  • Season 3, Episode 11
    I wasn't expecting to have this episode turn out quite this way, in several different dimensions, but I hope that you find it enjoyable nonetheless. It was a fantastic experience! That I can say for sure. I was great to push my comfort zone a little further than usual. I can't say as I've felt that way since my initial training.
    Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

      Of the 5 instructors I had, if ANY one of them was even half as good as yours I for sure would have completed my commercial rating. I was so anxious all the time that I would be berated by my instructor that my mind wasn't on flying. I eventually quit with $140,000 in college debt to go with my useless Private w/IFR rating.

    • @Chrisamic
      @Chrisamic Před 3 lety +2

      @@5995Oblivion There's nothing "useless" about an IFR rating. You have my respect and if you really want to fly commercial you'll find a way. Get more experience and confidence, then *interview* potential instructors to find one that you can work with. We all make mistakes, and I would value one that can instruct without trying to score personal points very highly. Instructors have to try to see things from the student's point of view rather than their own fear and uncertainty, and that's a rare breed: qualities that are not tested for in suitability for a CFI rating.

    They have so much good equipment and aids in planes today. When I started my flight instruction in Sept of 1974 in a 150, all we had for aids was a VOR and our two eyes
    unless you were in a 172 that had a transponder. That was it. I sure wish we had the GPS back then. This is great video with very good instructor.

      I’m no pilot but in my humble opinion, the single, most impressive sentence in this entire video was, “Sorry, I was busy flying while you were talking.”
      I’ve only ever watched videos of other people flying-for now. But three words that keep coming up in those videos, and have been repeatedly beaten into my skull are, “aviate, navigate, communicate-“ in that exact order.
      I’ve also learned that ATC will often tell you what they “want” you to do. It is absolutely critical for every pilot to weigh what ATC “wants” against what you, the pilot, “need.” I’m sure we’ve all seen way too many tragic AOPA and NTSB videos about pilots who either didn’t assert themselves sufficiently, or when subjected to complex instructions or “task saturation,” were too embarrassed to ask ATC to simplify or clarify their instructions, and it cost them their aircraft, their life, or their passengers’ lives.
      I’ll definitely watch this video several more times. Also, major kudos to any FI who recognizes that a pilot is ready for additional training and offers it up, free of charge, simply because it might make the air safer for everyone.

By being in a very stressful situation you became a sponge and suck in the information he was giving you. You might not remember everything but if ever you found yourself needing to do this again you would not be so stressed. Very good CFI and very good BFR.

    Love the discussion at 18-20min about VFR into IMC and being able to tune an approach; I'm working on my CFI and its a debate I've had with several instructors. I see significant value in doing an "Intro to emergency-IFR for the soon-to-be VFR pilot" lesson that covers the basics of GPS, LOC/ILS approaches before or immediately after a PPL Checkride. I understand the idea of not wanting to overload your student and I wouldnt expect any student to memorize/learn it until they are going for their Instrument rating, but having a basic understanding or even just basic knowledge of the approach plate (MSA, frequencies, etc) without practice could save their lives.
    There are so many things I've learned latter in my piloting career (and it's not like I have thousand's of hours) that I wish I had known during my primary flight training... I include basic approach knowledge with flying a stall for an extended time especially through turns and a traffic pattern and doing significant-upset/spin training as things that the PPL syllabus and the instructors seem to eschew in favor of "immediate recovery" or "awareness" yet I've found knowing the quick basics of an instrument approach, the edge of my plane's slow flight performance, that a stall is not necessarily a "bad" thing and that I could get myself out of an unintentional (or intentional for fun) spin to have been incredible boosts to my awareness and avoidance of those situations.
    I suppose there is an argument that the boost might give a newly minted pilot a false bravado to take a risk they arent ready for I understand why instructors avoid them; they can be risky to begin with and even more so with a student pilot at the controls but I think the instructors do their students a disservice.
    I flew with an instructor just recently for a rental checkout and she was so nervous because I could and would take the plane to the edge of the performance envelope and back... She absolutely hated my approach speeds and didn't seem to understand where the 65 kts book speed was derived from. It was like she thought we'd stall and fall out of the sky at any second... Of course she was probably a newly minted CFI and didn't have many more hours than I do; she certainly didnt have the variety of experience.
    I've also argued the proper response to a DPE telling you your "ipad just died now what" is to tune 121.5 (or whoever you may already be talking with) and declare an emergency (at least when you are unable to continue with your flight plan). The regs only require you to carry one set of charts, they permit an EFB as adequate and while paper might not have a battery life but it is prone to its own failures (tears, spills/stains, flying out the window, under the seat, etc.) and at night a paper chart is just as unreadable without a flashlight as your now dead iPad.

We just did a few take offs and landings, and navigated to one airport and back, and that was it. I have been under the hood before, and I seem to do very well like you did here. My previous instructor would have me put the hood on before departure, and lower it down as we climb out. I did nearly my whole flight review under the hood, navigating to 3 airports over a Michigan great lake, and an ILS approach at the end. He retired, and I miss being challenged... What a great video, if I was ever to learn how to fly, I would seek either of you out,
    Intellectual, calm , logical decision making .
    Impressive when student states he had practiced verbally, the different oral commands, and jargon.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this longer format video, I wouldn't mind seeing more of these. I'm not a real world pilot, just a flight simulator guy, but even I learned something out of this about recovering from stalls. Between yourself, FlightChops and Josh Flowers, I enjoy flight videos a lot due to the professionals showing us their stuff.

    Great video! It gave me a general insight into what a BFR may include. I can say instrument training can get intense with approaches and challenging with coms. Keep learning and practicing those approaches and you'll get your instrument rating without a problem.

  • @mrmorphic

    Great video! This is really rich in content, and useful for me as I'm about 3/4 way through PPL. I had always wondered what it is like to do instrument landing, and the instructor comments really reinforced the usefulness of IFR rating. Various people I've spoken to have said they won't do IFR because of the currency requirements, but it always seemed to me that in an emergency who really cares if you're current; if you know how you massively increase your survival chances.
    Also, kudos for putting up a video where you're outside your comfort boundary (which is me on just about every flight). Its a good reminder that we all have to keep some humility and keep learning.

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran Před 6 lety +1

      Mark, do you know what the currency requirements are? I just looked it up. In a period of six months, you must do six approaches, holding procedures, and intercepting and maintaining courses through the use of a navigation system. Under 61.57.1.c, it says "performed and logged under actual or simulated instrument conditions." You would need to clarify with an instructor if that means IMC, or just flying an IFR flight plan. Furthermore, what amount of IMC do you need? If you are on top at 5,000' and descend in IMC to 3,000' on an instrument flight plan, and then pop out while you're on approach, does that count? The rules are somewhat vague, but a couple of hours with an instructor ever six months, or a little less twice in that period to keep you current, certainly doesn't sound like a terribly horrible thing to me.

    • @mrmorphic
      @mrmorphic Před 6 lety

      Hi Gary. I'm in New Zealand so the requirements may differ. I think the thing that puts many recreational pilots off here (that I've spoken to) is the requirement to have done 3 instrument landings via published procedures every 3 months, as well as 3 hours instrument time. It sounds similar on average to what you're saying. I guess if you're flying frequently, that's probably fine, but if you're flying a couple of times a month like some of the recreational pilots, that's one third of your flying to maintain a rating.
      I've seen a mentality here that I don't understand which is to cheap out on things. e.g. there are some high hour (for rec) pilots that don't file a flight plan cross country, saving like $20 or something, but meaning that search and rescue are not covering you. Or avoiding flight following. In the terrain we have here, plus a fair amount of cross-water, this seems like nickel & diming on the wrong things. And we don't even use nickels or dimes :-p

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran Před 6 lety

      Mark, hello to that part of the planet. I don't want to say 'Down Under' because you might think I think New Zealand is a part of Australia or something, and I do know better than that. :)
      I'm not sure what a Recreational Pilot in NZ is, the one we have here would not be allowed to fly in IFR conditions at all.
      www.aopa.org/advocacy/advocacy-briefs/quick-comparison-of-pilot-certificates
      I'm thinking your Rec pilots are more like our Private Pilots with an Instrument or Multi-Engine (or both) ratings.

    • @mrmorphic
      @mrmorphic Před 6 lety

      Ha, yes, there is some rivalry :-) We have similar divisions between rec (RPL), PPL, sport, CPL etc, with some differing parameters. Of the people I've been training with, they are all going for PPL but most of them are flying recreationally under PPL. I think the restrictions on RPL here include no IFR, no night, and only 1 passenger. I suspect more people would only apply for an RPL if the passenger limit was raised to 4. I believe CAA (NZ equiv of FAA) are reconsidering this at the moment, as well as medical requirements, since there isn't any data supporting increased risk for RPL pilots that can't get PPL.
      Where abouts are you? And do you fly?
