  • OHMYGOD HEY!
While theatres have been closed and the nation has been locked away in our homes, news has emerged that Sir Cameron Mackintosh has put plans in motion to renovate the original, long running production of The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre.
While this news is welcome to some, others have rallied against the announcement of 'an all new production' and the various cost cutting measures to the Orchestra and staging that are believed to be taking place.
A change.org petition to retain the show's brilliant original staging has over 5000 signatures.
In this video I spell out everything we know so far, courtesy of some dutiful updates from my friend Shaun Tossell (theatrefan.co.uk)

I think with what's happened world wide it is the correct decision. Isn't it more important to get any show back up and running rather than a beloved show closing. Theatre is a constant evolving creature x

The 25th anniversary was unique. It was a concert. In a concert hall. They didn’t have the room to have all the staging of the original anyway..

It's been two years since you made this video and I only saw it for the first time today. I read an interesting book about Hal Prince. He was quite proud that ALL of the scenery for Phantom was delivered "from the floor" as opposed to flying in from above. That's an interesting way to change the scenery...especially in the opening auction scene where the multiple curtains rise.

When i was about 14 years old i saw The Phantom of the Opera touring version in Toledo Ohio and i loved it although i was in a safe spot from where the Chandler fell so far it just fell on the stage despite that i loved every minute of it i thought the boat scene was very cool although it did take awhile to see it , and when i hear the rumors that the Phantom west end version in London was either going to be replaced or closed down during the Pandemic i was consider that on Why would they do that? i do know that it was the same thing with Les Miserable but i knew Phantom is the longest running show of all time even though some of the set pieces are being unbreakable including the Chandler when it falls in the end of the 1st Act and they have to bring it back up to start the 2nd act it is always hard to do that in every performance.

If the new one is the first version you ever see, then it may be fantastic. If it is not the first time, and you compare you reaction to this version to the feelings you had when you first saw it, it will never live up to your expectations. You will be disappointed. It can never be a first time again. Just seeing the exact same thing over and over is the next best you can do, and you don't want that opportunity to be taken away. When I saw the revised version of Les Miserables here in Australia, my reaction was there was nothing wrong with it, but I miss the spinning barricade, so I was a little underwhelmed.

Sad pie tears 🤣 great video! I watched Seth Rudetsky’s stars in the house with the original les mis creative team and I was moved hearing Trevor Nunn despair about the fact that Les Mis had been restaged without his involvement. As it’s a business after all, I see why Cameron Mackintosh has made the decisions he has with Les mis and why he’s tempted to do something similar with phantom. But I can definitely also see why people are upset. Let’s see what happens!

As an aspiring pit musician, the orchestra cut is scary

I think what I’m upset about is that I can’t see the original show one last time, fans of les mis did. I just don’t know if I would want to see a new version of the show, if its completely different. But I do agree with what your arguments.

To be honest I would be happy if they even used the UK/US Tour set because I liked that set! I don't mind in my opinion!

Hi I am so sad to hear today that Phantom of the opera is closing in London. No information to say that the new production is coming in , Just that Phantom is closing , The Les Mis tour is happening sooner than I thought 2021 rather than 2022 ( Or maybe 2022 at some venues). I think it is sad that the Phantom tour is cancelled to , I had tickets to see it in Manchester and Birmingham. I was hoping to go to London to see the show in 2021. I have had to change my Virgin Vochure booking to Mamma Mia today I love Mamma Mia but so sad I cant watch Phantom in London again in the near future. Saw it three times in London between 2016-2017 , Mainly because I wanted to see Ben Forroster as Phantom which I saw on my 3rd visit. Its an amazing show and I feel privillaged to have seen three great Phantoms in London , Luke Mccall ( In one of his first shows as Phantom). Scott Davies and Ben

Is it fair to put a touring production into the west end and still charge west end prices!

I would be ok with them changing the set pieces. Adding something new like that can add new life to a show and can keep it going for longer but what I would not be happy with is if they change the tone of the show. I saw Cameron's 2012 tour and I disliked the darker tone they attempted i.e. The Phantom getting all 50 shades in Music Of The Night with the blindfold on Christine, Christine attempting suicide and nearly jumping off the roof before All I Ask Of You, Raoul being played as more short-tempered and aggressive to fit in more with the Love Never Dies story line. I just hope they keep that part of it as it is. I think that's what a lot of fans are concerned about and it could end up killing the show. It's a shame we didn't get to see more of what the new tour was like!

Hi,gd video,C Mackintosh is only part producer- its not just his show but half Lloyd Webber's, i under stand your points and what you said, however i for one is not about a complete change,i like how the set looks and ok if they make a replica set pieces for replacement, i would also be ok to personally add some elements but i dont wish anything to be taken out plus i get the production may need technical work done, the music is fabulous and i like the chandelier, also people dont know that not all the instruments are in the pit, some keyboards are in a box on house left.

Phantom was the show that got me into musicals before I ever saw it. I had and still have the LP. I never saw the tour I wasn't interested. I don't want to see the original changed. Up date it yes but don't change it xx

The phantom has had a long run, and from what i have heard, it's not going to reopen again, and people are upset as well, well its had a long long run, and the theater should be open to let new shows in once we are able to get theater back and running again. plus we still have the phantom ion Broadway, and such. But getting upset over what right now is a hard thing to deal with should not be a main concern for people, there are more important things like trying to get theater up and running at all.

The original Hal Prince staging is iconic and far superior than anything Lawrence O’Connor ever did PERIOD
