Fun Fact for you, Jayy:
The laboratory set used in this movie was the original set that was in the movie "Frankenstein"
The lab equipment is definitely from the original. Kenneth Strickfaden, who designed and built it all for the 1931, still had it all in his garage when Mel Brooks tracked him down.
Growing up with only a handful of channels, this was always a treat when a network showed this as a Saturday night movie.
I don’t think you got the gag when Frankenstein asked Igor to help with the bags. Igor replied “you take the blonde and I’ll take the one in the turban.” A “bag” is an outdated and negative euphemism for a woman.
Madeline Kahn was also in Blazing Saddles. She plays Elizabeth in this movie, but in Blazing Saddles she was Lily Von Schtuup. Liam Dunn, who played the preacher in Blazing Saddles played the Laboratory volunteer who gets kneed in the groin in this. One fun fact to know. The student who keeps annoying Dr. Fronkensteen in the lab went on to play the voice of Brainy Smurf in the '80's cartoon show. His name is Danny Goldman.
I thought the reason the horses got upset when someone mentioned the name Frau Blucher was because Blucher sounded like the German word for glue. But that was just an Urban legend, so I guess we'll never know why they did that, unless Mel Brooks just thought it would be funny for some reason.
When you hear the cat scream when Dr. Fronkensteen (Hey, I'm just going along with it) throws the dart. That's actually Mel Brooks you hear. I think he was also the one sounding like the wolf when they were on their way to the castle.
The band Aerosmith took the title of their song "Walk This Way" from a scene in this movie. The "Walk This Way" line is also featured in "History of the World: Part One" and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights"
Mel Brooks trademark: A character says something unintelligible and someone or a group of people answers, "What?!" or "What did he say?!" This happens in "Young Frankenstein"; "Blazing Saddles"; :History of the World: Part One" and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights".
1. Mr. Hilltop/Liam Dunn is the same guy that plays the preacher in Blazing Saddles
2. I first saw this at a drive-in (that's still here BTW) and there was a lunar eclipse over the screen that made it even cooler than it was.
3. The studio wanted this in color but Brooks and Wilder insisted black and white because they wanted the old school tone.
4. This movie is Wilder's baby, and he agreed to do Blazing Saddles only if Brooks would direct and help write this movie.
5. It was almost impossible to get through the "You take the blonde and I'll take the one in the turban" scene. Everyone kept cracking up. You can see Wider trying not to laugh.
6. Igor's hump changing sides was Feldman's running gag on the cast and it was kept in the movie.
7. Marty Feldman's walleyed orbs were the result of both a hyperactive thyroid and a botched operation after a car accident before his 30th birthday, in 1963.
8. FUN FACT: Igor's "Walk this way" was Steven Tyler's inspiration for hit song of the same name.
9. Wilder😇 also insisted that Brooks NOT be seen on film. However, the screeching cat and the wolf are Mel.
10. Light reflecting off of the monster's missing teeth is not a goof. It's on purpose.
11. Monical over an eye patch.🤣
12. "Puttin' on the Ritz" will never be the same again.
I've seen this movie a bunch of times, and I just realized who that old man is.
The blind hermit that The Monster visited was a young Gene Hackman--
He played the old paranoid retired agent in Enemy of the State with Will Smith..
Matter of fact: Gene Hackman played this hermit character uncredited
@@karlsmith2570 wow, I never knew that! I just recognized him...
So glad you came around to watching this movie, especially during this time of year.
Mel Brooks once said out of all the movies he directed, Young Frankenstein is the one he's most proud of...and rightly so.
Marty was at his best in this movie, hands down his funniest performance
The Monster was played by Peter Boyle, who is probably best known as Frank Barone in TV's "Everybody Loves Raymond."
The silver streak in Elizabeth's hair is a reference to the old movie "The Bride of Frankenstein."
Many of the characters, sets, situations and catch phrases were taken from the original Frankenstein movies.
Being filmed in black and white added to the texture and feel of the originals. Horror films in color are not the same. A shout out for Marty Feldman who played Igor.
Another hysterical movie with Madeline Kahn in it is WHATS UP DOC!! You’ll love it!
Igor, or EYE-gor was played by Marty Feldman. His unusual appearance was caused by Graves' disease, now called Thyroid Eye Disease and a botched operation following a car accident before his thirtieth birthday. It definitely hasn't hurt his career. In fact, in later years he has described his appearance as a factor in his success. This is a quote from him, from Wikipedia:
"If I aspired to be Robert Redford, I'd have my eyes straightened and my nose fixed and end up like every other lousy actor with two lines on "Kojak". But this way. I'm a novelty".
So, had not only accepted his unique appearance, he embraced it.
The original Frankenstein movie 1931 was the second talking horror picture made. First was Dracula 1930. The sequel was Bride of Frankenstein 1932 I believe. The third sequel Son of Frankenstein 1938. You have to have seen them to get half of the jokes. This movie is a homage to the originals. You really need to watch them they still hold up. GOD BLESS ALL HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great advice. There's no better time for her than Halloween to check out these classics. Turner Classic Movies channel usually airs these this time of year, too!
It's a joy watching people from the younger generation watching this movie for the first time.
A young Terri Gar. Meeeeeeeeeeow
Another good October (Hallowe'en) movie: Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) with Cary Grant & Priscilla Lane.
I agree, one of my favorite movies. It is well worth the watch, Gary Grant is hilarious.
When my BF sometimes complains that I hug too hard, my usual response is 'Taffeta, darling...'
Great reaction. Just found your channel. YF is one of my old favorites. The Inspector Kemp character was based on a similar character in Son of Frankenstein, who had such a thick Bavarian accent you could hardly understand him, as well as a prosthetic arm. Kenneth Mars played that arm hilariously in this film. oh, and that's Peter Boyle (the grandfather in Everybody Loves Raymond) as the Monster.
I think Mel Brooks is the most comical genius in the history of funny stuff.
Wonky-eyed Marty Feldman/Igor had his eyes insured with Lloyd's of London, in case they ever straightened out. Quite the ladies man, in his day.
Madeline khan was a trained opera singer.
You'll have seen History of the World Part 1? You should, if you haven't.
You’ve gotta check out “ The Birdcage”. Promise, you’ll LOVE it. It’s hilarious
I don't think Mel Brooks was in this movie, I could be wrong, but the monster was played, don't remember his name, but he was in the 1990's comedy, Everybody loves Raymond.
On Gene Wilder’s insistence, Mel Brooks was not to appear in the movie. However, Mel provided the wolf howl and the cat screech. So he was still _sort of_ in the movie. 😄
Peter Boyle is the name you’re looking for.
Mel Brooks had a troupe of "regulars" he made films with. Gene Wilder was one who turned up fairly often. Harvey Korman and Cloris Leachman were others. "High Anxiety" was hliarious, but the king of Mel Brooks movies is "History of the World Pt. 1". I know people like "Blazing Saddles" best, but they're wrong. Check 'em out!
Two other Mel Brooks movies appropriate for Halloween are High Anxiety and Dracula Dead and Loving it. The Producers with Gene Wilder was Mel Brooks' first movie.
Surprised you didn't laugh harder at the Monster singing? To me that's the funniest scene in movie history.
Love this movie 😂
I see why
I remember the advertisements for the movie. They proudly proclaimed that it was nominated for zero academy awards. A couple movies that I saw back in the '70s, in which Mel Brooks played the main character, were Silent Movie, which also included Marty Feldman (Eye-gor), and a wonderful spoof of Hitchcock movies, High Anxiety.
Yeah and all the stars playing themselves in Silent movie.
All from Burt Reynolds to Liza Minnelli.
Sad that nobody react to it.
One of my faves of all time❤❤
First time I saw this, the theater was packed. I had to sit way in the back in the balcony and the laughter was so loud I missed a lot of jokes. Glad you liked it ❤
That’s the drawback to movies that are this funny, but it’s also a good sign.

Your got nothing to worry about there, Jayy
"Young Frankenstein" is more of a comedy than a scary movie
I saw at the theater when I was 12. First movie I spent my own money to see twice. No Mel in this one . Mel & Gene co wrote the movie. Gene had to fight for the dance number !
TBH… Before ever watching this comedic homage, one should have seen (At very least) the three Universal Frankenstein flicks, that starred Karloff, as “The Monster”!
Several parodied scenes (& the laboratory equipment) were taken right from those amazing flicks!
Enjoy!
My first real date ever was to see this movie when it was released.

" I Can't Tell If That's Mel Brooks Or Not"
That's not Mel Brooks as Igor, that's Marty Feldman
Mel does appear in a cameo appearance though
Only of the cat and wolf sounds
No I thought the Frankenstein was lol
@@watchwithjayy No, the Frankenstein monster was played by Peter Boyle.
Mel Brooks played the father of the little girl
I'm just getting ready to watch this reaction, and plan on watching the full reaction over the weekend (Have a few to catch up on, over at Patreon). I just wanted to comment regarding getting into the horror genre for someone not really into horror movies ~ I recommend starting off with the classic Universal movies from the 30's & 40's. They are excellent movies that were very well made, while being relatively tame by modern standards. Way more suspense/thrillers than horror/slashers.
Besides, it really helps when getting into the parodies knowing the source material. Thus, Dracula with Bela Lugosi, Frankenstein with Boris Karloff, and the Wolfman with Lon Chaney Jr. ~ which will then set you up for a fun Halloween movie ~ Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein
From there you can build upon with the sequels to those movies, plus throw in some additional movies, such as The Mummy with Boris Karloff..... then graduate to movies of the 1950's & 1960's ~ Vincent Price made his reputation throughout the decades..... plus Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Essentially, if you work your way up from when the movie industry was heavily regulated through each decade as directors pushed the envelope in terms of what kind of gore they actually were able to put on screen, it's not so bad.
Not everyone was taken to the drive-in to see the Exorcist at the age of 2 by their parents like I was (They swear I was asleep in the back seat..... but my absolute love of the horror genre says otherwise!), so I don't expect everyone to be as desensitized as I and other horror lovers are when it comes to these movies.
Short answer, don't just dive into the scariest of movies from the very first. Work your way into it. In terms of your August 27 poll ~ although I voted The Shining (before knowing that you're pretty new to horror), I'd probably vote Psycho instead..... as it's a little more subtle and tame in comparison. (In fact, I actually did just change my vote on the poll).
If introduced and progressed properly, you may very well become a huge fan of horror movies (I know a few reactors who started off hating horror who are now horror junkies).
A comedy classic 👏
Watch original Frankenstein
I have never seen anyone not watch this movie and laugh less than you.
Great job very funny Loved it Jayy
Just found your channel and got my perspiration to it
Igor was British comedian Marty Feldman, not Mel Brooks. Feldman was so funny, and overcame some medical and physical issues, using them to his advantage. For me, he absolutely ran away with this movie.
Madeline Kahn was Lili in "Blazing Saddles", another funny, funny comedian who left us too young.
Wonderful reaction
No mel brooks wasn't in this one!! Mel Brooks obviously really liked the original Frankenstein film as his story line quite paralleled it! That was probably why he wasn't in it himself as there was already enough raw material to work with!!!
Actually, Mel Brooks does make a cameo appearance in "Young Frankenstein"
He appears as the father of the little girl that Peter Boyle's character meets up with
Brooks makes the cat sound off-screen while they're playing darts. He also ruined the first take of Elizabeth arriving at the castle because he didn't know that Marty Feldman was going to imitate Groucho Marx on the line "You take the blonde, and I'll take the one in the turban" and burst out laughing. They barely got that scene done; you can clearly see and hear Gene Wilder corpsing when he tells Igor to "stop it."
mmmm STOP🤣🤣
This is one of the few movies that Mel Brookes has made that he doesn’t have a cameo in. I have heard a couple of different reasons why but nothing for sure. You will see several people in this movie that are also in Blazing Saddles because the two movies were made back to back and both released in 1974. I have only seen one of the Mel Brookes movies I didn’t like so I would say that you can’t really go wrong with his movies, but I think you should watch “Robin Hood Men In Tights” next. Also, my personal opinion, comedies are not meant to be watched alone. You should find someone to share the experience with. Again, this is just my opinion.
I've read that the film was Wilder's idea and part of a deal to replace the first Waco Kid actor who showed up drunk. Wilder agreed to come in for the part if Mel would do his Young Frankenstein script, but only on the condition that Brooks would not appear in the movie. Brooks sort of cheated...he provided the sound effects for the wolf's howl and the cat's screech during the dart game. And my recommendation for the next Brooks film would be his first, with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, called The Producers...also without a Brooks appearance, save for voicing one memorable line for the film.
Everyone should watch the original before watching this.
❤❤❤
What a joke? Ye, of course. It’s a comedy.
It’s just a phrase I say a lot when something is funny or silly
