      check out Jim Caveziel's interview when he talks about being beaten by the soldiers in The Passion. They did it historically accurate so there were bits of iron and bone in the whip but of course were hitting a board on his back and the actor hitting him wasn't pulling punches. The actor missed once and a thong with iron hit Caveziel on the side and he almost fainted from the pain. He said he (as a Christian) suddenly fully appreciated the torture leading to Christ's death. He didn't have a problem with being "in character" at that point!

      @Mevb83 Před 9 lety +36

      Wesley Hsu John Rhys-Davies didn't recieve any injuries in connection to filming in Rohan unlike Viggo and Orlando, though his stunt/scale double Brett Beattie dislocated his knee. Rhys-Davies did suffer eczema from his prostetics on his face, which made it itch, his skin peeled and got a reddish hue, resulting him not being able to wear the Gimli make-up everyday (he had to take a "day-off" every three days or so, a body double would be in place of him while John read his lines off-screen). Because of this he's not willing to play a dwarf role ever again (except through voice work or possibly motion capture).

This is also why in nearly all of his scenes he's alone because he would do all of his takes after everyone else so that they could reduce the number of times they had to take off and reapply the prosthetic.

Which is still one of the best scenes in cinema history. Have to give the title of biggest trooper to Viggo though. In the scene with the Uruk-ai fight that knife he blocked was actually blocked by Viggo. It was supposed to be thrown to the side, but the orc contact lenses wreaked havoc on the actor's depth perception, so he accidently threw it right at him. Same thing with the head butts, they were full force on accident because even at that distance his depth perception was shot and was unable to pull them in time. That actor must have felt so bad for just beating the shit out of Viggo by mistake, but it made such a real raw scene.

    I think one of the things that was done better in the Lord of the Rings than in the Hobbit was the sparing use of CGI. It seems a lot of scenes, like the scene with the Uruk body pile at the start of this video and when they were running over the mountain, could have easily been achieved with CGI, but they chose to do it in real life. In the Hobbit, I just feel that too much CGI was used. Namely the fight scenes in the first movie between the dwarves and the goblins.

    There truly is no other movie franchise that brings such a satisfying range of emotion as LOTR does and I don't think there ever will be again. The LOTR trilogy is a lottery franchise. Lighting captured in a bottle. Striking gold. The amount of effort put in by these wonderful actors and the stunning cinematography shows scene after scene. Every crew member and shot was meticulously put together to create this work of art and I'm so thankful decades later to even have experienced it. Although I will admit now it is a bittersweet feeling as we all age. Part of me wants to go back to that point in time when we were younger, these movies/characters were still relatively new but loved, and to share that moment with the world all over again. These injuries and sacrifices were the reason why lord of the rings are on of the best movies ever. Making a great film requires sacrifice and hard work. It demands reality. Of course safety should come first. But if a character is supposed to kick a metal helmet, it should be just that and not a cgi helmet. These injuries were the result of the crew and characters pouring their soul into the project, making the best movies of all time.
    CGI should only be used for something that is impossible to do with props. Like gollum, massive battle scenes or enhancing a few shots. Cities should be miniatures props enhanced by CGI. Orcs should never be CGI.
    Another thing that CGI ruins is realistic movement. One thing that made gollum work so well is because Andy made him so believable. Just like Oz made yoda. And then they spent millions of dollars in the hobbit to make gollum better, with enhanced muscle coordination etc. Honestly, I can't tell the difference. The point is that if a CGI character moves like a cartoon that makes it unbelievable.

It does though get a bit too obvious it cg at moments where everything on screen is animated, fx. in the aforementioned scenes with Gollum in water or drowning in lava. But these moments are relatively rare and other than those I really think Weta workshop did an amazing job on the cgi in lotr!

    • @camerondye6108
      @camerondye6108 Před 6 lety +22

      Sigurd Torvaldsson the hate on cgi is unwarranted. People hate on CGI because they only notice bad CGI. For example, in the Avengers, every single shot of New York in that movie is 100% cgi. All the cars, everything. Set extension is a common use for cgi in castles in fan style films and distant mountains. The days of using miniatures is over. Frankly, they don't look that good. You can tell they are scaled down version because they lack detail

They're trying to hide it, sure, but you see some of the pain on their face and body language and whatnot and that REALLY blends in well with the story, because as Gimli so aptly puts it "Three days and nights pursuit. No food, no rest, no sign of our quarry but what bare rock can tell!", these guys are exhausted and at their limits so having the actors physically pained in every shot really pushed this feeling through the screen.

    Sean Astin had a piece of glass go through his foot. At the end of Fellowship of the Ring when Elijah is leaving on the boat, Sean comes running down to the water and as he wades into it, a huge piece of glass pierces the bottom of his foot and comes out the top. When it happened, Sean didn't say anything, but just kinda stood there for a moment. He had to be air lifted out for medical treatment. Funny thing is, Peter Jackson had divers in the water beforehand to look for glass or anything sharp before the scene.

    That's the beauty of the old films, shots are taken in actual places unlike now we have CGs, I understand that it cuts production time and complexity of the scene but it also gives you the immersion of the scene and how the entire scene looks genuine, I remember when I was young seeing LOTR it felt like it was really taken in a different world of how impressive it looks, Rivendell, mines of moria and the wide fields of Rohan is just amazing. I feel that it was taken for granted since now we rarely see movies like this.

    Nobody's talking about Sean Astin's injury from the first one? The scene in which Sean Astin (Sam) walks out to the boat that Frodo's on at the end of Fellowship, there were a couple of divers who inspected the surface to make sure he was good to go. When he walked out to the boat, he stepped on a piece of glass that completely pierced his foot, in through the bottom, out through the top. He had to get a helicopter transfer to a hospital and get several stitches.
