Listening Device - Parabolic Microphone

- This is a cool tool... which is actually a toy. Relatively inexpensive (link below), this listening device will help me find leaks in the woods. Today I'll show you how I use this nifty device to find bear bites in our organic maple lines.

How far was you able to hear things
For me it was dependent on the winds. On a windy day, not too far. On a quiet day 50m (54 yards). I don't use this all the time. but i can attest that it found a couple leaks that I had not found that were about year or two old. A bear had bitten the line and I could not find the leak on the back side of it. I was able to find the leaks on the top and bottom of the line but there was a bite on the back side that I could not hear or feel. For me, the cost of the tool (toy) was worth the sap we were able to save. If you live near us, you're welcome to come get it and give it a try. I have the CDL tool to find leaks and in the woods, it's not helpful. For it to work you have to be right at the leak. This device helped me scan a big area before narrowing down on the leak. Do you have a "map" of where your lines and drops are placed or is it something you know from placing?
Also, you got a loud laugh out of me for not needing the device to hear your wife! My wife and I are from Jersey, living in NC now, but yes, I can hear my Jersey Girl AKA wife from anywhere as well! 🤣
Plague, You can take her out of Jersey but engrained in her DNA! Sometimes she can be as quiet as a church mouse then out of nowhere comes that accent and then the head swivel.... Then I know I'm in trouble.... I really need to film that! I have not mapped the woods. Believe it or not, I actually know them like the back of my hand. I have spend so much time there, that I could probably guide something up the mountain sitting in my office with a radio. I thought about mapping it out when I first started but never got around to it. At this point since it is only me working the trees, I know where to go when something happens. There are some really cool mapping programs that would be fun to use and share with folks who tour the farm. This might be a good project for Gabriel or Isabel when they get older... It is funny that a toy like this works. In this case, it's the principle that saved us from losing a lot of water. We had a leak on the top that I could not find. It wasn't until I got this did I locate the leak. It gained almost an inch of vacuum when we fixed the leak. Thanks for watching! Kevin
