Grew up in Whitley Bay, went to Whitley Bay Grammar School 1966-70. Was a fantastic town to grow up in, the Spanish City was the centre of life back then!

So very sad... whatever has become of our country? I wasn't born until 1991 - I used to love trips to the seaside in my childhood, but I see now that I was born thirty years too late! Even so, the seasides have continued to decline - there's hardly anything left there for my nephews and nieces and I know if I ever have children the joy of a trip to the seaside will be nothing but a distant memory. Tragedy. Oh, what I'd do to turn the clock back and step into those old photographs!

Lovely film and nice to see my home town of Whitley Bay on CZcams.
I realise the video is over 10 years old now and you have to admit W/Bay was looking pretty run down in ceretain areas, but thankfully there have been vast improvements, especially to the sea front and the Spanish City.
@1:12 Wow, that pool in Tynemouth looks fantastic .. a far cry from the shambles it looks now although I think there are folk trying to raise funds to restore it.

So sad. I remember Whitley Bay in the '40s and '50s, it was such an exciting place in the summer and very staid and respectable during the rest of the year.

There's as much of Tynemouth as there is of Whitley Bay here. I worked on the shuggyboats, wheel roundabouts and boats on Whitley sands in the 1950s. At least they've made a start on the regeneration of the Spanish City. Hope it's not too late.

Wonderful pictures. I used to holiday every year with my gran since 1972 then my moved back in 1984. Her funeral was yesterday at St georges cullercoats at the end if Tynemouth Longsands. I love to visit Whitley Bay and Tynemouth but sad seeing what has become of Whitley. I hope they do invest much needed money but the world is in a such a mess I doubt it.

Thanks so much Dave, your images jarred me into remembering my childhood, how lucky we were...still remember the first theatre show I went to at that big beach building, a pant of Puss in Boots, and at the age of 3 thinking even then wasn't it strange that there were cross-dressers on stage, as somehow the male lead was an attractive girl!
and also in that building, the gaming arcade with photos of stars even I didn't know, like Gina Lollobrigida...

Crazy to see how much Whitley has changed over the years. Spent a lot of my time as a kid in the arcades back when it was a bustling weekend/holiday destination, then when old enough to drink The Avenue was our local. Really sad to see how run down the place got for a good few years. Although spruced up, it'll never be the same, which is a shame. So many memories.

    How sad!
What a shame. They should have kept Spanish City as an amusement park, but a classy one, like a mini Tivoli Gardens. Whitley Bay doesn't know what it is anymore. The town centre is a dump.
Tynemouth is still lovely though. Thanks for the video.

  • @gnomely1
    @gnomely1 Před 12 lety +1

@andreajones2007 I was growing up in Whitley Bay then and have such wonderful memories of the town. We were lucky to know the place then when it was a good place to live. I don't know what it is about Whitley but it evokes such nostalgia in people who grew up there and knew it then. I went back ten years ago and was saddened to see the deterioration but there was still the ghost of the past in some places and I felt a great fondness for those days half a century ago. I wish you peace.

Having cycled up the East coast, last year, through Hunstanton, Skegness, Withernsea, Scarborough, Whitby, Redcar, etc, Most of the coastline is like this, now. Why go on holiday here, when you can jump on a plane and be in sunny costa-whereverville for a few hundred quid?
Having said that... get a sunny day, during the school hol's and Tynemouth Haven, Long Sands and Cullercoats Bay are packed.
The gaming arcades will never return because of consoles and mobile phones and the remaining clusters of one-armed bandits are making two-penny gamblers out of everyone! The new idea for restaurants in Whitley Bay is a step in the right direction, I think, but without one, big attraction (at least), it'll not get people coming back. I really hope it works, though. I've just moved back to the North-East! :)

A good portion of this clip has absolutely NOTHING to do with Whitley Bay! It concentrates chiefly on the outdoor swimming pool at Tynesmouth. Tynemouth is not Whitley Bay!! Moreover some of the shots of the Spanish City amusements are from the 1920s! This video is NOT what its title says it is!
