The gag about Igor's moving hump was a practical joke by Marty Feldman. He kept switching the hump to see how long it would take someone to notice. When they finally did, Brooks thought it was so funny that they made it a plot point.

"Inspector Kemp" is a parody of "Inspector Krogh", a character in "Son of Frankenstein" (1939). Krogh also had a prosthetic arm, his real one having been ripped from his body by the monster. He also wore a monocle though without an eye-patch beneath it.
The blind man with the cabin in the woods (Gene Hackman) was a character from "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935)

In the original book by Mary Shelley the monster found the little girl putting flowers in the water. She says something like "pretty things belong in the water". The monster misunderstands and puts her in the water, accidentally drowning her. Which is why it's funny when this little girl runs out of flowers and asks "what shall we put in the water now?".

    To answer your question...
Frankenstein's fiance was never in love with him. She was actually repulsed intimately with him. That's why she came up with every excuse she could when he tried to touch her or kiss her. She's so repulsed that she wouldn't even allow his kiss to be blown at her at the train station. It took her being taken by the creature to become the person you see in the end.

Gene Wilder did such a good job in this film and his performance of Dr. Frankenstein is his best performance. He also, of course, played Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp's performance bugged me to no end) but there are so many other great Gene Wilder movies to watch. He retired from acting to focus on his writing in either 2004 or 2005. The best movies he did were with Richard Pryor, such as "Stir Crazy" (my favorite which was actually directed by Sidney Poitier) and "Silver Streak". The two of them co-starred in the very funny 1989 comedy "See No Evil, Hear No Evil" in which Wilder plays a deaf man and Pryor plays a blind man who get charged with murder and are on the run. They both are so funny together. I loved it and recommend it to anyone who needs a good laugh.

Great reaction (my first time seeing you). I like how you tried to make it more spoiler free as far as the joke punch lines went. (I saw this film in original release and have had VHS, laserdisc and DVD copies so can basically quote it scene for scene.)
Now, as far as this film, it parodies the first four Universal Studios Frankenstein films: Frankenstein (1931), Bride Of Frankenstein (1935), Son Of Frankenstein (1939) and Ghost of Frankenstein (1942). Briefly the original 1931 film is reflected in the overall premise, the use of the original Kenneth Strickfaden lab equipment found in his garage (the equipment, not Kenneth!), and the ALIVE scene. Bride of Frankenstein gave us Madeline Kahn's slivery hairdo, her hissing at the creature, the blind hermit (Gene Hackman) and the emphasis on the creature's love of music. Son of Frankenstein introduced Ygor (played by Bela Lugosi) who also played a horn like the one shown, often from atop the castle. It also gave us Inspector Kemp with the wooden arm. In Son Of the inspector was Krough and revealed his arm was torn out by the creature. There was also a dart game between them. In Ghost of Frankenstein Ygor is again present and tricked his way into getting a transference of his intellect into the creature's body More similarities exist but this is way too long as it is!

  • @GranpaMike
    @GranpaMike Před rokem +6

I've loved this [and many other Mel Brooks films] since I first watched it back in the '70s. Such a superb cast. You can also see Madeline Kahn and Gene Wilder together in Mel Brooks' "BLAZING SADDLES" (1974). Miss Madeline's performance in Mel Brooks' "HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART I" (1981) was also fabulous. As for the personality transformation of Madeline's character, it undoubtedly had something to do with the monster's "enormous Schwanzstücke". Dinner conversations often move in strange and unexpected directions. ;)

    1. Mr. Hilltop/Liam Dunn is the same guy that plays the preacher in Blazing Saddles
    2. I first saw this at a drive-in (that's still here BTW) and there was a lunar eclipse over the screen that made it even cooler than it was.
    3. The studio wanted this in color but Brooks and Wilder insisted black and white because they wanted the old school tone.
    4. Wilder agreed to do Blazing Saddles only if Brooks would direct and help write this movie.
    5. It was almost impossible to get through the "You take the blonde and I'll take the one in the turban" scene. Everyone kept cracking up. You can see Wider trying not to laugh.
    6. Igor's hump changing sides was Feldman's running gag on the cast and it was kept in the movie.
    7. Marty Feldman's walleyed orbs were the result of both a hyperactive thyroid and a botched operation after a car accident before his 30th birthday, in 1963.
    8. FUN FACT: Igor's "Walk this way" was Steven Tyler's inspiration for hit song of the same name.
    9. Wilder(RIP) also insisted that Brooks NOT be seen on film. However, the screeching cat and the wolf are Mel.
    10. Light reflecting off of the monster's missing teeth is not a goof. It's on purpose.
    11.Monical over an eye patch.🤣

One of my fave films and fave film-going experiences. I was 7 when it was released and a huge horror film fan - my dad took me to a Saturday matinee and the line was blocks around the blocks long (!) It was the only film I saw that had pre-show cartoons and a Three Stooges short like they used to have way back in the day (that was the norm) and we both loved it and laughed our asses off. Mel Brooks' valentine to the Universal horror films is still his greatest film overall - all the jokes hit their marks and the production values are astounding (the gorgeous black and white cinematography and fun fact - the lab equipment is all from the 1931 original FRANKENSTEIN FILM ; it was in a film collector's garage in California and Brooks even gave the gent a credit in the opening credits). A fantastic cast led by the manic Gene Wilder is impeccable. RE: Madeline Kahn's Elizabeth - she's pretty much a Park Avenue virgin and when the monster ravishes her it's a true blue sexual awakening for her no doubt. Glad you finally got to this - I also recommend ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN.

Why did the monster look like he wanted to throw the girl in? The horror film this parodies, the same scene transpires where the monster and the little girl throw petals, and when there are no more left the monster gets confused and throws the girl in, drowning her. The girl's death is discovered and leads to the townspeople hunting the monster.
A lot of jokes in this movie really depend on you having seen the old Universal monster films first, particularly Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein.

Before starting, I really, really hope that you've already seen the first 3 movies from the 1930s, or at least the first two, since this film heavily parodies both of those movies plus a little of the third. Fingers crossed! Okay, here goes. . .

Another great reaction. Marty Feldman was a comedy genius. We lost him way too soon.
Comedic horror movies have been around for quite a while, and Young Frankenstein is one of the best. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is well worth seeing. It features one of the funniest comedy teams ever and the original Universal Studios ' Dracula (Bela Lugosi) and the Wolf Man aka Larry Talbott (Lon Chaney, Jr.). Boris Karloff sat this one out, so Glenn Strange tkes over as Frankenstein's creature.
Roman Polanski 's Fearless Vampire Killers is also hilarious. Yes, that Roman Polanski, but I try to look past what he did and enjoy the film. He directed and stars in this film along with his future wife, Sharon Tate. She was the actress that was murdered by the Charles Manson Family.
Love At First Bite is also excellent. You have George Hamilton as Dracula, Susan Saint James, Richard Benjamin as Van Helsing, and an unforgettable Arte Johnson as Renfield. It's set in the disco '70s.
Monster Squad is also well worth a watch. Bye.

Glenn Miller to be exact. Song title "Pennsylvania 6-5000"
      czcams.com/video/m_muFwwTSMs/video.html
Glenn Miller had as many hits in the top 100 as The Beatles AND Elvis combined, and he did it in just three years before his untimely death during WWII, not over their whole life's work. Talk about popular...Amazing!
