Growing plants in pots or in the ground? Which is better

  • In this video I show you the significant root growth you can expect from plants grown in the ground - they receive a consistent supply of water and nutrients that allows them to mature earlier in the summer and potentially set viable seed.
My subject is the spectacular Snail Vine, Corkscrew Vine or to use is proper name Cochliasanthus Caracalla. This choice tender vine is not hardy in my location; if I leave it outside in the winter it will die. It is such a good performer when planted in the ground that it is worth digging up before first frosts and moving to a warmer winter location, ideally a greenhouse or window sill.
Next spring this substantial plant will be planted outside in May where it can thrive, flower earlier and share its great fragrance for a longer period of time. It's well worth the effort.

I have 3 seedlings. Do NOT want to dig up a giant plant. Will try a 5 gallon, self-watering planter.

Which zone are you growing in and where do you store your potted up vine over the winter? Thank you for your video :)

I live in Connecticut near the Rhode Island boarder. Zone 6b. Some plants have been overwintered in my frost free greenhouse, and some go into my basement with artificial lights. Thank you for watching
