Did you get the clay from Tullahoma hobby lobby??
Murfreesboro
You should try 45 Colt out of the judge
Those smaller rounds, 17hmr and the 22mag devastated compared to the damage then the 5.7 did looks like explosive 💩💩 great video brother 🇺🇲💯
@@gunningdownadream9861 I think the difference is the 17hmr, 22mag, and even the 22LR all dumped their entire energy into the block. The 5.7x28mm didn't slow down as much and continued on through to finish dumping its energy in the dirt behind.
Yeah but that’s domestic clay, wild clay reacts differently when shot and typically runs faster in its natural habitat.
True, but it's a lot more gamey.
And a lot tougher when you eat it.
No clay was harmed in the production of this video.
Tho they did kill a few.🤨
The .22Mag is a very underrated cartridge. I absolutely love it!
No butterflies were harmed during the making of this film!🤠👍 I love the rimfires.
Have you ever tried the cci 17 game points or the fmj?
I think i may have some
One of my favorite guns is the little S&W 15-22 that I bought for my grandson. With the current ammo shortage, I've been shooting a lot of 22lr.
The 5.7 wasn’t weaker it was just much faster so it blew right through without losing as much energy
Someone understands
@@josephatherley he think’s he does lol
Not the speed. A faster bullet of the same weight will displace the clay faster regardless of what cartridge it's fired from. It has more to do with bullet weight and construction.
@@wirebrush dead on
wirebrush but if it’s going so fast it doesn’t have time to expand, the wound cavity won’t be near as big as one that does expand.
Now that was a interesting video and I always say never underestimate the power of a 22LR.
💪💪
But the 22Lee is so small and cute!
Even that butterfly is impressed with the .22 mag.
One of the most handy calibers I've used is the 22 mag. I have made friends in the ranching community thinning out the varmints. Yotes, fox , and bobcats are easy prey. About the only animal in Texas that I have not killed with the 22 mag are Hogs. I could easily survive with a little scoped, bolt action 22 mag. Anytime I'm on a ranch road there is always a 22 mag in my truck.
I agree. only have a bolt. looking at getting a semi. Think they have a cz 512 in 22 mag. may be my next gun what ever model it is
Some alligator trappers use it to dispatch gators caught on a line.
I have shot domestic pigs at butcher time with my 22 magnum. They were just shy of 300 lbs. Dropped like a rock.
I have a Savage 4M with 24" barrel I bought in the late 70's. Gave 40 bucks for it. It will never go away from me.
I love the round. A person can get really good performance from the round in a rifle. My single six is a perfect pistol for 22 mag and that gun with it's six inch barrel still gets some good power from that round and she pops a five inch fire ball out the end which is always fun.
Use what you have. I have a 308.
I have not yet ran into something I couldn't kill with it. Use the right bullets for the job and it's all good .
Thanks for the 17 hmr being included. Not many poeple have done good video's on it. It's a wicked little round.
I love em all!!!
Yup, .17 HMR is wicked and easily good to 100+ yards.
@@MrJdebest you spelled 165yrds flat wrong. I zero to 75yrds and I’m point blank 2.75” out that far. Good enough for anything bigger then a squirrel if you do your part. (Unless you have a head shot don’t shoot coyotes though, it will definitely kill, but placement is very important to be humane).
For bigger I go with the .22-250 also ball ammo because speed not size or shape is what’s doing 99% of the work.
@@john-paulsilke893 The .22-250 kicks you off the sight picture. Meaning that you can't see if you hit that gopher at 300 yards. It is an awesome cartridge.
Most people dont realize how deadly the 17 and 22 mag are I've got all the big guns now I think I need a 17. Great video. Semper-fi brother
👍👍🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Great for varmint, pita as far as cleaning gear goes imo.
17 hmr is used for Prairie Dogs and Gophers. The result is what you see in your clay demonstration. I absolutely love mine.
I'm a big fan of the 17 hmr as well.
I shoot hogs with 17hmr
The 5.7X28 was quite a bit faster than the .22 Mag so passed straight through and only surrendered a small portion of its energy , it dumped the rest into the ground behind and made a large dust cloud whilst also throwing up large amounts of dirt . The .22 Mag lost more velocity in the clay so lost more energy and thus made a bigger hole but still hit the ground behind and threw up less dirt the the 5.7 . The .17 HMR looked like it might have been a ballistic tip hollow point ? , but it dumped All its energy into the clay so made a whopping great hole in it and didn't have enough energy left to get to the back . .22 LR should never be underestimated , though it didn't expand each round made it all the way through and still made a nasty mess. Thanks for showing it's very interesting and good to watch , Shoot Straight Stay Safe & Stay Well !
💥💥💥
the 22mag 40g hp and the 5.7 ball round out of the cmmg both go 1850fps. same speed. the difference was the hp vs ball round.
@@Oldsoldiersays Thanks , I hadn't realised the .22 mag was also hp . Stay Safe & Stay Well.
@@richarddixon7276 np, i shoot alot of 22mag, hard to find non-hp mag rounds hehe. explains alot though. keep safe =)
@@poorfatman5317 Thanks ! , What is the exact title & channel so I Check it out . Stay Safe Stay Well !
The 17hmr looks like an ashtray I made in Kindergarten, and my parent's never smoked.
I show these videos to my wife so she has more confidence in her 22 mag.
22 Mag is nothing to scoff at.
Out of a four inches barrel revolver it's another different animal but, hey, even a .22 lr could save her life.
I purchased a 17 specifically for head shots on woodchucks at 75 yards (the distance from my back door to my barn) and it greatly outperformed the 22mag I was using. Dead on accuracy trumps clay destruction for me.
I've used all 4 of these calibers to shoot gophers. My favorite for cost/ effectiveness is the. 22 WMR , blows em up good lol.
💪💪
Wow! I really expected more from the 5.7! The 22 Mag seemed to do the most damage, but the .17 HMR
Wasn’t far behind. Never underestimate those itty bitty rounds! Glad you’re back!
The 22 Mag made the clay look like it was a werewolf PacMan.
😆😆😆
I got an ad the second you shot the clay and yelled wow. 1:43
It was an Aplebee's ad for $1 shrimp, and it started with James Brown singing "Wow! I feel good!"
😆😆😆
I have the same marlin 17hmr except with a synthetic stock. From what I have found The 17 was designed to energy dump and not over penatrate for varmints, sweet little round if you ask me.
I've heard the same thing, when a 17 penetrates it basically blows apart and sends shrapnel rather than exiting.
The 17hmr is a fast bullet. 200 yards and closer it just fragments. You shoot a milk gallon jug full of water at 200 yards and less it just blows the front out. However if you shoot a milk jug full of water at 400 yards the round is than moving slow enough to go straight through the jug front and back. Left a nice bb hole through it front and back.
17hmr have 3 different bullets....1) 17 gr hp. 2) 20 gr gamepoint 3) 20 gr. Fmj.....choose the bullet according to your game and it will do the job with good placement.
Total agreement. The .17 HMR was no surprise. That little baby dumps everything it has on impact! The 5.7 was no surprise as it just hauled right on through. The .22 LR was a little surprising & pleasing as well. To me the .22 WMR was the biggest surprise! WoW! It pleased me. Again - GREAT test/video!👍
That was cool,I would like to see the 5.7 in a comparable barrel.
Clay blocks never disappoint. Very dynamic medium.
Really fun to watch these, and informative! Small calibers are not to be ignored! Cheers!
Cheers!
What a dope video the 22mag destroyed that clay block. That was awesome firepower 💯💥
Fun video as always. This is why the .22 mag is my favorite rifle round. Favorite all around small and medium game round for year round hunting. My .30-06 gets the big game.
I love em all!!!
OK that truly surprised me as well! I absolutely did not expect the 17 and 22 mag to do that by far. I really wasn't surprised by the 5.7 but wow how cool Great, great video!
Surprised me!
Always smile when friends debate cartridges ... wanting muzzle power, stopping power minimal drop, terminal velocity, etc.... The best weapon is the one in hand and shot placement and accuracy is 99%... if need be send 3 more. That's how ranchers/farmers/cowboys took deer and antelope with 30-30's and how the buffalo hunters used black powder 45-70's. Great video! Would like to have seen some heavy subsonic rounds fired through carbine length tools.
💪💪🦌🦌🦌
Just when I know how it’s gonna work, it’s totally different, 22! Thanks Who-Tee- Who for a great video, as Always!!!
One MORE caliber that is comparable: 22TCM! I own it and, LOVE shooting it! Very little recoil, BIG fireballs, VERY loud! Overall, a LOT of fun!
22tcm 🔥💪🏼
But not easily available. Stock it deep when you find it.
17 hmr little bitty hole the rest a large hole. I think. No I was wrong. Ha!! That 17 hmr dumped a lot of energy.
Yeah what a great video! That's why I watch Who Tee Who!
Because it was a vmax bullet which explodes on impact and on the 22 mag and 5.7 he used fmj
My experience with actually shooting animals with the 17 is the solid ball ammo is perhaps more effective at dumping energy. My favourite round is the 17gr CCI solid. I also like the Hornady 17gr ballistic tip.
@@john-paulsilke893 17 hmr with hornady smmo will cut a squirrel’s head off knock them for a loop
@Marino didn’t know it existed. Shot some nasty pests killing my cats and chickens but the coyote situation sent me back to my double gun in 12ga. No.4 shot is absolutely capable of dispatching any of my pest problems out past 30yrds. After that I have gone 22-250 and the trusty .300 win mag. Don’t get me wrong, stationary and known distance under 180yrds and I can kill a damn elephant, but the real world requires snap shots with waaaaay more power. Prairie dogs are one thing but bigger animals need the humane power of real rifle rounds. (Or more skill then I have at least.)
Really good video. Very interesting how that played really did expect any of that. Really like the 5.7 round
Thanks for watching David!
I love how reactive and dynamic clay reacts to being shot. When I was a kid we used to build guys and heads out of clay and go to town with our 22 air rifles and sling shots. The trick is to put red clay inside the guy and heads. We also had fun results with shaving cream mixed with red food dye.
Also this just shows you that a 22 mag is a really good home defense round....I love 22 mag . I still want to get a pistol gripped auto loader rifle one of these days.
I'm frankly SHOCKED how much more damage the .22 magnum did over the 5.7x28. I'd have thought they'd be pretty similar, and .17 hmr results were as suspected. Even .22lr is still clearly no joke.
To be fair it didn't do "more" damage, the 5.7x28 just had so much more energy / velocity that it flew straight through. The .22WMR (which I love) was going slower, so the block ended up taking much more of the energy, hence a larger hole.
@@A407RAC Thing is, it doesn't really have more energy. Just more modern bullets and case/primer. But more damage is probably a result of more displacement from rounder bullet, not necessarily from energy difference.
I wouldn't put too much stock into this comparison. The 5.7 cartridge he used, had a tapered tip FMJ projectile. They're designed more for penetration than energy transfer. Not much opportunity for drama in a small clay block. I was actually impressed by how much energy it retained in such a short barrel, AND operating that particular gas return system. The .22mag had a blunt nose projectile, which lends a little more energy transfer. The ballistic tip .17 did, as you said, "expected". A projectile that small/light, with a ballistic tip, guaranteed the energy transfer. The 5.7x28 would've done much better with SS197 and a bit more distance to let it slow down. Assuming the .22HMR was a typical 40 grain projectile, velocities are similar (~2,000fps)... but the .22 projectile has a bit better design for putting holes in clay.
@@XtremeConditions It didn’t have more energy due to being shot out of a much shorter barrel and most commercial 5.7 loads being pedestrian.
No, the 5.7 is not weaker than .22 mag. The reason why the 5.7 didn't do as much damage is because it didn't transfer nearly as much energy to the clay. 5.7 is designed to penetrate armor, while .22 mag is designed to dump energy quickly.
Exactly!!
We need more 22 mag and 17 hmr from you WhoTeeWho!
I didn't expect that much damage from those calibers. Thanks for the videos and stay safe. Looking forward to seeing the fallow deer mount.
Surprised me. Hope to get the deer back soon!!!
22 mag was definitely my favorite
5.7 is absolutely devastating to anything it touches. The way it goes straight through everything is quit honestly terrifying. It’d be one of my last choices for a home defense situation because it’ll go straight though you.
Its a good round when you need a 2 for 1.
Check out the 22tcm it is what the 5.7 wants to be in its dreams of grandure.
It also shoots a 40 grain v max fragmentation style round at 1790fps from a ruger 57
Not true. The 5.7 can penatrate but it dumps its energy into that. Just like the .556 is good for home defense because lighter rounds tumble and don't penatrate multiple barriers as easily as heavier projectiles.
I’m sorry but it doesn’t compare to the mag, I promise you it spirals any varmint, it probably does have more “stopping power” I agree.. but the mag surprises you everytime ya shoot it..and I just found critical defense 45gr rounds. Let’s see how they do. Mag is my choice over anything trust me I know it sounds dumb but I’ve shot em all. The 6.5 is accurate too
The 17hmr cartridge did exactly what it was designed to do. Fragment on impact and not to penetrate. A more fair assessment of the 17 hmr would have been to use a 20 game point type of bullet rather than the Polly tipped type. Also I do believe that these comparisons should be done at realistic hunting ranges such as 100yds which would give a more realistic assessment of the capabilities of these calibres which is what we really need to know. My own finding from years of hunting is that I prefer 17 hmr over 22 mag over a variety of ranges.
These things are deadly as hell. That timy .17 inch diameter bullet of the 17hmr looks as small a some conventional airsoft pallets but holds a pretty devastating energy when fired. Just wonderfull these tiny things can do.
Looks like you could use a handful of the specialty 5.7x28mm rounds too. I'll get some your way this week sir!
FYI, in some of my more recent testing, a 40gr JHP Speer Gold Dot from the 22 mag, took the 16" barrel to = the velocity of the Speer Gold Dot 5.7 when fired from the 5.7 Pistol :D
Buffman - R.A.N.G.E. I'd be willing to bet that the ss198lf/ss195lf out of a ps90 bbl would destroy these clay blocks.
@@Bondarms410
Yes. Yes it does...
That 17hmr really surprised me. So did the 5.7 , I thought that would have done the most damage. Thought the 17hmr would do about what the 5.7 did and vise versa.
I stand corrected, on account of I can't stand erected.
It’s cause the 5.7 is flying soooo much faster. Doesn’t dump it’s energy into the target as fast
The 5.7 is doing what its built for watch gel test the 5.7 burns the 22 mag every way
The energy dump on that 17 impressed the fire outage me. Great video like always!
🔥🔥🔥
Been following you and paul over the last several weeks doing the clay block test. I think these are way more interesting than the ballistic gel because that wound channel doesn't close back up. It just stays suspended where it is, unless the blast more than compromises the center, then it just collapses. I got one for you on this medium. My two favorite rifle rounds. Extreme velocity vs dump truck force. The 22-250 vs 450 bushmaster on clay.
Ooh 22250 would be awesome!!!
I love my 22 mags. Try that again with a 22 mag hollow point

I have a savage minimalist chambered in 17hmr and at 100 yards I can shoot a dime sized group easily. It is extremely accurate!

I used to shoot (or blow up, depending on how you look at it) fresh cow patties with my 22magnum. Now that was fun!
You should try it with a 44 magnum. Results are crazy.

I have all but the 5.7. I got the mini poly tips which squirrel hunting from the deer stand are awesome but you have to head shot to salvage any good supper. 22 LR has been more then a reliable throughout all my years coming up. I found a new love using the short Sub Sonics which are quite awesome. That 22 mag can take down a lot and with great distance as I’ve seen my father using it which i inherited after his passing but super bad on varmints still. Enjoying watching 👍🏻
Those are some nice firearms and cool test, that 17hmr was impressive👍👍

That was awesome the 22 mag did some damage wonder how much a hollow point would do.

That's why I like the .22 Magnum. Cheaper than 5.7, gets nasty in soft tissue.

That truly was a really fun video, thanks for posting! Would love to see same test at maybe 50 or 100 yds! The .17 in this vid shows what a true varmint bullet does, just explodes that block on contact. The .22 mag was amazing, little fmj bullet creating huge cavity while still making it through. I live in an area where everyone has 5 plus achers that being said I need something for critter control. My local gun shop recommended the 17 cal and I was shocked at how effective it is a the fact that I can see it impact before the target can hear the shot. Plus it seems to have a flater pathway then 22lr. I enjoy watching your videos fun and usually learn something new. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching Robert!
I personally love the 22 WMR. It will actually punch through most bullet proof vests without plates. I like the smaller round too, but the rimfire makes mags a bit more complicated. I like the Kel-Tec CMR-30 and PMR-30 though.
Always love the content!! Always a whoooooollllle lotta fun. Could do lever actions vs clay ?

It's pretty coincidental that I was thinking right off the get go that I wished 22LR had been included in this and then there it was. Pretty neat video. I always enjoy your comparisons. I have firearms in all of these calibers, except I've never shot at clay with any of them. I expected pretty much the results you had with each caliber, except the 17 HMR, I didn't expect that one. I guess the speed of 17 HMR combined with the tiny projectile weight cancel each other out in such a way the you don't achieve penetration but you get the complete energy dump of that tiny high velocity round and it then expands or breaks apart, unlike 5.7, which is very fast but has enough weight to carry through penetration. I'm just guesstimating all this, but it was surprising to see the 17 HMR result. Sorry for all this nerdiness, I'm a big fan of testing and observing projectile type, speed and weight vs terminal results on different targets.
Great test. Thanks for using the .22LR. Just bought a new Marlin model 60. Have not had a .22LR since I was a kid. I forgot how much fun they are. Keep shooting and be safe.

WOO_TEE_WHO Found another one of yours 22 mag videos. I was totally surprised by all of the rounds, but I remembered squirrel hunting and using 22 shorts because the lr's would destroy most of your meat. We would use longs if the squirrels were way up in a Sweetgum(Witch Burr) or Pine.

I'd also love to see a comparison between 17 WSM (4.4 x 30mm) and 5.7 x 28mm, since they seem to have similar performance and energy! It's just a slightly smaller 4.6 x 30mm, for a fraction of the cost. Plus side-by-side seems to have equal performance to it as well!
Great video. With the amount of Cmmg stuff you got in video you do you think you would get little bit spotlight from them or some kind pay deal for testing new stuff
Maybe some day.
Interesting Science, Very informative !!

them ballistic tips really work at transforming all their energy to the poi .
I smell a clay density conspiracy!! 🤔. 😂😂 (really fun vid, as always)👍

5.7 isn't designed to bump it's energy, it was designed to penetrate, that's why it did what it did.
My wife loves Hobby Lobby and does much of her Christmas shopping there. Now I know what I want for Christmas! Lol.
I was surprised at the 17 hmr. 22 MAG definitely is the winner. That 22 MAG made a big hole.
💪💪 22 mag has some power
I have been a ceramic artist since 1982. I have bought Many thousands of pounds of clay. .. Hobby Lobby is much more expensive than a ceramic supply warehouse. Try Laguna Clay or google ceramic supply store ner you. * * If you buy 500lbs which is 1 pallet, 10 boxes 20 bags, the price is a little less. Clay has gone up. I use to buy clay for Under $8 a bag. Thanks for the great videos. My request is to see what caliber will go through the most clay blocks. Like you did with the gallon water jugs. :)
Thank you for the videos. I'd sort of like to see this using .22 LR ammo in a short barrel (2-3 inch), a longer barrel (4-7 inch) and then a rifle barrel (16-20 inch) and whatever other barrel length you want. This could give us a good idea of the gain or loss in performance when we are deciding on our next purchase.
Good idea. Appreciate you watching!!!
Very interesting... One of your best videos 👍
Thanks for watching John!
Keep the videos coming. Haven’t seen one I haven’t liked yet bro
Appreciate you watching bigtime
the 5.7 has a lot more penetration, thus the FMJ round didn't come apart as fast as the Vmax ,17 or the hollow point 22 mag. If the clay was longer the 5.7 would have a bigger cavity deeper. I'd also suggest Apples to Apples either all FMJ or all Vmax type projectiles
That 17HMR? Nice masterpiece you made there.
All of these were impressive!
I agree!!!
Great fun video ! 22 was surprisingly effective .
All good ones
Nice video. I'd like to see some clay control with 17 HMR with the 20g bullet versus the 17 WSM with 20 and 25g bullets. I shoot groundhogs out to 150 yards, so shooting clay at 100 would be a good comparison (perhaps the 5.7 x 28 too).
I want to see a 12 gauge slug in clay, hahaha! PS, nice video.
the 22 mag is way more powerful than it's predecessor.
👍👍
Now that looked like a lot of fun!
Bigtime!!!
