    I use this exercise in kumite quite a bit. If I miss the roundhouse kick, most people would immediately move in for a counterattack, and that’s when I re-chamber and deliver the side thrust kick. It works well because people don’t expect the second kick and actually move in within range.

    Great explanation, we commonly have to do both kicks together from front stance without putting the foot down to demonstrate correct chambering.

    I'm trying to stretch but i'm strugling with my hips. I feel like they block me and I can't get any further because of that. Do you have any suggestions ?

      @jkgardiner  Před 7 dny +1

      It’s very difficult to suggest anything with seeing the problem, do you mean they are blocking you from stretching further? Or from kicking higher? Or something else?

      @@jkgardiner They block me from stretching further and thus I struggle to kick higher. But I don't know if it's genetics or if it's a step anybody have to overcome.

    • @jkgardiner
      @jkgardiner  Před 7 dny +1

      @@natoonstopmotions181 it is possible it’s just your hip structure but improvements can still be made either way, try to strengthen the abductors and adductors which should help in kicking higher. Flexibility in a stretch doesn’t carry over to high kicks necessarily without the correlated strength in the hip musculature.

    Which muscle parts do you think are most important in terms of stretching during the mawashi geri kick?

      Hamstrings, lower back (rotation) and adductors

    In dojo you see terrible execution of kick especially.
    I think for many its mobility issues and of course lack of pratise and lack of concentration when practising. Its "too late" if you just practise at dojo when you have passed lets say first half year in your karate career. Kicking is great since you can do it almost everywhere if you dont mind people straing you weirdly =)
    You have to do the thinking process, understand what the kick is about. Watch good kickers and try to replicate them, usually much lower than good kickers perform. Do mental exercising what is really happening in the kick and then try to execute it physically.
    Some people just look like its a desperate task to try to teach them to kick properly since it takes also genetic exposure to motor skills which I would say many lack but thats not the point of karate, you cant change genes (even some studies these days you actualyl can change yoru genes a bit or at least their action). Point is to kick better every month, every year, with your ability range. Truth is everyone cant be good kickers but everyone can be the best kicker they can be (by hard work) and you got the rest of your life to perform, just a bit better than last time.
