"Ray's one-way runway" - Challenging Hawaiian Flying in an Ultralight

- Season 3, Episode 1
While staying on the island of Hawaii, I was fortunate enough to meet up with several aviators during my week there. From helicopters, to 717's, Diamonds, and ultralights, it was quite the adventure. I had told myself that I was never going to get into the habit of flying ultralights, but I have to say, this trip made me realize that it's a whole different type of flying, and a very attractive type, at that. A big thanks to Farmer Ray for taking me around your property, and further inspiring me to dream big.
Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

Sorry the video is a couple hours late today. I went flying all day yesterday when I should have been inside editing video, but can you blame me??
THUMBS UP FOR FARMER RAY!!
NICE!! Anybody that has an airplane and their own private airstrip in their yard is living the dream!
I know!! I told Ray that I think he's come as close to paradise as anyone I've ever met so far.
Michael B. ... to say nothing of being in hawaii!
breakingthemasks Yes! you're right (thumbs up) Hawaii is cool, but did I mention this guy has his own private airstrip!!!
I would imagine you could land and take of in a couple hundred ft easy
Good job Ray! John & Marcia back in the Mainland USA, miss you guys!
Great Video. The Hawaiian Islands flying is one of my bucket list items!
It was really delightful. Godspeed! :)
Fun to see Farmer Ray still enjoying flying.
What an amazing person :)
Nice video! Lovely part of the world to explore by air! I began my Sport Pilot training w/ an instructor in South Dakota, who had a FlightStar IISC, w/ the HKS engine option. Even w/ only 60HP, we'd climb quite smartly from the 3200' field elevation to around 5-6000 feet to practice (depending on how cool/warm the day was). Very easy to fly; cruised at 65MPH; steep turns were a blast! Finished up my training in Ohio, in a CTLS, also a very sweet-handling plane...I worked on landings about the most; they love to float on down that runway! Thanks for posting!
That's awesome thanks for posting this video
Too cool guys! I fly a phantom x1. Love the scenery!
Amazing video. Pls more stuff like this. THANK YOU FOR SHARING!
You're in luck, because there is more on it's way this summer!! :D
THAT is flying for fun. Thank you for sharing that great video.
My pleasure :)
Ray seems a very pleasent person . Greetings from the Netherlands!!
Great private runway & good time flying!
This is my favorite ultralight video.
Take care,
Be safe.
Too cool! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed :)
Great video, sweet camera angles. Nicely done Ray!
Glad you enjoyed :)
Awesome ! thank you Sir
What a cool opportunity. Thanks for sharing.
Glad I could share!
Thats gotta be so fun and amazing and scary and something my mom would never do!
Haha it actually felt way safer than I was expecting!
Awesome video. I used to fly into Hickam AFB, Oahu with the A/F almost every other week, many, many years ago. I sure do miss it. Very different flying around the Pacific islands. Thank you for bringing back memories. Fly Safe & God Bless!!
Glad I could make you smile!
Great video FSF. happy landings.-
Same to you, my friend :)
Wow I think that was the coolest flying I have seen.
Me too ;)
Really good recording of the mics!
What a flight beautiful.
Lovely!
I love this kind of turf grass 👍🏻
Fantastic flight. Perfect for Hawaii
No better way :)
*I loved the ocean view in the beginning because I saw a lot*
greetings from Oregon. i'm 54 yrs old and all young life I been told I can't get a pilot's license due to being hard of hearing. When I was 25 I was then told differently by an FAA agent....just so long I don't flying radio airspace. NOW..with kit planes and ultrallights to paramotor gliders...my dream will....WILL come true! Paramotor gliding seems more cost effective but I rather have an ultralight amphibian. Working on achieving that dream. Thanks for sharing this fun video.
Good for you!!! If you're at all in the area, there is a deaf pilot convention held at Katama Air Park on Martha's Vineyard annually. You would be the least deaf one there!! :D
got anything held on the West coast?
john wayne if you have enough hearing to pick apart a radio transmission, idk what's stopping you
John, I attended a presentation for deaf and hard of hearing pilots at Airventure, Oshkosk in 2016. A lady from Los Angeles did a very nice presentation and I did not know about a deaf and hard of hearing pilots assosiation until then. It was very interesting to learn that there are commercial pilots that are 100% deaf. Check out this link ... www.deafpilots.org/ ... there's a lot of this kind of thing on Google. Go for it.
Hey Braddah, remember me? I was born and raised in Hawaii. Born in Honolulu, raised in Pearl City on Oahu. 8 generation Hawaiian/Puerto Rican. I have family all over the islands, including the Big Island. Nice to see some footage of back home! Aloha ke Akua!
what an amazing man and plane! i would love to fly with you to :-D keep going!
The perfect person to convince me to go ultralight flying!
I need to go to Hawaii now! Great video Nick!
It was spectacular :)
Triple thumbs up.. I wish i would have found Farmer Ray when the wife and I was out there last August. Stayed on the Big Island for a week and couldn't get in the air. Great vid as always.
Yeah, there's not a ton of aviation on the Big Island, which I find really strange for a series of islands...
Flying ultralights in Hawaii is an idea that has come up again and again in my flight sim flights, looks like a lot of fun! Congrats on your graduation!
Thanks, mate! I'm still thinking of where I might use your great voice on my channel ;)
Beautiful flight guys 👍😎
Glad you enjoyed :)
Lol, i love your reaction when he says, "oh btw, well, i shouldn't scare you" haha.
Nice scenery great vid.
Thanks, great video!
Glad you enjoyed :)
when the left seat asks if you want to go up again you say YES!
great little plane
That ultralight looks like fun! Around San Diego we have an a2a freq, like their Island freq. 122.75. You prefix your call with coastal, east, north and south. Great video!
Hm, neat. Your airspace is so congested down there, it scares the crap out of me!
Great video!
Thanks, mate :)
Excellent !
Success! :)
Absolutely gorgeous! Yep, wouldn't want a strong tailwind on that landing!!
Even at a high weight, we still had so much runway, though!
That's true. If you call a kite with a lawn mower engine attached "high weight" LOL! (but I get what you're saying). Loved you reaching out to touch the tires and the strut. Looked like you were having the time of your life! Good for you!
Really good video with good chat in the plane
Glad you enjoyed :)
LOVELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It 'twas :)
gracias por compartir belleza de panorama
Incredible and beautiful just awesome view of the land and sea the water is wonderful job.Thank you so much for your videos and channel too greatly appreciate it
I do the best I can for you guys :)
Friendly Skies Film your welcome And still awesome videos too greatly appreciate it too... and beautiful too..
Hawaii is beautiful.
Nice landing 👍
Very Cool Video.
Thanks, mate :)
Love this video, Farmer Ray is a very cool guy. My favorite part is where he discovers he has plenty of fuel in mid air...lol! awesome!. Also, one chance landing with no go around, now that's a commitment right there. Keep flying Farmer Ray! and thanks for sharing FSF. Hope to see more.
He was so great to me! Glad you enjoy my adventures :)
Amazing video!!!
Thanks, mate :) Enjoy your trip soon.
Fantastic video! I love the FlightStar! It looks like it flies in the same speed range and with the same characteristics as my plane (Beaver RX 550) I'm not sure if I'd trade in my Beaver for a FlightStar, but I'd definitely be tempted! :-)
Nice ride...
Nice 👍
WOW you guys this video made my day! That is life, I would love to be friends with that gentleman you were with! good person to know and fly with in Hawaii, but I wanna fly one also, maybe we need a group of these kinda like a flying high wing!!! I LOVE IT!!!
I don't think I could have hoped to meet anyone better on the whole island, to tell the truth. That seems to be the case wherever I go. Those who are worth knowing in aviation will make an impression that you're unlikely to forget for your entire life. I treasure the moments that have brought us together over this great hobby :)
Pretty cool
Awesome. I have to admit I am a bit jealous though :( . But at least we have our own islands here in New England!
It was super fun :) The islands have their own draws, but this ain't no Martha's Vineyard :)
Real Stick and Rudder stuff!
Great Video.
You both very funny and entertaining 😁
*sigh* So jelly.
Havn't had a stick in my hands for 15 years. I want something like this one day.
That looks like so much fun! Wow, what an experience. On a side note, if you ever visit KTKI in McKinney, I'd love to see your piper warrior! I'm not a pilot (yet), just an enthusiast.
Glad you enjoyed. I'll let you know! :D
Lol it looks like u shat bricks when he said there is no go around..only 1 shot lool...awesome video bro..loved it
Oh, I was well aware XD
The most amazing video i have seen
Glad you enjoyed! :)
Do they have classes on building those things?
EAA might, you can check their website. They would at least be the ones at a local airport who might help connect you with an expert in the community.
You're awesome!! It amazes me that a guy with well over 35,000 subscribers and several thousand views replies to little Ole me.... And so quickly too. Flying has always been a dream of mine. I initially wanted an icon a5 but im just a cheerleader and that doesn't pay so well. Then i saw farmer Frank and this video, and thought - wow! I would LOVE his life. I also picked up a flight book... Who knows? Cheerleader today, Pilot tomorrow?
Hey, it's all about the community :) I know people who have had crazier transitions in their lives! I've done some speaking at vocational schools before about pilot careers, but the fact is that flying is so different from anything else, and so intense, that anyone from any background can become a pilot if they love flying. If there's every anything I can do for you, don't hesitate to shoot me an email via the form on my website.
In this video Mr. Friendly takes a trip out of his normal climate, where the air is lighter and so are the planes! Curiously enough he was worried about the landing but not about how reliable a reduction gearbox is on an experimental aircraft...
I was waiting for your comment!! :D I'm definitely pinning them from now on. I'll go back and find all your previous ones too.
But seriously, that gearbox, makes me nervous.
The Diamond TwinStar (DA-42) has reduction gearboxes but they have to be replaced every 300 hours.
It does!? How about the DA-40?
The DA-40 does not.
The Rotax gearboxes are very reliable. I have an older A model (made in 1987) on my Rotax 503 and it hasn't failed yet. As long as the proper maintenance is done on them, they work very well.
Some of the best aircraft engines have gearboxes, including the RR Merlin. I haven't heard of any Rotax gearbox failures.
Класс! Спасибо!
Nice video, well done, beautiful way to see the Island....
are volcanoes mountains?....think of Mt. Saint Helens
I wonder how much altitude you need for the parachute to be effective?
the more air speed the sooner it deploys ?
Ah! Good example, and good question! I gather with thee pyrotechnically deployed chutes, it's very, very fast.
Good I feel as am the one in it keep it up men wow
re warmup - My old Rotax 582 manual said to wait until the coolant was at 140 F then take off.
I miss your videos! Hope all is well with you
Great video, Thanks! I have a Flightstar, it is a great little airplane, You should try to get a ride in a gyrocopter, ( I fly one also) you would like that experience.
I lived in Hawaii before I was into flying, it would be a great place to fly.
Thanks again for posting this.
Funny. Someone else I met up with on that trip was building a gyrocopter. They do look like fun :)
Esp with Gyrocopter Girl ;)
Guy has a awesome personality. Would love to fly with him. Is that the big Island?
Wow so beautiful there...too bad you didn't ask him about wind conditions, how often he can fly, average winds etc...it seems to be forever windy there... thanks!
👍👍👍
Awesome! Will my longboard fit in there?🤙 Have you thought about buying a couple of the automatic inflatable PFDs for you and your passenger to wear for water flights? Not a bad idea, especially where the impact could render you unconscious. Sorry... not just a long boarder... I’m a Firefighter/Paramedic and Public Safety Rescue Diver as well. 😉 Thanks for posting!
you are so awasome
In caso di piantata motore sareste finiti dritti in mare, complimenti!!
That was a treat!! I'm hoping to do training for a Sport pilot ticket some point soon. What aircraft was that ?
Flightstar SCII. They don't make them any more. It is a kit plane.
Amazing video. Flying in Hawaii must feel like your on cloud 9.
Dream would be to move to Hawaii and fly helis doing island tours for tourists.
Too bad I live in cold rainy England.
Fly safe
All the helicopter pilots I met down there doing exactly that seemed to be the happiest people on earth. I'm leaving New England for Florida and the Bahamas because I can't take the misery up here anymore. JOIN MEEEE!!! :D
im already packing my bags. see you there
But seriously, though. I can't wait to be there for the first winter. It's going to be such a nice feeling.
I'm a snowbird!!!
wow that strip
One of the best UL in the world
I certainly enjoyed it :)
Narrator: Fun fact, there's no open container laws for airplanes....
My response: Wait, what!!!
There is a regulation saying a civil aircraft can’t carry passengers who appear intoxicated so there’s that. Certainly would be asking for trouble from the FAA if they caught you.
that looks a little sweet plane to fly..
cool.....:-)
what is the brand name and model of the microlight?
I think you should find Swayne Martin while you are on Hawaii :D
B10S just do low approaches over the beach looking for a white Jeep and you'll probably find him and Haley down there eventually lol
I tried to!! It was right when he arrived, so I gather he was busy, but he never responded.
If it was right then he was probably very busy with ground school from his videos
Ayyy i have the same song in the beggining in one of my videos
What will be inside this glidder
TK !!!
A brother of a friend has offered flights up in his ultralight for years. I still haven't gone up. I'm still not sure if my fears are based on him or the plane, lol (hey, watch how a man goes through a divorce, and you'll know immediately whether or not you'd go up in a plane with him). If I could choose my first ultralight experience, Hawaii sounds incredible! Thanks!
Haha sounds like you have a great judge of character!
That was mad cool. Do you really feel the wind blowing you in an ultralight?
You feel up/down drafts in a big plane too, that one was just crazy!
Friendly Skies Film by the way. I found a Groupon for an hour lesson in Fitchburg. Taking a couple lessons when I take a week off shortly. Will let you know how it goes.
just a heads up these are typically 30 minutes of ground school and 30 minutes in the air to decide if you want to start learning to fly.
Are you talking about a typical discovery flight?
Beautiful plane...I have a friend who bought one a couple years ago and he has still not been up in it!!!
I am new to aviation and I have a question. Is this considered a ultralight or an experimental?
Anyone know where you can get a ride in an ultralight in northern California?
So why are you in Hawaii? Beautiful video.
Just on a little vacation after Graduation :)
CONGRATULATIONS !!! Do you need a special license to fly dragging a banner? "I'm outa here." What's your plans, you've discussed before? You're mechanical engineering, yes? FT flight instructor? Keep working on your pilotless plane design? Ahhh, nevermind, it's summer... enjoy a few weeks. Oh... you are.
I live the next property over from Ray. This is Pepeekeo Hawaii.
Pretty sure two place aircraft aren't considered ultralights in the USA? I think it's an LSA...
That is correct, and it requires an Light Sport Pilots License.
I thought so. There seems to be a mindset that if the aircraft is lightly built, it must be an ultralight. This video is not better informing anyone of that fact.
Right. The FAA separated these "light" aircraft into two categories. Part 103 and Light Sport.
Part 103: (Today known as Ultralight no license req)
(a) Is used or intended to be used for manned operation in the air by a single occupant;
(b) Is used or intended to be used for recreation or sport purposes only;
(c) Does not have any U.S. or foreign airworthiness certificate; and
(d) If unpowered, weighs less than 155 pounds; or
(e) If powered:
(1) Weighs less than 254 pounds empty weight, excluding floats and safety devices which are intended for deployment in a potentially catastrophic situation;
(2) Has a fuel capacity not exceeding 5 U.S. gallons;
(3) Is not capable of more than 55 knots calibrated airspeed at full power in level flight; and
(4) Has a power-off stall speed which does not exceed 24 knots calibrated airspeed.
Light sport: (LSA Pilots license req)
Max. Gross Takeoff Weight: 1,320 lbs (600 kg) or 1,430 lbs for seaplanes (650 kg)
Max. Stall Speed: 51 mph / 45 knots CAS
Max. Speed in Level Flight (at sea level In the US Standard Atmosphere):138 mph / 120 knots CAS
Seats: Two (max.)
Engines / Motors: One (max. if powered.)
Propeller: Fixed-pitch or ground adjustable
Cabin: Unpressurized
Fixed-pitch, semi-rigid, teetering, two-blade rotor system, if a gyroplane.
Landing Gear: Fixed (except for seaplanes and gliders)
