- "It is no secret that conquering cultures peg themselves as ‘superior’ and denounce everything that came before them as an ‘age of darkness’. Equally true is the African proverb, “As long as the lions do not have their storytellers, history will always glorify the hunter”.
We Indians know intuitively that the history imposed on us is not our history at all. It is the history of invaders glorifying their invasions. And yet, for over 70 years of independence, we Indians have not managed to cleanse the biases of the colonial imposition of history on us. Sanjeev Sanyal makes a case for telling Indian history the way it happened to us - from the perspective of Indians.

Sir I am a part time teacher, I teach classes from 6-10. I personally love history a lot. I have seen many times that text books, perticularly pvt publishers Glorify the invaders, AKBAR THE GREAT, THE GREAT MUGHALS, THE TIGER OF MYSORE TIPU SULTAN etc. But nowhere I see our great Rajput kings like Maharana Pratap, Rana Sanga (who defeated Ibrahim lodhi), Rana kumbha (who never lost the war), Baji rao who defeated Mughals at Delhi and Bhopal. Why Qutub minar is called that it was built by Qutub ud din Aibak, since clearly one can see hindu symbols all over that mimar and in the complex. Alauddin tried to make one but can't, because he doesn't had that kind of architectural engineering to build that kind of minar. I request our government to History books needs to be written again.

With regards to Qutub minar. I am not an indian but had a chance to visit the said place in 2019. Its quite obvious that the layout, structure and materials used for the religious buildings in that area seem to have been salvaged from some hindu temple or building. One can even see parts of temple blocks, complete with hindu god images, being used as parts of d current religious buildings there.

India needs its true history researched by Indians. Not what the British conquerors have written. Remember conquerors write history to make them look good and to serve their agenda. The story of "Divyavadanam" are real or fictional, let’s see
Divyavadanam is a Sanskrit text containing divine stories. It is believed to have been written in the 2nd century. But if you look at the stories and places It seems to have been written in the 7th century or later.
What are these stories? Of these, 38 stories are very mythical similar to be in line with the ideology of “Mul Sarvastivism an sub cult.
It has an 11th story called "Ashokavadan". There is evidence that it was written from the 5th century to the 16th century. The story describes Emperor Ashoka's cruelity, his relationship with the Buddha Dhamma, and how he brutally murdered the Niganthas to promote Buddhism. Basically there is no historical fact in this. It describes the assassination of Ajivika by Emperor Ashoka. If Emperor Ashoka had killed Ajivik, would he have donated the first caves in India to Ajivik Sangh? Another example of these stories being fictional is that the Pushymitra Shunga (killer of the brahmadatta) is shown to be of maurya descent.
These stories will be suitable for fiction literature but not facts or that they will useful to know the right names for the places otherwise there are no proofs. In ancient time to deify any personality such stories were added in literature and this similar to that type.

Sanjeev Sanyal and Rajiv Malhotra are not academics. One is an excellent economist but a terrible historian and the second one is a source of a lot of conspiracy theories.
Romila Thapar and Irfan Habib are trained historians. I don't have a problem with right wing historians. Jadunath Sarkar and Arun Shourie have done some great work but these people like Sanyal and Malhotra are just conspiracy theorists. Add Swamy too.

If st Thomas visited south India during that time means then Christianity might have grew up atleast to some extent by 8th century AD. Adi sankara came in 8th century ( according to secularist historians who change his appearance date from time to do fit their narratives). So adi sankara recorded his arguments with existing indian culture of that time Hinduism Jain Bhuddhas. Why no arguments against Sikhs and Christianity even in 8th century AD? He even attended the Mughal Durbar of Aurangzeb as his loyal Mansabdar and was given Mughal honours. But he wanted more importance. His ego was responsible for his rebellion against the Mughals not his religion. Sivaji looked every inch the loyal Mughal mansabdar with his muslim style beard, his Mughal court costume etc etc .His later political philosophy of Hindu Pad-Padshahi was also based on Mughal style geo-politics.

For example, Manusmriti is put forth of as "the main and the only reason" for "castism " is actually a commentary by Kulluka Bhatta on the commentary by Govindaraja on Manav Dharma Shashtra despite the fact that more than 50 manuscripts of "Manusmriti" from different timelines have been found. So debates like this should be conducted the way they were conducted in ancient India.

I started questioning Indian historians when I read Greek history, especially pertaining to Alexander's invasion of India. We were taught in Indian history textbooks that he won against Porus(real name Pururaj) and then proceeded to forgive him his life. But when I read the Greek history, it clearly says that he was defeated really badly by Pururaj at the bank of river Indus and if anything, there was a stalemate and subsequently his armies retreated due to fear of other armies joining Pururaj in the battle.

As a student of history I deeply appreciate your nuanced balanced take on indian history. Thank you. True history evolves and thrives on different schools of interpretations. While it's difficult to be objective in history an ethical historian should consider all evidence and not pick and choose only the ones that suit their narrative. And above all be open to new evidence, scrutise them by all means but be academically honest and allow that original hypotheses may change.

Another thing I read recently is that Indians defeated Alexander and he was wounded by an army formed by city states in Sind. We only read about Alexander defeating Porus but not about the Indian city states wounding Alexander and making him turn back (and incidentally the wound is what killed him).
Even takshashila didn't have record s of alexander invation ...and even porus was a small king compare to other empires in india that time....

Some of the greatest kings who ever ruled India are from what is now southern India. Some of the dynasties ruled for hundreds of years not as tyrants but as great kings who were known for their religious devotion, respect for women, encouragement of arts and education, and great administration. The Chola dynasty is one such dynasty...they were known for their exceptional administration, benevolent rule, great navy that conquered Sri Lanka and religious tolerance. Women in the Chola dynasty were greatly respected and responsible for some of the greatest temples they have left for us today (The Tanjavur Temple), great irrigation works one of which supplies Chennai to this day! Their descendants are responsible for the building of the greatest temple Angkor Vat in Cambodia! From what I now know about Ashoka, he comes nowhere near these Chola kings in terms of greatness!

Brilliant talk. This is why I could never connect the dots between inscriptions on sites to my history knowledge/wikipedia. It leaves most Indians confused and we assume that there must be more going on that historians concluded a certain way. But this irresponsibility of most historians is not at all amusing anymore.
A british friend of mine once asked how does an Indian identify him/herself as an Indian; he meant how does one reconcile the complicated history and identify as an "Indian" alone - only recently have I started to find the answer for myself. It is sad that "truth" is so hard to find; the silver lining though is that it's not impossible. All it needs is an alert seeker.

To both of these the secular serfs had to render up the greater part of their produce including first go at their daughters and wives as demanded. This is the origin of the European caste system that the British introjected into India as well as the notion of “secularism” so beloved of aliens like Indira Gandhi.

During the Shukla Yajur Veda (Archery, chariot war fare and the harrying of the Druid Civilizations of Mesopotamia and Persia) Period there were two Varnas. Arya and Dasyu (Serf or Slave). The tall, fair, semitic, encycephalic, idolatrous, agricultural and archtiectural Shiva, Vishnu and Lalitha worshiping Druhyus (Druids) scattered from the Ur civilization to escape the constant harrying by the Aryas as well as their own apostates who had embraced Yahweh who said unto Abraham, "Put no other Gods before me for I am a jealous God". Some of them headed East and formed the Indus Valley civilization displacing the indigenous tribals. Some Aryas followed and settled in the Indo-Gangetic Plain and were bound by the treaty of Bharatha (a codicil to the main Constitution of Arya Varsha). They over laid the Druhyus and exacted tribute in the form of agricultural, architectural and other produce and services from the Dasyus. Here was born the joyous tones of the Krishna Yajur Veda from plenty and luxury. Here too were born the Varnas. The Brahmana, the Kshatriya and the Vaishya. The Varnas were decided by the Brihaspathi in the Pathashala. Then came the decadence of the Sama Veda. The Great Civil War (referred to in the masterly literary work "Mahabharatha" by Vyasa) decimated the Aryas and broke their hegemony. This began the Atharva Veda Period. Thereafter the Dravids and the Aryas began to inter marry. The Druid dieites were Sanskritized and the compendium of the Thaithreya Upanishad was created including the Druid deities for the use of all previous Vedas. The temple worship, architectural and agricultural technologies entered the Atharva Veda through the Aagama (that which came from outside) Shastras. The Dasyus entered the Guru Kula system as Shudras with full Varna mobility thereafter. The Druhyus already had a complex system of professional specializations as behooves an advanced civilization and this was verniered and integrated into the Varna system. The Vedic Period was brought to an end by Ashoka who destroyed the temples, dismantled the Guru Kulas and drove Brahmanism and Sanskrit under ground. He replaced the Swastika of Arya Varsha with his Chakra. With this, the Varna system ossified and education passed from father to son as Varna mobility was not possible without Guru Kulas. Many of the indigenous people as also the Dasyus never accepted Aryan Law and remained out side the Varna system. Many others who had been put into "Bahishkara" (open prison or exile) could not be reintegrated as the Ashwamedha Yajna when the laws were recodified and this took place were no longer conducted as Ashoka had ended Bharatha Varsha when he performed the Raja Suya Yajna (sacrificing the heads of the defeated Kings of the Sukla Yajur Veda period) instead of the Ashwamedha Yajna (consensus under Bharatha Varsha Krishna Yajur Veda). These were called Dalits by the British in 1921. The British wrongly gave the term "Dravid" to the indigenous people of India rather than the semitic Druhyus from the place of the three rivers (now known as the Euphrates, Tigris and Jordan) who brought agriculture and temple building to India.
The British did "Divide to Rule". They turned against the Brahmins after the Sepoy Muitny in 1857. Every Brahmin man, woman and child that they could lay hands on in the Bengal Presidency was massacred out of hand. In 1921 their "Dravid" stooges of the "Justice" Party were set against the Brahmins. False canards were spread against the Brahmins who had formed the impoverished (by culture and way of life dedicated to learning and trusteeship) hereditary priesthood, judiciary, and trustees of the "Hindu" commonwealth) to destroy the soul of Hinduism. The British coined the word "Dalit" for Non Hindus and made them "Hindus" in law to swamp the congregational temple welfare system. In the Madras Presidency, the British stooge Patro promulgated the Communal Gazetted Order 613 of 1923 to discriminate against Brahmins in all walks of life including education, employment, land ownership and court cases. The British then confiscated all the Heritage Temples and Religious endowments including the Veda Pathashalas. This policy has been followed ever since by the heirs and successors to the British and their "Dravid-Dalit" stooges. The Cambridge, Columbia, Oxford, Elphinstone, Presdiency, St Stephen’s and Madras Christian educated British stooges who usurped the rulership of India from the people in 1947 had no notion, whatsoever, of Indian tradition, History or Culture. In 1949, the Indian Republic, constitutionally turned Hindus into Third Class citizens and in 1959 confiscated all their temples, religious endowments and common wealth. The Indian Constitution was largely plagiarized from the British Government of India Act (1935) and included inequality under law, exceptions to the rule of law and the "Many Nations" Theory that rascals like Nehru, Ambedkar and their successors have expanded and strengthened leaving India a weakened nation, struggling below its potential, in a perpetual state of Civil War. India is 135 out of 172 nations (below Sub Saharan Africa) in Human and Social Development and 143 out of 172 nations in internal peace and stability. It is also the largest exporter of skilled Brain Ware that builds the might of the US and other "Western" Powers.
Dalit:
Until 1921, only those who adhered to Brahmanical Aryan Law were considered "Hindus". Hindu is a defunct nationality of religions adhering to common Aryan law though the name was coined by the Persians to refer to those who lived in the Indus Valley (present day Pakistan) at a time when both Persians and "Hindus" worshiped many common Gods and Goddesses. (The Vedai period that preceded the Avesthan period in Zoroastrian History). To break the back of Hinduism the British started many activities. In the Madras Presidency they coined the word "Dalit" and made them "Hindus in Law". Recognizing Brahmanism as the soul of Hinduism (until 1921, a Pandit used to be consulted by the Judiciary on Hindu Law) they abolished Hindu Personal Law, In 1923, their stooge the :Justice Party of Patro and Periyar promulgated the Communal Gazetted Order 613 to discriminate against Brahmins in all walks of life and took over the Temples, subverting the congregational temple welfare system. The Indian Political Service even infiltrated Sikhism at Sialkot and influenced Kartar Singh and Karag Singh to create the Akali movement and turn Sikhism away from the Hindus and against Hindus an adopt many Islamic beliefs and practices.
Shudras (the tall, fair, semitic, agricultural, temple worshipping and architectural Druids who brought civilization from Mesopotamia) were integrated into the Guru Kula system that decided the Varna on the basis of aptitude and skills in the Atharva Veda period after the Mahabharatha War destroyed Aryan hegemony and temple worship, architecture, agriculture etc entered the Vedas through the Aagama (that which came from outside) Shastras. Dalits were always outside the Varna system or are descendants of those who were made out castes for heinous crimes like Ashoka was for fratricide and could not be reintegrated (which happened during every Ashwamedha Yajna when the laws were re codified) after Ashoka dismantled the Temples and Gurukulas and brought the Brahmanical Shastras and Caste Mobility to an end together with the Vedic period. Thereafter, skills and knowledge passed from father to son. But Dalits were never Shudras who were caste Hindus. (Shudras were Dasyus during the Krishna Yajur Veda and Sama Veda periods when the Indo-Aryan extracted tribute from them in the form of agricultural and architectural produce before the Mahabharatha War. The Brahma worshiping Aryans, a motley set of nomadic, pastoral, war like races and tribes from Prussia to Mongolia were Rig Vedic and united under a common constitution and laws. They came to India in the transition from the Shukla Yajur to the Krishna Yajur Vedic periods and overlaid the Shiva, Vishnu and Lalitha worshipping Druhyus from the land of the three rivers (present day Tigris, Euphrates and Jordan)

What a coincidence! I just got this book, Ashoka: The Search for India's Lost Emperor, and was wondering why it has so little information on the Emperor himself.
It is 2021, and this talk by Sanjeev Sanyal in 2016 throws up a lot of disturbing issues:
1) That majority of educated Indians have no idea that Indian History taught in High school is garbage, doctored by Leftists to suit a socialistic irreligious agenda
2) That majority of educated Indians have no idea how History books are written and who in India writes them
3) That majority of educated Indians have been brainwashed into believing that Hindus Kings were no good
On the contrary, the general Indian public, especially the Hindus, are proud of the 'real' Indian history which is not taught in textbooks, and and that's how this narrative has survived. In the end, Truth will always prevail.
One of the Ashoka's stone inscriptions which will change the whole narrative is about Shudras. Ashoka in his inscription says that "He defeated 100000 thoroughly battle trained Kshatriays because he is not allowed to kill them he branded them as Shudras and subjected them to enslavement in his Sitamadis (kings farm fields)" - where does this leave us? It means that Sudras were Kshatriyas who were defeated in battles, the entire untouchability and everything related to the caste system is nothing but punishments carried out in brutal manner by Kshatriays against kshatriyas...

History in our school textbooks, which is what most Indians who go to school know about and nothing more, is a history that is told to suit the ruling ideology. Any relook at history based on recovered facts and cogent interpretation is therefore to be welcomed. After Bajirao, his first son, Balaji aka Nanasaheb, became Peshwa, and not his second son, Raghunath Rao [as the talk mentions]. It was under Balaji that Maratha influence was at its zenith in terms of territorial dominance, but that influence was not yielded by centralised powers, but by almost semi-independent chieftains like Shindes [Gwalior], Holkars [Indore], and Bhosales [Nagpur]; who were all brought to prominence by Bajirao. However, even this loose confederacy did not RULE [or Administer] over the large territory it dominated. In fact, it's rule was often rapacious in areas it did not control and directly administer; and was considered a blight.
You are right the later Maratha rulers hardly followed Dharma.
I guess the reason for this current perspective of history is because we don't have a bent for research. Marks are more important than learning. This is slowly changing and that is why we have people like Sanjeev Sanyal, Vikram Sampath and Bhardwaj are bringing out new facts. The biggest reason for this is the economic growth in the country. I believe this is only going to get better.
Revisiting Indian history is a must from our civilizational legacy point of view. Ironically few are interested or even willing to leave away the flawed and concocted side of Indian history that glorifies a certain view point and personalities. It is time the Govt sets up a panel to rewrite the Indian history from the perspective of a true Indian.
