- The Red Komodo X Is Cool I Guess
The Red Komodo X is the newest Red camera out on the market right now. It's the big brother to the compact Komodo, and it comes with a couple of new features that we didn't see in the previous DSMC3.

Yo bro, you entertaining as hell bro, loved the video. Bout to get a KX myself!
Appreciate it! Yessir! Lemme know how you like it ^
Good video. Definitely like to to the full review. Subscribed.
Thanks for the sub! I’ll work on the full review and release it sometime soon
goated review fr
Great video! I'm Still running with the OG Komodo and renting the Raptor from time to time
Thanks! OG Komodo is still fire tho
Thanks, man. The KX is a beauty
Thanks! Yes it is 😎
Brandon Washington has a side by side comparison between the X and OG and you can definitely see the difference. To me it was like seeing the difference in 4k and 6k. The X is cleaner and more resolute.
The Komodo X does have quite a few steps up from the OG Komodo, I can't tell too much of a difference between the two myself haha, but I'd replace the Komodo with the KX because of the higher framerates
Great video! We'd love to see the full on review! Quick note: The SDI Protocol is actually to power everything on (batteries, monitors, accessories powered by D-tap) and THEN plug in the cable. An easy way that I remember is LIFO. Last IN, First OFF/OUT. Anyway, subbed!
Thanks for the sub! Subbed back
That is the protocol usually, but it is known that Reds don't have shielded SDIs, so you do risk blowing out the port if the camera is on and you plug in the SDI when it's on.
Personally, I've plugged in the SDI following standard protocol and haven't had a problem. Every once in a while the screens do go black for a couple of seconds and then turn on right after, so I've learned to just not plug in the SDI into Reds when they're on. Better safe than sorry, don't wanna damage something that costs $10k lol
You have the protocol entirely mixed up. You will fry your sdi port like that. You power everything on, then plug in the monitor and then plug in the camera. When powering down you first unplug the camera sdi and then power doen. This has been widely documented.
Thanks for the follow up Will! 🙏🏾
@@farhadk wait - who is mixed up? Me or Will?
I’ve been powering everything on (including camera) and accessories and connecting the SDI as the last step. Haven’t had any issues or blackouts.
I also am not powering the monitor or any accessories with DTAP/v-Mount (the same battery powering the camera) so there shouldn’t be any circuitry or electrical issues with grounding.
The SDI issue isn’t a RED thing from what I’ve heard - and affects all cameras with SDI. I don’t know if another protocol based on the camera.
@ yes that is the correct way Tim, sorry for the confusion.
@@farhadklate response on this haha
Well, with most cameras I believe, this is okay to follow a normal SDI protocol
However, I recently just ran into this problem with the Red Komodo
A renter recently did this same process, power on, plug in SDI, etc.
This indeed fried the SDI port, and the signal cuts in and out now
This is apparently a known issue with all RED cameras
What was the wide angle lens you were using (and commented on) at the beginning of the video?
RF 14-35 :)
That's a sick rig! I've been looking to rent the Komodo X. I don't think I can switch from the FX6.
Def try it out! Fx6 has that dual native iso tho
The KX does better in low light compared to the original Komodo, but the fx6 is still a beast in low light
Would be great to see a comparison between the Komodo X & R5C. Personally, I am considering upgrading to a Komodo X from my C70 & R5C, I think it would be useful to a lot of people looking to switch!
C70 and R5 have always been a go to combo for me haha, did you find a way around the short battery life with the R5C?
@@TheWillTran Yes! I use a Smallrig V-mount plate, rods & the Nano One V-mount battery. I can finally get a full day of shooting out of that thing!
@@bayshiro Nice! You okay with the form factor too? Not too heavy?
@@TheWillTran It's light enough for handheld stuff, still figuring out a rig for my gimbal
XLR capability, low-light performance, and higher frame rates are the biggest upgrades from the OG to the KX. The audio options alone make the KX compelling imo
I actually didn't test out its low light performance yet, but I did hear a little bit about that!
Def will talk about that in the full review
At what price such improvements? Worth it?
@@joaquinperalba1624Honestly, if you don’t care that much about higher frame rates, built in XLR, and maybe a little bit better low light performance
It’s probably not worth upgrading from Komodo to KX ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's not to dumb it down that compression ratios are limited, it's because the hardware is hard-coded for each compression ratio - if they offered 12 it would be 12 chips and more weight and costs and heat and so on. The DSMC 2 and 1 cameras used a software compression that did not involve dedicated chips. The compression type is also different.
Ahhhh makes a lotta sense, that’s something I didn’t actually understand about the DSMC3
@@TheWillTranthey have some info on their site. The new compression is called Wavelet and is different than the dsmc2
NGL, the R5C footage looks better
How the heck did you get your hands on a red?! How much is this model? Last i looked at red cameras they were like 10’s of thousands of dollars
I’m out here still saving up for a sony alpha 7 mk 4 - or mk5 whichever is the 4k i’d have to recheck been a min - but yeah dang dude thats crazy.
Rentals and work haha
I work at a camera shop, and we got it in pretty much as soon as it came out. Though, keep on working! Good to hear from you again!
@@TheWillTran ❤️ hope all is well with ya bud. Keep it up. I see our channels are both at 2k now! Too the moon we go
What state are you in? arizona? Beautiful city.
Nah, Texas, it’s burning out here 😂
I agree with you, DSMC2 or GTFO.@@TheWillTran
The colors are not better than the og Komodo….. looks like crap
He's not using NDs
@@aalleejjoo no one’s talking about nds …. Facts the colors on the og komodo look a lot better than this kx…. The komodo x color look like crap compared to the original Komodo…. Nothing do yo with nds
They tried to match the Raptor with the KX, which I also wasn't really impressed with color-wise.
He’s shooting on Extra low quality settings, as stated in this video.
