KFC is considered by some locals as 'fine dining' in Jamaica, like a place you take a date. When Popeyes first came out, they had a place on Canal that was one of the few places open late enough you could get "food" after a night of excessive self=-medication in the Quarter. The chicken was suspect in those days (much better now IMO), but he RB&R was cheap and hit the spot.
I'm from South Africa, KFC is amazing there... The colonel burger and wings are superb! Here in America... The "chicken sandwich" was only added a few months ago 🤣... Popeye's is rather delicious!
Neither of the hosts on this are old enough to remember when KFC was actually good. It all went to hell in the early '80s. I haven't had a good piece of chicken from that place since then. Also, Popeye's in my opinion has a better menue .
*I don't have a problem with the difference between Popeye's and KFC taste-wise, but every Kentucky Fried Chicken I've been to in the last three years or so has been filthy, with lazy, rude help, and a twenty dollar box had about a pound and a half of crappy pieces in it. Popeye's is cleaner, their help is better and friendlier, their portions are for humans instead of hamsters that already ate, and... red beans and rice. I won't even go into how their biscuits are cooked all the way instead of being chalky dough like KFC's. Wait... oops. I used to hate popeye but I ended up trying again and liking it. My brother disliked cooked shrimp but liked it to be fried shrimp which is tampura. All of my family members hate KFC but also in elementary we also go there.m

I can't quite remember when it was, but sometime in my early teens, I started going to Popeyes regularly and...oh man, it absolutely opened my eyes to better possibilities. Still would get KFC too, and it was damn good in it's own right, but as far as today's quality goes, Popeyes is still out of this world in terms of flavor and quality, might have even improved slightly since I was a teen. KFC is a shell of what it once was, kind of see it as the Pizza Hut of fried chicken. It used to have a distinct and far more consistent flavor and quality, but it's clear that ship has sailed. The KFC we have here is normal size but, they cleared out the center of the dining area and put a Buffet Table in the middle. It has all the chicken, bbq, and sides from the menu + pudding/fruit desserts. All you can eat for $9.99 You gotta love independently owned stores!
1:24 I'm not from Louisiana; I've never lived there; and I never intend to live there -- but he's right. Twice I have attended a physics conference in Baton Rouge timed to coincide with Mardi Gras. The physics was good, but the food was AMAZING. These were the only two times I have ever eaten a 7-course meal. My favorite part was the crawfish etouffee. I had traveled with a colleague who is from India, and he had specifically requested vegetarian meals. When he pointed this out, the etouffee was removed, only to be brought back with the explanation that the cook said it was just seafood. I suppose they thought he was just another Catholic who was abstaining from meat on Fridays!
Matt killed me with what he called Popeyes as a kid! 😂 when we lived in California and frequently flew back to Iowa traveling standby cuz worked for airlines got stuck places. We were in Chicago and got a motel. My youngest son n I walked to closest place for food and Popeye’s it was. I begged for able to order in drive up n they allowed it. Older 3 kids waited at motel. We walked back with all the chicken. Flew to Iowa to visit family next day and youngest son was explaining everything and said we had to walk to Poppy-Essie’s n we all looked at him wondering wth he was saying… it finally hit us! 😂 20 yrs later n we still call it that and have them here in Iowa! Love it!

Younger people won't remember but Kentucky Fried Chicken used to be prepared in a pressure cooker. It was so moist and sticky that you had to lick your fingers. They gave you lemon towelettes to get the sticky off your fingers . They had dinner rolls. No biscuits.And they only had cole-slaw mashed potatoes and gravy.

My 77 year old mama grew up in Wilmington North Cackalackers n now lives far from her "churn" in Pittsburgh PA....every week she schedules the old folks transport provided by the county that most elders use solely for medical appointments .....to run to Popeyes n bring home "some of that crispy chickens!" At first one transport would drop her off n other come back like a standard appointment.....then the drivers just started waiting for her outside.....now the drivers go in and get it for her......and some of them pay...and grab their own lunch or that of other elders on the transport. Not many popeye's there so it's about a 30 minute ride....almost twice that in traffic! Now they r thinking of having a food tour where the old folks can go once a week together on a field trip!
Does anyone out there remember Pioneer Chicken from California (Socal in my case)? It was the BOMB! That aside, Popeye's all the way. KFC- too soggy. Don't care for their so--called Extra Crispy, either.
I liked Pioneer. We had one in Lancaster. They sold pretty good English style fried fish too. Had a KFC on Rainier Ave at Genessee St in Seattle when I was kid that sold fish too, and burgers.
When we got our first Popeye's, it was cajun. Now, I don't know what it is but watered down spices or they run a cart of spices past bags of rice and live chickens.
99% if the time, people that prefer KFC over Popeye's it's nostalgia, because back in the day there Dad only had to pay $1.50 to feed his whole family.

When we got our first Popeye's, it was cajun. Now, I don't know what it is but watered down spices or they run a cart of spices past bags of rice and live chickens.

I can't eat beans and rice as a dish; it makes my blood sugar go through the roof and then I crash (pass out for 3 hours).
99% if the time, people that prefer KFC over Popeye's it's nostalgia, because back in the day there Dad only had to pay $1.50 to feed his whole family.
i remember the only time that my parents got me kfc as a kid. the place they went to apparently just, like, ran out of fried chicken for the night, and i had to get a grilled chicken breast. and as a 9 year old who was really really looking forward to eating fried chicken for dinner and was used to popeyes, i wasnt very happy
Best onion rings I ever had were at the Popeyes on Misawa Air Base in Japan! Perfectly spiced flaky crust and large, meaty, sweet, juicy onions!

This is a tough one, but if I had to pick one it would be Popeye's. Mainly because of the biscuits and the sweet heat sauce.
Since I am from Kentucky it pains me to say this, but the best fried chicken ever is in Tennessee at Hattie B's. Nashville Hot Chicken is the best - bar none.

Where's Team Chick-fil-A at? I don't care if it doesn't have bones, it's still "fried" chicken. Unless it's Sunday, then Popeye's or Publix will suffice.
Love me some Publix most anything but IMO their fried chicken is sub par, oddly I think Food Lion has the best grocery store friend chicken these days.
Publix fried chicken on its own is okay. Now their chicken tender sub.. sweet jesus that's good.
If you can't buy it by the bucket/box it don't count. Otherwise a McChicken is also "fried chicken."
Chick-fil-A is chicken sandwiches. It's not fried chicken.

Original recipe KFC chicken based on chicken only. BUT all the side dishes from Popeye's are better including the biscuits PLUS they have shrimp!
Shrimp I'll give you, but how in the world can you possibly think Popeye's has better sides? Only better side they have is their fries
