER 2
10. CRAWL
11. WOUNDS
12. KNIFE+HEART
13. ONE CUT OF THE DEAD
14. THE PERFECTION
15. CHILD'S PLAY
Totally agree! Doctor Sleep was probably my overall favorite movie of the year. I didn't expect much out of it at all but it blew me away!
I'm late. I just watched Doctor Sleep for the first time recently and I loved it!
would love a video of your chucky movies rankings and thoughts about each film!
Love the black blob in the background 😻💕
I went to see midsommar in the this one theater that is old and kind of creepy and because of all the drug scenes I didn't realize the projector was messed up until half way through the movie lol
I’m so proud of myself for watching almost all of the movies you named 🙌🏽 I avoided the bad ones by simply guessing from their trailers, which helped me save some bucks 😆
she did not just put the lighthouse in the worst category. that's a bit harsh, like it's not even in the okay category for her. yikes
She is a mainstream horror lover. She loves the production line stuff like Conjuring, The Nun, etc.
@@matgordon-smith1949 You do realize it is ok for people to not like something you do like right?
Beagslie76 didn’t say it wasn’t ok. Didn’t say what I like.
Just making a statement. Read the words next time.
@@Beagslie76 she has the perfection in the worst list, she likes mainstream horror
Just because thats her opinion, that doesnt automatically mean she's right that its an awful film
I loved The Perfection and Get Out. I hope Alison Williams continues to do horror movies/thrillers.
I didn’t expect to like The Escape Room as much as I did. I’m excited for the second one.
The comment about your neighbors not surviving the events of The Silence cracked me up. xD
My friend and I went to see Scary Stories.. and we couldn’t stop laughing because of the character reactions
I love your brutal honesty. You fully own your opinion unlike dr o many sugarcoated reviewers. Anyway, love your channel.
Loved Haunt! Def my #1 from 2019, Midsommar coming in second
Jenna Gill Haunt was so good. Did not expect it to be as brutal as it was
Joker was my favourite of the year as well, great video as always
I like your reviews and also you are very beautiful 😘❤️❤️
i would looove a top 10 shark movie list from you, i actually really liked 47 meters down uncaged fsr but i also just love anything related to diving lmao
I happened to love Velvet Buzzsaw and The Perfection; hated Joker; how could you leave off In The Tall Grass as THE Worst?
18:45 what was scientifically impossible? There are area's of the ocean with holes in them. They're called "blue holes" and there's a theory that they all connect together.
Rachael Anthony but blue holes are just sinkholes in the water, in this movie it has a black hole, that would destroy the Earth if it was real
I agree about the Lighthouse. I was PUMPED about the movie and there were parts I loved, but you’re right, I was waiting for the “that’s so weird, I love it!” moment and I didn’t get it
I'm so glad you mentioned Velvet Buzzsaw. I wanted to like that film so bad - a slasher film but set in an art gallery? A horror movie that parodies how we love art for the wrong reasons? It sounded right up my street and then it just... Didn't come together at all.
I must admit that I looked forward to seeing The Lighthouse. I liked that it was filmed in black and white and that there was no background music,we only got the sound of the sea and gulls. . . but when I left the cinema I had that feeling of WTF? I sat through that entire film for, well not a lot! A lot was promised but not much delivered.
Its never too late!! Plz do your comments on Joker, even its on since october, now its more “in the talking” because of the award season, and ofc the oscars!! So plz, if you included in your horror list... it must be on this channel💜😽
The four main horror films I can recall seeing are Us, Midsommar, It: Chapter 2, & Doctor Sleep (also listed in release order). Each one had me engaged and invested in their plots, and I especially commend the last three for not making me feel their lengthy runtimes. I don't mind watching a long movie, but I want it to keep me on board as much as an 80 or 90 minute movie would. If it slogs in the middle, I start recognize the runtime and I'm feeling the time pass by. But Midsommar, IC2, and DS held my attention even when the action slowed down a bit with followable characters and interesting story elements, which are both important to me, especially as an aspiring writer. I haven't seen Joker or The Lighthouse yet, and had no desire to see the Pet Semetary remake (and I'm glad I didn't).
Great video and great lists. I agree with IT Chapter Two, I loved it and will stand by it but it definitely was weaker than Chapter One.
Us had an interesting concept, but so badly executed because of the many plot holes...
Patricia Eliana right??? Like if they were eating the rabbits raw, how the hell did the rabbits get food? And how did Red assemble the tethered army with like no technology and how did they get the material to make all the red jumpsuits
I really enjoyed haunt! Its super underrated I never hear anyone speaking about it! Also joker was my favorite of the year as well, I was thinking about it for days after watching it. It was so well done I loved every minute.
I remembered wanting to come back and mention something you said about dark comedies so I had to go back and watch again. It was the Child's Play franchise that you referred to as such.
If you were born in the 90's or just discovered horror films later on in life as something you've come to enjoy your first experiences of franchises such as A Nightmare on Elm St. and Child's Play as dark comedies having first seen their later sequels as by that time they've been heavily watered down from the dark roots basically having become a joke of what they once were.
For instance if you look at the original you may understand why it was so frightening during that time and became an instant hit amongst fans. Then watch the later films like Bride and Seed of Chucky and see how they did a 180 with the franchise turning it into a slapstick comedy horror.
But coming from their original creator they were as serious, dark, and good along with the best of them.
gurl the lighthouse is incredible
adding haunt and headcount (ari aster can stop counting heads plz)
have you seen 1 cut of the dead (on shudder) and little monsters (hulu) both great comedy horror mixes from last year
You should do a Childsplay franchise ranking video! ❤️🔪
I’m gonna list my favorites/least favorites from this list too! -
My favorites : Midsommar, Us, IT Chapter Two, Escape Room, Scary Stories and Ma
My least favorites : Brightburn
Haven’t watched : Joker, Childs Play, Doctor Sleep, The Lighthouse, 47 Meters Down Untamed, Ready Or Not, Pet Sematary, Haunt/Headcount, Velvet Buzzsaw, The Haunting Of Sharon Tate, The Silence, The Perfection and Sweetheart
Maybe you should watch some movies.
Doctor sleep and trick were couple of my favorites from 2019
honestly i liked midsommar more than hereditary, but hereditary scared me more. as someone with severe allergies... i had to take a break during That Scene.
great video as always! ♡♡♡
i havent seen the lighthouse but im bummed you dont like it because our taste in horror is like,,,, identical and it was filmed where i live so i was excited! like one of my friends saw robert pattinson at starbucks while it was being filmed but on the flipside now im kinda excited to see if i also put it on my worst of 2019 list
2019 fav: freaks, I see you & ready or not.
BKE - Big Kitten Energy in this video! 😻
I'm with you on the liking Midsommar more than Hereditary. And oh man was The Dead Don't Die was a disappointment for me.
Is it a cat or a dog behind you? Nevermind ,he's sleeping so chuuuuuut ;)
Great Video !!!
Velvet buzsaw was soo good in my opinion not really as a horror movie but because of the videography. It was so gorgeously made and so interesting in an artistic way. And the perfection was great aswell cause the plot twist was so awsome I thought I was in it for the girl getting ill and then the turn bruuuh
we literally have the same favorites- good taste!
My absolute favorite horror movie of this year is Ready or Not. Escape Room, Happy Death Day 2U, US and Child's Play I also love.
My worst horror movies are: The Prodigy, Velvet Buzzsaw and MA.
In between are Crawl and Eli, which I generally liked. Then IT Chapter 2, Scary Stories to tell in the dark and Midsommar (which I was okay with mostly) and then you have Brightburn and Pet Sematary (which I was more 'meh' about).
My overall favorite movie of 2019 - besides horror, I mean - is, without a doubt, Parasite. Because I love that movie so damn much and I see some kind of correlation between my favorites because they all use this dark humor.
I don't have a top 10 list cause while I liked some of the films released this year I just wasn't crazy about them. But I would say that my top movies are
1)Doctor Sleep-it made me appreciate life more.
2) It Chapter 2- it impacted me way more than I expected. The cast was great and some of the scares really got me.
3)Climax-Great soundtrack, cinematography and disturbing plot. I loved it!
4) Escape Room-I don't know about y'all I was "clutching my pearls" throughout this movie. It was tense, fun and had great set design.
5) Us- took me a while to appreciate it, but I've come around to really liking it.
6)The Perfection- maybe it's because I'm gay or something BUT holy cow this movie was so good. I love a crazy and twisted tale of lesbianism. It's the closest Americans would ever come to making a South Korean style thriller.
Now for the worst I'll say:
1)Crawl-boring,predictable and horrendously written
2)The Curse of La Liorona(or however its spelled)-rotten hot garbage bottom of the barrel junk
3)Bird Box-dumb and poorly written, acted, and generally poor filmmaking.
That's it 😀
Bird box was in 2019 I-
@@debourahthorsell1939 I know right. The shock of the century. I've never seen a film get so popular and yet so quickly forgotten.
(My)Best:
Us
It
Tall Grass
The Prodigy
Tone Deaf
The Perfection
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile
Crawl
The Wind
Joker
Ready or Not
What We Do in the Shadows (2019 series)
Now that I think about it, I didn't see many horror movies this year. Last year there was more to watch, maybe? I've probs missed a few.
Agree, "Ready or Not" was fantastic. Went in a different direction from what I was expecting. BTW have you seen "The Dark"?
