I would give anything to understand the mind of poor training partners. Like what percentage of them are doing it on purpose?
This is timely. I feel like I've been a bad pad holder. 😭 I didn't realize it until like last week really. My original gym we did some pad work but it was mostly back and forth sparring. This new gym I go to and have been at for like 3 months, we do a lot of pad work. The basics are mostly easy. I realize it's the speed and just casually blanking on what hand goes where. Last week I just now realized it's basically the same drill we are working on in class. Same arm side and everything. Now that I realized that, I've been practicing it for a few days just at home and when I'm sitting around I'll shadow pad hold if that makes sense. Hoping to get better because two of my last classes I actually felt bad for the person punching and kicking.
I hate sparring big beginners because they almost ALWAYS feel "attacked". They're so scared to get touched so they go hard and stiff to avoid any attack to their self view. Like chill bro we're just playing
Bad sparring partners get liver shots until they stop or fall.
Preach 👏👏👏
I use livers shots all the time and I occasionally use sweeps or throws whenever I’m working with a bad sparring partner 🙏🏻
You're absolutely right. I've sparred a few people and they were trying to hurt me the entire time. It's like what the hell, bro? We're both trying to learn and no one cares who wins. Calm down.
Woah thanks! This was needed cuz everyone in my boxing gym goes literally 100% even while doing drills and bery light touching. Even though the coach tells us to go slow and not hit hard. Even though I've told them beforehand "let's use jist 20% power" they say no and go hard. 😢😢
It's a shame when training partners can't slow down. Sometimes a slower pace is so much more beneficial.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial exactly, our coach tells us to reduce the power drastically and focus more on punching form. Still the students don't listen
Honestly, just go to another gym bro. You're gonna grow faster if your sparring partners let you practice your stuff without them trying reconfigure your nose.
@kevinhart46instructions unclear now in custody 😂
The bad pad holder is so relatable haha
There was this big 220lb guy from the army that came in with a bad attitude swinging like a madman in sparring.
My gym usually light spars unless its for a fight camp, so that was a big no no. Dude was getting worked by our featherweights lmaoo
My biggest point of annoyance in the clinch is when someone is doing literally everything in their power to avoid the clinch.
Like, the second I have a single arm in, the immediately long-guard and take five steps back.
plus watch out for people who do soft jabs then full power crosses. + use hand pads with finger cover , so you dont get your fingers snapped by inaccurate power punchers, + your more likely to be accidently injured by a beginner than someone with skill ie groin kick ,glove thumb in the eye, leg kick to knee joint etc etc etc :)+ thanx for your great channel Gabriel .Sharing your hard earned knowledge so freely and increasing all your subscribers fight IQ.👍
I was sparring last week. Guy kept doing the same thing, jumping in and throwing a left hook, trying to knock my head off. After explaining that I don’t want to get knocked out and if he could go a bit lighter his excuse was that because I’m tall he has to get in close, so I said “there’s no need to go so hard though”. At the end he said I wasn’t going hard so don’t say that, to which I replied “you was but it’s done now so just leave it at that”. Then he started to follow me round the gym calling me a disrespectful c***, telling me to go outside and fight him 😂 I was so confused. Then the head coach came and said if you guys want to fight, we can get everyone off the mat and you guys fight until someone gives up, I said “Yh ok let’s go” and the guy continued I say let’s go outside. Still don’t understand what his obsession is with “outside” 😂
Sounds like a wanker, exactly the kind of people you don’t want to spar with
Bad coach. If you don’t want to go hard the coach shouldn’t offer a fight.
It's important to keep a humble attitude. Remember the best guy in the gym will always has to train with less skilled partners, but they're still able to learn.
Appreciate the daily videos, I try to watch them when I can.
They really help out, thank you very much.
Man I love your channel so much, such a variety of tips and advice. I’m pretty new with training.. around 3 months at the moment but soaking up all the tips and actively trying to learn as much as I can. Thank you again and keep it up!
I have literally been dealing with this, and was going to ask you! Perfect timing
I was that rigid guy for the first year and a half of training. I’ve finally learned to relax a little 😂
This is why grappling is so useful in general, its the best way to de-escalate most situations against moronic hot heads. You just pin them down until they calm tf up & nobody gets hurt. Works for the police, works in sparrying,, can work on the streets in self defense as well. Its important to learn to wrestle.
Great tips to make the best of rough situations. Thanks!
Gabriel, this is amazing, my brain cells thank you. Much respect.
I'd add in Hygiene and Egos, great vid!
It's a good video and very important topic that not much people cover
I have trained muay thai for 3 years now 19yo also went to thailand to train [weird flex] In my gym its 50% good partners that have respect and 50% those who do random hard punches and get very exhausted when light sparring and just try too hard. Also there is 1 day of the week where we do hard sparring but they just do it all week not being able to control it. I hated the gym but its the only one near me 😅
Not to mention after 3 years i had no figting uppertunity while i was in thailand 2 weeks in and they asked if i wanted to try fighting.
And did you fight?
@@antoniovella7756 Unfortunately no as it would have been after my vacation. Had to leave 3 days before it and it was in hua hin btw🙏 truly a missed opportunity
Thanks for this ❤️
When someone is just going hard and doesn’t respect you at all can you just teep them really hard to back off 😊
Great clinch tip.
I've only had one person with negative energy in a year of training. One trying to break your guard during drilling or treating drilling like it's sparring. We're helping each other here now. I rather not fight fire with fire and just avoid them... They've not changed post 6 months watching them from a distance.
We have this one guy at our gym whos 50pounds heavier than me and he always goes 100%... Sparring turns to survival against him.
I would love to see a video about how to balance gym and kickboxing and how many time per week we must train each of them or mix them... thanks
In my boxing class there is a dude that always goes hard doing drills. I always feel tempted to highkick him
Do it!!!! Just do it!!!!
Do it he deserves it
I have had a few of those.. When I spar I keep my hands slightly open so they get the flap of the boxing glove. You know you hit them, they know they have been hit but it doesn't hurt them. However, it does take a bit of experience. The trick is not to retaliate if you get walloped.
I especially need this: my eyes are horrible and my optometrist stated that I have a 10x chance of getting retinal detachment. I'm honestly thinking of giving up boxing, even "light sparring"
Cool wallet 💯
I had a sparring session, 3 weeks ago, when we sparred, I exploited his game every time, but when I hit him, he literally went swinging shots, getting more angry, I felt like he wanted to break me into parts, and no matter how many times I hit him, he starts going forward, and forwards, I am like, I wanna have a good, solid sparring session, to learn something amazing, like to go 70-80%, so thank you so much for making this video, I am hoping this will help, keep up the great content!
Big thanks to Ridge for sending me this wallet and supporting the channel! Here’s the site if you want to check them out! ridge.com/varga10 & use code "varga10"
I’m so glad I found you today, I was looking for some self defense for us women. I have never even been in a fight but now days I want to be prepared. Can you make one and I can share with all my friends. Wife, mother and nurse and now want to be a tougher one
If youre endangered its best to run away
Well that would be my first thought but sometimes that isn’t an option.
But you can't really learn fighting or self-defense off the internet. You have to go train at a gym. There is no other way.
Okay
Bad sparring partners. So frustrating!
Hard when I'm working with uni kids in a muay thai society
Man Varga really hates when people are rigid 🤣
The worst time was when I pulled a head kick that would have landed flush only for him to try to dump me and press forward with a barrage of punches. Afterwards he was like “oh when you kicked me in the head there wasn’t any power” like NO SHIT bro.
Its very hard to find a good pad holder .
Last night I was training clinch with some guy, our coach was encouraging fighters with elbow pads to use elbows but I wasn’t wearing any and wasn’t wearing a mouth guard, but this dude was still throwing elbows at my head. Is this bad training etiquette? I was really pissed but trying to laugh it off
Only if he as throwing hard elbows to the head. Did you forewarn him you had no mouth guard??
I’d just start tearing with a puppy dog face while not breaking eye contact.
Out with a bruised rib now after my first sparring session with someone 40-50lbs heavier smh
I just won't spare if it's obvious the guy lacks control I don't have the skill level to guarantee they won't injury me and I am to old to play that game. I just want yo train to keep some skill up not be a champ.
Yeah I had a coach who always had the advanced people work with the noobs, it was fucking awful.
what if you're THE bad training partner xD
clown
I am 37 and I am already at a point where I practice alone (I have been doing it since I was 7 years old) when I was younger I could spar with friends but nowadays everyone is committed to their combat sport and they are not interested in sharing the techniques of their art (exchange to learn). It happens to me. Greetings, Maestro Varga.
:( no entries for Canadians, even thought you're Canadian? Sad face.
Noobs always think they're doing poorly if go light. They just don't understand that you're not trying to knock the other dude out.
