  • This is a mini-series on the basics of the new Buchla & Tiptop Audio modules. First up is the 281t Quad Function Generator. I'm really enjoying these modules and Tiptop has enthusiastically embraced the Buchla paradigm.
    These modules have shipped to various shops worldwide and can already be preordered. For more information go to:
    tiptopaudio.com/buchla/
    I've also put up a playlist of some of my experiments with the 281t and 258t here: • Buchla & Tiptop Audio
    And if you'd like to support my demos and tutorials my Patreon site is: / synthtodd

    It's amazing what can be done with two modules (and Todd's fantastic knowledge). I can't wait to get my hands on these when they finally arrive in the U.K.

    A nice explanation of quadrature would be really nice Todd. I have the sputnik quad and vco and use it for like double envelopes to kind of replicate breath... but don’t know where I got that idea originally

    They’ve done a great job on these modules in terms of design 😻 when compared to the Buchla, how similar do they seem in regard to control, range, and sounds? And nice to see you getting into “Kirk to the bridge” territory at 7:45 🤓

    Hi Todd thanks for the videos, does it also work as a slew when in sustain mode?

    • @vgermuse
      @vgermuse  Před 2 lety +1

      Hmm…good question. It merely sustains for the length of the incoming cv but maybe it either the attack or decay are receiving a cv their might be a slew like effect. I’ll give it a try.

    • @shane_l8085
      @shane_l8085 Před 2 lety

      @@vgermuse Yea thats how it works with the Pittsburgh Voltage lab, set the func gen to sunstain and send the cv to the input (which is otherwise just the trig input) and it's a slew, I could do with a few more function generators in my rack that would certainly be a deal breaker. Thanks.

    How does the 1 v/oct CV format interface with the eurorack standard of 5 or 10 v/oct?

    • @vgermuse
      @vgermuse  Před 2 lety

      Fully compatible - it is eurorack format

    I have a question about Quadrature mode with the 281t. I just received mine and I noticed that if I put A(Cycle) an B(Cycle) in Quadrature mode if A has a long attack and decay and that B has a short attack and decay, B will stop cycling during the Decay of A. Can you explain why this is happening?

    • @vgermuse
      @vgermuse  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Terry, I don't have the technical knowledge to answer your question, though Quadrature mode is predicated on A receiving a pulse in or in cycle and B in trans or sum. I'm guessing also cycling B is really confusing/clogging the intended structure/flow path.

      @@vgermuse Hi Todd, thanks for the answer. Keep doing these great videos :)

  • @G8tr1522
    @G8tr1522 Před rokem +1

    i still can't understand what the quadrature function does. At audio frequencies, it would mean that output B will lag output A by 90 deg. But is that still true at lower frequencies? Do you simply take the period of A, and delay B's start by 25% of that period?
    I wish the manual would reveal this. I understand "west coast style" embraces the unknown, but that doesn't have to mean hiding information from those who seek it out.

    thanks for the demo. i'd be interested to hear more about the top left cv-in, you were calling pitch, denoted 'processing input' in the tiptop manual. i'd normally associate the 1v/oct in with pitch!? the tiptop manual goes on to say it is for 'scaling, expansion, and inversion of pitch'.

    • @vgermuse
      @vgermuse  Před 2 lety +2

      Back in the day you might have a sequence going into the upper left then have a keyboard goin to 1/v oct to transpose that sequence. Many more options - let you imagination run wild ☺️

    • @stolencoats63
      @stolencoats63 Před 2 lety

      If you wanted a quantized sequence going into the 258, wouldn't you need to scale the voltage before the quantizer to narrow the range of notes? With the top left input, I guess you wouldn't really be able to use that for typical scaled notes? More for experimental non-western music sounds? For quantized stuff, would I just scale and quantize and use v/oct input like other oscillators? Would be nice to save an attenuator but I dont think it would work scaling after quantizing? I'm somewhat new to modular so trying to wrap my head around some of these concepts.
