KFC is considered by some locals as 'fine dining' in Jamaica, like a place you take a date. When Popeyes first came out, they had a place on Canal that was one of the few places open late enough you could get "food" after a night of excessive self=-medication in the Quarter. The chicken was suspect in those days (much better now IMO), but he RB&R was cheap and hit the spot.

*I don't have a problem with the difference between Popeye's and KFC taste-wise, but every Kentucky Fried Chicken I've been to in the last three years or so has been filthy, with lazy, rude help, and a twenty dollar box had about a pound and a half of crappy pieces in it. Popeye's is cleaner, their help is better and friendlier, their portions are for humans instead of hamsters that already ate, and... red beans and rice. I won't even go into how their biscuits are cooked all the way instead of being chalky dough like KFC's. Wait... oops. I respect KFC as a tradition, but I can't respect it as a restaurant.*

It's a tragedy that KFC has fallen in quality so much over the years. I can't blame Calli for still having a lot of strong feelings for it, it was my family's go to place when I was a kid, too. I can't quite remember when it was, but sometime in my early teens, I started going to Popeyes regularly and...oh man, it absolutely opened my eyes to better possibilities. Still would get KFC too, and it was damn good in it's own right, but as far as today's quality goes, Popeyes is still out of this world in terms of flavor and quality, might have even improved slightly since I was a teen. KFC is a shell of what it once was, kind of see it as the Pizza Hut of fried chicken. It used to have a distinct and far more consistent flavor and quality, but it's clear that ship has sailed. THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE THE WEDGES ANYMORE. W. T. F. Blasphemous, frankly...

Twice I have attended a physics conference in Baton Rouge timed to coincide with Mardi Gras. The physics was good, but the food was AMAZING. These were the only two times I have ever eaten a 7-course meal.
My favorite part was the crawfish etouffee. I had traveled with a colleague who is from India, and he had specifically requested vegetarian meals. When he pointed this out, the etouffee was removed, only to be brought back with the explanation that the cook said it was just seafood. I suppose they thought he was just another Catholic who was abstaining from meat on Fridays!

We were in Chicago and got a motel. My youngest son n I walked to closest place for food and Popeye’s it was. I begged for able to order in drive up n they allowed it. Older 3 kids waited at motel. We walked back with all the chicken. Flew to Iowa to visit family next day and youngest son was explaining everything and said we had to walk to Poppy-Essie’s n we all looked at him wondering wth he was saying… it finally hit us! 😂 20 yrs later n we still call it that and have them here in Iowa! At first one transport would drop her off n other come back like a standard appointment.....then the drivers just started waiting for her outside.....now the drivers go in and get it for her......and some of them pay...and grab their own lunch or that of other elders on the transport. Not many popeye's there so it's about a 30 minute ride....almost twice that in traffic! Now they r thinking of having a food tour where the old folks can go once a week together on a field trip!
