  • Turbo trainer, indoor trainer or ergo trainer. Whatever you choose to call one, they're a fantastic training tool. Here's GCN's guide to choosing one.
    Follow GCN on CZcams for more: gcn.eu/gcnsubs
    Turbo trainers are a great way to keep fit if you don't always have the time to ride outside. They're also great for high intensity training to supplement your other work on the bike. There are several different types of turbo trainer on the market: magnetic, fluid and direct mount, not forgetting the alternative option - rollers.
    Daniel Lloyd and GCN break down the benefits of each turbo, helping you to make the right decision when it comes to buying one.

    For rollers there are generally 3 size drums. 4.5", 3.0", and 2.25". The resistance goes up with the drum size going down. 2.25" has 90% more resistance than the 4.5" drums. So if you want to get more of an interval workout on these you can buy ones with smaller drums. The 4.5" barely have any resistance. I've used some and at 300 watts (I weigh 147lbs) I was doing over 35 mph and running out of gears!

    Well, I have a tacx blue matic, which i noticed you show a glimpse off. I did a video about it and had some people slate the equipment, but for the money, it's alright. It's not as good as going on the road, but after walking the dog, in lockdown, then I can't go out on the road, so it's good enough! Good video. Straight talking, and not uppity, which is so common nowadays!

    During the winter I use both a Kurt Kinetic 'rock and roll' fixed trainer and a set of CycleOps rollers. The rollers are definitely more engaging. I like the fixed trainer for intervals, simulated climbs and just plain hammering...

    I used the Tacx T2500 Booster which comes with a solid metal spinner and a adjustable magnetic spinner to set up the resistance from November till early April just few days ago. Today it is my first outdoor riding and I can see the effect on my power specially it is quite windy today about 35km/h wind. My average for the entire 55 km holds at 23.7km/h which is the flat ground mild wind during last summer. Now that is impressive, but to keep the daily training for the entire winter it is a challenge for me at the beginning till I found out I am no longer illegal to wear ear phone listen to my favorite beat music, because it is in my home now, which typically 5-7 music for half an hour so I know if I had enough or not.

    If you are at all serious about indoor training, direct drive is the way to go IMO.
    Having to switch tires to avoid tire wear is a hassle, and that tire will wear after a winter's workout indoors.
    I intend to get one by next season.
    The magneto or fluid trainers are not that noisy though.... I mean during normal day evening use the noise level is acceptable. Not as bad as some other types of noise heard in apartment buildings. That also my opinion.

    Since you are featuring ELITE, it's also worth mentioning that they make mag resistance rollers too. I've got a set and they are much harder than the base model with no resistance. I can get up to threshold power for TT training easily, however I wouldn't do intervals or sprinting on them, I use a turbo for that.

    I'm looking into picking up cycling as a hobby/exercise. My long-term goal is to be able to cycle a certain 21-mile track. I'm rather overweight but I know how to cycle and am mostly doing this to lose weight doing something I enjoy. My partner also wants to start cycling with me this summer just for fun. However, I want to get a trainer so I can cycle indoors when I'm short on time or the weather isn't good. I really don't care about how realistic it is, and see little use for smart meters or power meters given what I'm using it for.
    Can anybody give me advice about what turbo trainer to pick? I think the magnetic one may be enough but I want to be able to hear my TV so I can cycle with the TV on. Has anybody purchased a magnetic one and can share their experiences?

    I have a women's Road Master Cruising bike, which I'm told I can't put the special skewer into the back wheel. The wheel itself is bolted in, not a quick release. The local bike shop told me that I would have to buy a new wheel and that the trainer itself would have to remain on the bicycle permanently. All said and done this would run me about $250 US. The bike itself didn't cost that much. Are there any bike trainers on the market that I can just put my bike axle in? I'm not a racer by any stretch of the imagination. I also take medication that affects my balance, so rollers are totally out of the question. I just want to get in shape without spending hundreds more on a stationary bike. BTW I just noticed that trainers are mostly designed to increase difficulty as we pedal faster. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? I haven't had the chance to use any of these trainers, but I would love to have the one that decreases difficulty as I pedal faster until I max my rpm then shift gear to start another level of difficulty and maxing it again and in doing so gaining me incremental speed gain....

      Hi, great review! I totally agree with you. It seems counterintuitive that the trainers are designed to increase difficulty as we pedal faster. By shifting gears and starting another level of difficulty, we could continue pushing our limits. Speaking of new projects, have you heard about the freebeat Morph 2-in-1 eBike? • @gcn

I have a fluid trainer (elite power fluid) and the fluid trainer isn't the best for some kind of excercises such as Force resistance Slopes or something more specific. If you want to pedal at low FREQ simulating slopes, you can't do it. If you have a MAGNETIC trainer you can do it. Look riders warming up before races, NO ONE uses FLUID trainer but only magnetic.... Chaiyamitr Khuntamitr Your warranty might be voided if you use you carbon frame on the turbo. Check the warranty you got with your bike or contact your LBS. Always best to be on the safe side!

    • @gcn
      @gcn  Před 9 lety +1

      Hi Mark, how often you oil your chain is a separate issue to what type of turbo you have, but if you are only riding indoors then you shouldn't ever have to oil your chain really. Just make sure you clean it thoroughly before you start and then apply a light lube. If the chain ever starts getting noisy though, that's when you apply more lube.

    Hi Everyone! I have read all the time turbo trainers can stress frames /carbon and alloy also/ but I do not hear bad experiances when a trainer broke a frame, do you have such experience? anyone? I think basic 100 rpm normal pace training does not affect frame on a trainer, or am I wrong?

    • @ChuiStrong
      @ChuiStrong Před 8 lety

      exactly the reason why I went for rollers instead of a trainer. trainers do put stress on points of the bike that isn't design to be stressed. the headtube is fixed, the rear triangle is fixed. everything is pretty much fixed when on the open road it is not. trainers like the Kurt kinetic rock and roll does solve that issue.

      Adam Shutt we love rollers but it's easier to get a hard training session in on a turbo, so we'd buy a turbo trainer first.

    Hi rollers are fun and there are rollers that offer resistance, it would also be nice to review the specific types of rollers. (I have the elite V-Arion) the tacx galaxia and elite e-motion seem interesting but i'm curious if these really make a difference against the stationery rollers

      Hey there! I just stumbled upon a new project that might interest you. Have you heard of the freebeat Morph 2-in-1 eBike? It's a blend of fitness and technology, and what caught my attention is its indoor recharge feature. Imagine being able to charge your bike while applying the indoor mode! Seems like a great way to stay active even when the weather is not allowing outdoor rides. I haven't tried the tacx galaxia or elite e-motion rollers myself, but I'm curious to see if they really make a significant difference compared to stationary rollers. What's your experience with different types of rollers?

    Could you tell us some approximate numbers for the rollers (watts)? I hate stationary trainers but I'm afraid that a roller's resistance is way too low as you mentioned.

    • @i_just_dont_care_anymore
      @i_just_dont_care_anymore Před 10 lety +1

      I had a basic (no resistance set) and I got up to about 260W at 53x11 doing close to 50kph and 100+ cadance. At higher cadences, unless you are very smooth it tends to get bouncy and unstable. With the mag rollers I can do 300W in 53x14 at about 38-40kph and much lower cadence (80-90), so it's rock solid. Thar's only on the first mag setting, The unit has a power vs speed graph sticker that says it should allow for up to 500+W.

    • @MetallicaSindre
      @MetallicaSindre Před 10 lety

      I bought an Elite roller once, can't remember it's name, but it was a magnetic one. I can recall that it should handel up to 900W. But you should always check what the etiquette says before you but one.
      Even though it could handle 900W, the tire might slip if your cadence is low, and the power output per revolution is high.

    • @gcn
      @gcn  Před 10 lety +1

      As Alex Reimers has pointed out, rollers with smaller drums create more resistance and can give you a proper workout, even if you've got as much power as the pro's.
      Standard sized drums offered us around 290w at 100rpm in our biggest gear (53x12).
