Yes a shorter actuator will work for the dump. I used the 9” because I had it. Given what a good actuator with at least 500lbs of force costs I don’t mind the extra length.
I think I am going to build something like this, but for the back with a winch powered by a cordless drill I saw on another video. Simple shovel, but saves on the back.
That might work but I question for how long. I can tell you that I have been using the same linear actuators, meaning I actually swap them over, for my snow blower lift (see other videos) for years without a problem and in freezing temps and wet conditions in the winter so keep that in mind because inevitably it breaks when you need it the most. Not always possible. I did this project more for fun than utility give these tractors are really not made for these loads but it turns out it worked amazingly. See the latest update I posted recently on this and other attachments I made for this tractor
Yeah I agree with you the tilt is a better design as you can lift higher and dump a little further however you need more metal, two actuators to lift which means more current draw, a different attachment point under the tractor middle which means the mowing deck may have to come off so overall more cost. Again I don’t dispute the benefits but the tractor is limited so this is s decent design for what the tractor can do and if you are going to mostly move mulch, my intended purpose, this works great. As I already did use this beyond the purpose I built it for I may very well build another one with tilt... just for fun!
Amusingly, modern sears outdoor equipment is mostly cheaply made, flimsy junk. Your attachment might outlast a dozen dead sears "tractors" (lawn mowers, really). Their products target 10-15 years service life for RESIDENTIAL use. There's GOOD REASONS you NEVER see "sears" or "craftsman" run by landscape contracotrs, not even LAWN SERVICES.
thats because the mowing deck can't be finely adjusted to mow accurately like commercial zero turns on the market. Really has nothing to do about being made cheap but more so of lack of options not really needed or desired by the average home owner.

I purchased the rear scraper/grader blade already made a while ago probably from Sears. Lowes carries one now for about $200

No hydraulics. They are all 12V linear actuators.
