That’s a hard question to answer. There are plenty of factors that come into play… is it flat when you export it or only flat when it’s uploaded?
Great comparison bro! Funny, I actually ended up switching to Canon for the same reason. I had an order in on an FX6 for over a year and couldn’t get one and eventually caved and got the C70 and haven’t looked back. Thankfully I have only had really positive experiences with Canon so far so hopefully they keep that going 😂

C70 shoots a straight 4k (thats why it is a little softer) and dynamic range matters most. Everyone loves the Arri look and their sensors were sub 4k for over 50k. Love my C70
I’m pretty sure the fx6 is also a true 4K sensor not downsampled. But yeah dynamic range is incredibly important!

I was all Canon for 15 years, I just switched to Sony a few weeks ago. The gate keeping of clog2 is what ultimately pushed me over the edge. Meanwhile Sony gives access to Slog3 on all of their cameras.

The C70 also doesn't have a horizon level while recording, right? Most Canons seem to not have it, and it drives me nuts.

I would have liked to see the comparisons in actual run and gun and on set use cases. I've used the C70 four times for weddings and some spec ad work, and IMO its image quality is miles beyond the FX6. You have to rig it out a bit, but it's completely useable out of the box, unlike the Komodo, and that's the cost of having a cinema camera. The FX6 has more and affordable lens options, but with an EF-RF adapter, you can use less expensive EF glass (but I would opt for renting cine glass for any big budget project anyway).
Not sure how to compare that but the fx6 imo is a better run n gun camera overall.

I have up on Sony because they STILL haven't managed to nail their colour science and repeatability of a given look, settings for settings. With the FX6, and FX9, I got things to a point where I like what I was getting out of the camera , then then next time we went for it at the same settings, it was bloody different again. It's annoying, so annoying.
I'm now sticking to Arri and Canon.

I seen Blaine's video two weeks ago so decided to purchase it and it was well worth it. Helps get more of that look to. What about the z9 is that good for music video flim making production etc.
No experience with the z9 but really almost anything on the market rn would work for music videos
I own a Z9, but also bought a FX6 recently. I think Z9 has better image quality if the lighting is not too dark, and you are willing to shoot and edit 8k NRAW. But 8k raw is not suitble for many projects, because of the massive file size and hard to edit. For music videos, Z9 is great. But nlog on Z9 is not as good as slog3 on Sony, and 4k nraw is not downsampled from 8k. So the only way to maxmize the dynamic range on Z9 is to shoot on 8k nraw, and export your work in 4k. You also have to use Davinci Resolve, because premiere pro and final cut doesn't support nraw. (You can convert nraw to arri logc with resolve CST, its a bit complicated, but the footage looks very good)
Can't shoot in 4k 10 bit 422 in a compressed codec on the FX6. Thats truly what I need 95% of the time. Sold mine after about 6 months of owning it.

Love the video, everything was super well done! I LOVE the C70, and the image out of camera with Clog2 always pulls me back to it, like a toxic ex.
But, I think one thing that is seemingly super underrated with the FX6 is having the FX3 little brother so easily available, as a B Cam. Once you go lower than the C70, you're using the likes of the R5 and such with Clog3, and it just never hits the same. It's a LOT more digital looking. Clog3 is horrible with noise performance and shadow cleanliness, etc. That's always been a con to me, Canon just doesn't have the right "full kit".

Yeah… the c70 doesn’t have a solid B cam unless it’s the r5c and even that is not my favorite.
I did use my s5ii as a B cam and that worked perfectly fine for me but I also use phantom LUTs for both so the color matched pretty well with one click.
Not sure if I’m in love with the Sony image yet, but it works!
@@AnthonyRodriguezz I’ve found compressing the highlights more, honestly especially with Phantom (personally feel Phantom has a bit of a harsh look…but I’m someone who just likes a softer less deep look) and softening the overall contrast has really helped me get to a point where I love the Sony image and don’t miss the C70 *as much* as I usually do 😅

Mainly because it’s a better video camera overall.
Matching them is pretty easy using phantom LUTS
Love the comparison!! If I hadn’t already been so invested into Canon glass and other bodies I definitely would’ve switched over to Sony. Still considering getting an FX3 and using it alongside my C70.

If the side handle on the FX6 uses an Arri Rosette chances are the screws are just loose and you can tighten them up with the appropriate set of torx screwdrivers.
Unfortunately it’s not an Arri Rosette 😔
It’s a proprietary Sony thing that nobody has figured out how to tighten
@@AnthonyRodriguezzThat's incredible. I had the handle on my C300 MK3 come loose at least five times and automatically assumed this was fixable on any full-size camera. Proprietary solutions like that suck.
@@AnthonyRodriguezzWas it lose right after you bought it? I just bought a used FX6, but it only has 26 hr runtime, and still in mint condition, the side handle is pretty tight, doesn't make any audible noise when handling the camera. Hopefully it can stay this way.😅
@@AnthonyRodriguezzI think tilta does make arri rosette adapter for the fx6 side handle, maybe it can solve your issue.
well, you just forgot to mention that you have a v-mount batterie on the FX6 to help the ergonomic feeling / evenly distributed camera
I did mention the weight distribution and how well it handle for shooting handheld “especially when rigging”
The FX6 is a great camera. Enjoy. I am surprised you purchased on thought as I thought you open a Komodo? I bought both when they first came out. I had a good long while to use them before selling them. I sold them because I bought the Red Komodo and realized I had stopped teaching for the Sony and Canon. These days my quest is for something really small and capable that I can travel with. I picked up the Panasonic S5IIx and will do some shooting with it this weekend. It looks pretty good in studio, but outdoors is really going to be the main test for its stated purpose. We have major releases upcoming from Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic and Blackmagic. Interesting times.
The Komodo hardly got use when I owned the c70!

Had the R5c, such a huge letdown. Has nothing on neither the C70 or the FX6.
I got fed up with canon’s weird feature segmentation amongst their product line.
And Sony convinced me with the ergonomics and high request rate from production companies.

its interesting to see the c70s apsc sensor having better dynamic range than the full frame sony. full frame is not better automatically it seems-
“Better” is relative for most specs but yes, I do believe the c70s sensor is better overall
Because the DGO tech, C70 record both low and high gain output from the sensor for each frame, which is a bit simlair to HDR mode on smartphones, C70 uses dgo up to 60fps, after that the dynamic range will drop. Apsc sensor can outperform full frame in DR, but full frame has better low light performance, especially the sensor on FX6, it looks so clean at the second base 12800 iso, on par or slighty better than C70 at 6400 iso. FX6 also has better sharpness due to slight downsample from 4.2k to 4k, which is in a pretty good sweet spot, not overly sharp like some high mp sensor mirrorless cameras, but also not too soft, which many people complaint on the C70. Both sensor has their pros and cons. C70 has the internal raw advantage, but sony can record higher bitrate due to CFexpress card.
I’m in a debate on both of these cameras, the Canon has great recording options, something the FX6 really lacks but Canon has RF restricted which sucks. It really is quite a debate.
Yeah it’s definitely a back and forth. The RF mount wasn’t too much of an issue for me since I used EF lenses anyways.
The lack of IPB in the fx6 is actually extremely annoying
Great comparison video. I'll nerd out about it:
The C70 has a sensor of only 8mpx while Sony has a sensor of 12mpx (10.8 usable mpx) so it should be sharper than Canon.
Sony also lacks the OLPF present on Canon, which results in less or no moire/aliasing while costing a little bit of sharpeness. Again, explaining why it is significantly softer.
Although Canon yields a softer image, in my opinion it wins in the Image Quality category.
The reason is its DGO sensor with a Dual 14bit readout, combining an over and under exposed image with a ton of color, guving an organic image with a ton of dynamic range, downsampled to 10bit.
While Sony does only a single 12bit readout and downsample it to 10bit. It does better in low light and internal ND performance though.
The only camera capable of a (single) 14bit readout by now, that I know of, is the Fuji Xh2s.

Why are you comparing handeld between a naked camera and a full rigged one with cage, battery plate and vmount? You could add those to C70 too and call it even, cause if you put a l3ns in front of a naked fx6 it will be front heavy. Doesn't seem that fair to me.
I’ve used the c70 for almost 2 years. Ik how it feels rigged and stripped down and that’s where my statements are coming from.
Also, both cameras have a cage. The only difference is the v mount, which I’ve used for the c70 and the c70 still doesn’t feel great for handheld at all. The grip isn’t adjustable and way less ergonomic than the fx6 and the weight distribution is not the same.
The fx6 “naked” as you’re saying is actually way better feeling than any camera I’ve ever used.
FX6 feels amazing without cage.(My cage is still on the way😂) It doesn't feel front heavy with 24-70gmii. Even if it did, changing to a bigger BP-U battery will balance it back. The side handle is very comfortable to use. The footage is noticeably more stable tham my friends komodo rig, even tho the FX6 was lighter. FX6 also records gyro data, which can be used for stabilization in post with both the Sony catalyst browse or the free gyroflow software which also has a resolve plugin, you can get very stable and natual looking handheld footage with minimal crop on the FX6.
The images focus is a lot sharper than on the Canon.

Ughh I’m in the same boat. I really prefer the image of the c70 but the fx6 is just has too many other things going for it, and I think being in the Sony ecosystem is better long term.

My bugbear with many of these tech companies how the "marketing" people have separated the technical users from the device's engineers. That's always going on, but has reached a critical level. I believe part of the problem is the current economy. It's no longer growing so corporations are all pulling back on their informal commitments. I believe in 2019 you would have had a different experience. I also believe, if you have a problem with the FX6 Sony would do the same today. That doesn't mean I don't think you should have switched. You have to call out what you experience and let the market decide ultimately, by weighing you and others purchases.
My takeaway from your video is the C70 is no longer considered a "professional" product by Canon. It's a consumer device. The FX6 might not be one either. But "fool me twice" is not a good option for you ;) If no one does anything, nothing gets fixed. So thank you!

The colors I don’t care too much about since I’m using the phantom LUTs that correct it all but the difference in the roll off is definitely noticeable

Really good comparison! I’ve had the C70 since it’s release & use it to film nature & wildlife. I love it for exactly those reasons you mentioned but for wildlife sometimes you need a sharper image imo. It’s interesting that for my genre & documentaries the BBC tend to use Sony cameras like the PMW F55, FX6, FX9 & Venice so I’ve been sitting on the fence about moving to the Sony.
When my C70 had literally just come out of warranty it stopped working & Canon charged me £1000 for a replacement master board - they even charged me to fix their dodgy flip out lcd which I thought was meant to be free due to its design fault.
My C70 was in mint condition & hadn’t suffered any damage & is obviously well looked after & I thought Canon could’ve partially subsidised the repair to keep a customer happy but it’s not in their nature!
Anyway, I can certainly understand why you made the switch on those grounds, it’ll be interesting to follow your journey with the FX6!

From what I've seen, the BBC and National Geographic wildlife docs tend to use RED cameras (and usually with the famous Canon 50-1000mm). What productions have you seen the FX3 and FX6 on?
@@SeanNeale Hey Sean, sorry I meant more generally, news gathering, outside broadcasts etc. Certainly when filming shows like the RHS Chelsea Flower Show they use a Plethora of Sony cameras, although I didn’t mention the FX3. It’s interesting how many F55 they still use, they seem to have converted those to XQD cards presumably as it’s a more budget friendly media.
To my knowledge they still use the F55 amongst other bodies on the ‘Watches’ as well.
I appreciate on their Blue Chip productions the Reds are broken out …. I think their Natural History department has a pretty cool toy chest! 🤣
@@andyobrien6263 Ah yes, in wider broadcasting I guess there’s a whole slew of equipment being used (I have absolutely no idea about that tbh). I only commented because I’ve seen some industry rental houses saying they’ve been moving away from RED as more and more productions are opting to go with ARRI and Venices for their high end and BMPCCs on the lower end.

Any camera sold without a proper viewfinder is nothing but a toy as soon as you really work with it. No viewfinder is a nonsense.
For certain work…. I haven’t used a viewfinder in years and I’m doing paid client work regularly
I do believe you But I'd never would go and shoot a documentary in forest, desert, under the sun or anywhere without a viewfinder. When you are just you and a camera, no gimbal, people around, talking doing things and you'll never know what is going to happen,, the viewfinder is the only thing you can trust. To me, the c70 doesn't make sense. I have to buy expensive FF lenses to use on a cropped sensor. OR I can buy an expensive speedbooster which makes a heavy camera even heavier and fakes full frame.
All that plus an unfcomfortable handle that doesn't tilt, and mini-xlrs, is a no-go for me.
I'd rather stick with the c200 and c100II.
The c70s image is what does it for me
FX6 is a huge upgrade form the fs7 which was an absolutely terrible cam IMO. I think when it comes to the c70 things are close and is when preferences really make the difference.
The c70 is still a tick above in the color and image department, especially when considering the DR. Yes I know you can get similar dr out the fx6 but you still need to expose to the right to get a clean exposure for lut conversion. The fx6 though will rightly dominate in sharpness, resolution and low light as it should due to its sensor size and design. As for color you really have to go to the fx9 or above to get great color out of Sony.
Finally the fx6 is great for handheld but not for everything else while the c70 is mediocre handheld but works well for other setups. I prefer the dslr style body since it’s easier to transport.
Finally, I think the c70 has some really solid advantages in some other areas. Great battery life, multiple audio channels, cheap sd card media, more ND strength, and finally internal RAW. No recorders needed just a great raw codec built right in.

Not sure I agree on the fx9 comment or the “similar DR” as that’s not how the cameras work but I like the POV 💪🏼
Biggest issue for FX6 is no audio input on the body. But the electronic VND is super useful, and can actually make up for the dynamic range in some situation, for example, you can easily film a transition shot from indoor to outdoor with auto vnd and the camera will maintain correct exposure without changing aperture or shutter, and it also has no color cast, unlike traditional rotating vnd filters.

@@creativegreatsvisuals All the audio ports is on the top handle. If you remove the top handle for gimbal or steadycam, you will have to record audio on a seprate recorder.

C70 : More sublte gradient to shadow, better color by far, hard NDs, did I said Better Colors ? 'cause man... Even a C300 MK2 from 9 years ago, blows FX6 in terms of colors to me.
FX6 : FF from the get go, better AF, better Slow Motion, Vari ND (has it's strenght and weakness)
As much as FX6 is everywhere, I think their are lazy man cameras, and the Image Quality is not on par with Canon / Blackmagic / Red.
SIde note and personnal experience : both are way to light for good Handheld work without any IS. You need to rig them out to at least 6-7kg.

Well, for the color part. Canon is better out of the box. But FX6 can get pretty close with some grading or good 3rd party luts. The stock slog3 luts from Sony is just garbage😂.
Yeah it gets close, but highlight and shadow roll off are just better from Canon. Just my feeling, and yeah Sony should just hire a good colorist like Joel Famularo like what Blackmagic did with Captain HOOK.@@qiyuxuan9437
