Building a school on the old fairground site was the final nail in the coffin for Whitley Bay as a family resort. Its all about 'culture' and 'retirement' now.

Fond memories of what I remember to be our first holiday. All the way from the west of Scotland.

Great memories of this place from my childhood came here most Summers during the 1970`s,we always stayed at Feathers Caravan site.Especially loved the Spanish City parts in this video as 1976 was one of the years we were there, just how I remembered it all & seeing the Leisure Pool again was also brilliant as this Pool was way ahead off its time in 1976.Another memory is going to Blyth Market on the Friday before we went home.Went a day trip to Whitley bay in 2010 & was saddened & shocked at the decline of the Town ......so very sad too see

Working on the Ghost Train in the 70s - great money and met some interesting characters!
It is great to see all the recent investment, a renaissance is underway!

I started working there on Good Friday, 1976. Talk about a baptism of fire. Incredibly busy, long days but a great experience. One I'll never forget.

Grew up in Shields when the gut was full of trawlers and hundreds of guys filleting outside and those crazy three wheeled 2 stroke trucks. That's such a great soundtrack of paul Davidsons midnight rider which takes me right back to a very hot summer of 76. Very good times though we had very little money.

The great mark knopfler wrote about his experiences here on "tunnel of love" from dire straits "making movies" album, local lad too has happy memories from his upbringing and related it marvelously in the song!! Have a listen folks, if you are not familiar with the song, you can hear it on CZcams of course!

Whitley bay lost its character in the 80s and was derelict by the 90s the sea front looks nice now I guess put the town itself is dead all closed shops and the nightlife is a distant memory in history shame really.

I remember Whitley Bay like this .(.just) ...but the quality of the film makes it look a hundred years old not 40 ! time passes quickly and the colourful folk especially the annual pilgrmage from Scotland have all long gone and the place is definately worse off for that .
