  • Body solvents, panel prep, IPA wipe...whatever you use or call it. It is VERY important as the last step before protection. It can be hard to tell if a certain solvent is working...aside from picking out the best one. Today, we put some powerful solvents on the same panel and let them battle it out. Those included.......
    Citrol 266........www.amazon.com...
Citrol Concentrate is a concentrated heavy-duty, water dilultable, emulsifiable, industrial strength, biodegradable, citrus base cleaner and degreaser. Citrol Concentrate is designed for use in almost any industrial, transportation or general plant maintenance cleaning and degreasing operation. Citrol Concentrate is an excellent replacement for hazardous aliphatic, aromatic, chlorinated, fluorocarbon, alkaline, acidic or petroleum solvent base cleaners and degreasers. Citrol Concentrate is specially formulated from a combination of organic citrus based solvents and a multi-component surfactant-emulsifier system. This unique combination provides Citrol Concentrate with the ability to rapidly penetrate and remove a wide range of different soils, dirt and inks. Citrol Concentrate’s formulation does not contain any unacceptable petroleum distillates, petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated or chlorofluorocarbon type solvents
    IGL Precoat....www.autogeek.n...
IGL Ecoclean PreCoat was designed to completely strip the surface of your paint of all the oils and greases that collect on the surface either during routine use or after paint correction processes. IGL Ecoclean PreCoat uses citrus cleaner agents that will break-up the waxes, oils, and greases on a molecular level and break the bond they have with your paint, making them easy to wipe off. IGL Ecoclean PreCoat will wipe away without streaking to ensure that surface of your paint is perfectly prepared for a ceramic or silica coating!
    Optimum Paint prep.....www.theragcomp...
A combination of mild solvents dissolves and removes all the contaminants and leaves the paint squeaky clean and ready for the final protection.
Optimum Paint Prep does not contain any oils or surfactants and leaves no residue behind. You can use it for cleaning all interior or exterior surfaces whenever a clean surface is desired.
    Adams Surface Prep....www.amazon.com...
Adam's Surface Prep (8 oz) - A Cleaner That Ensures Your Paint is Clean & Ready to Apply Any 9H Top Coat Ceramic Coating After Clay Bar, Car Wash & Orbital Polisher Treatment

Prep all made by kleen strip. 20ish a gallon and what pro paint shops use in between coats of paint. Strips anything off without damage and ensures a completely stripped surface you could paint on

Thanks Brian. Always a pleasure to watch.
A lot of comments below show the confusion over IPA products.
Citrol would always win (and you know that 😉). An IPA wipedown would never beat such a strong solvent based pre wash product in removing existing protection.
But in the same token, I’d never use Citrol between polishing steps, which is what these IPA wipedowns are meant for - IPAs are not meant for prewash as you rightly demonstrate.
What I’d like to know is do IPA wipedowns leave residue???? In our tests here in UK some IPAs are consistently leaving something behind, or they’re just ineffective at removing polish residue and give very different water sheeting characteristics on a panel when tested before LSP. In theory they should all leave crystal clean clearcote. But do they?? That’s the test I’d like you to do. You could even swab the panel after and lab test it to see what’s left on it! Kind Regards

I have never expected paint preps to be able to remove sealants or even waxes. Just a last step to remove the compounding/polishing residue.

Brian I just picked up some citrol to test out. It did amazing at cleaning off old gunk and grime but I noticed something worth mentioning. I did a big area and noticed the citrol left a very oily surface behind you wouldn’t be able to apply a coating on top of this. I had to use super clean (alkaline) to remove the oil and get it squeaking again.
This is why the water behavior after citrol is so drastic during your test that is the oil on top. Look at your control section it’s sheeting water faster than the citrol side

Great video. I would have changed two things. I would have used a cheaper degreaser just because any good degreaser would have done the same job. Meguiar’s Super Degreaser comes to mind. It would have also shown how overpriced and ineffective some of these specially made prep sprays are. I would have also used a different rinseless wash to wipe down the panels since Reset does have some restorative properties in it. Better yet, I would have just used pure water on a low pile towel to get rid of residue. Food for thought, I guess. Amazing video and looking forward to your next one!

To my knowledge Reset car soap don't leave anything behind as glossenhancer or protection.

    • @roguegeek
      @roguegeek Před 5 lety +1

Tony Mattisson Carpro Reset is specifically made to be used on coated surfaces. From the description itself, it restores the beading and dirt releasing properties of a coated surface to help maintain its protection. I know that’s vague, but all I’m saying is if you want to be fully safe with this particular test, it would be better off using a wash with zero protective, restorative, or gloss enhancing abilities. Or even better, like I mentioned above, just wipe the panels down with a water soaked towel after they’ve been rinsed down.

steve, I really enjoy watching Brian putting on these comparisons, along with his in-depth how-to's! The detailing shop I had spoke of has been in business for many years and tons of clients bring their high end cars for him to detail them. I asked him about their being so many products to choose from and when someone like Brian puts on a comparison, he has a ton of different products. He laughed and said almost all Detailers will buy different products hoping to always find that "magical" product that will almost do all the work for you! He is the one that told me he has good luck with a perfume and dye free dish soap. Other people may use different things but this is his go to product. Then he said for 95 percent of the time he only use two products for the rest of the exterior. He uses Wizards Magic Cut to polish and then used Wizards Shine Master. He said there are hundreds of different products and every shop has their own favorites, but these are his. But everybody to their own!

Mostly will just spray the prep solution and call it a day which might not always be true.
some of the solvent's ingredients cling to the top of the surface and hide the water-beading characteristics and you might say the sealant is removed which it might be not.

A thought just for fun would be to use Carpro Reset car soap on 1 section. But have it in a spray bottle that has a dilution between 1:200-1:300. As it's says to be comprimase the wax or sealant when you dilute it stronger than the recommended 1:500. Not a panel prep maybe but a great prep wash before you start the correction or reapply your LSP. Would be interesting to see if it could at least compete with the alcohol panel wipe products.
We have one store chain that seems to carrie the Citrol 266 here in Sweden. And when I'm in a town that have this store I definitely will get a couple of cans of this. We have a domestic product that from the SDS is very simualar to Citrol 266. But is marketed as a label off product as an adisive remover. Would bet that Citrol 266 is also good to remove stickers and emblems. How is it with use on glass with the 266? There are often stickers there that many wants to remove. Or even use it for a prep before a glass sealant or coating.

what about bodyshop paint prep thats acetone/xylene based? those get anything off, i feel these are alcohol in a bottle except citrol

I use acetone on bare metal, wood, etc....but not painted surfaces.

@@apexdetail85 duplicolor, prepsol, and Eastwood has that stronger paint prep that's low voc or something but it really cleans paint well and literally degrades sealants instantly, I feel like these are just alcohol and water, keep up the vids!

I gotta ask where do you get citrial 266 local? What store carries it in your area? If I could find it locally I would be much happier

Some Napa stores carry it, but not too many. There are three near me, and only one keeps it in stock. If they're in your area, it might be worth your time to give them a call.

The gallon is a good option if you are going thru a lot. You can cut it at different ratios, and personally, I like not having the aerosol.

@@apexdetail85 Sweet! I guess they are claiming it is a paint prep because they say it removes polishes and compounds, they don't claim it to remove wax/sealant. But they do say it leaves no polymers or gloss agents.

I’m a fan of 914 because its one of the few rinseless soaps that leaves nothing behind. I have yet to try their 8:1 for panel prep.
