I had a buddy of mine who put an mi-16 engine in a 205 with throttle bodies... Jesus that thing wheelspan in every gear bar 5th. Doin 80 in 4th then stamp on the gas, and you were wrestling that steerin wheel like your life depended on it lol. Lovely drive. Many thanks for sharing

I had the 405 8V back in '90. Marvelous car for durability, sport driving and gas mileage and just plain good car. Your stretch driving over the crest of the road and not being able to see ahead reminded me of a 9:30p drive one summer night when I had my dad's 220Sb 4 door out on a similar black top in the farm lands outside of town. The dips in the road were more severe. I was going too fast having fun with that airborne feeling you get on such roads where when the car landed you could feel the tires waver. I came over the hill top at speed and all I could see was the reflection of about 8 cows' eyes looking at me in the dark. I hit the brakes hard and stopped just in time. They just stood there and looked at me like, "Moo?" The cows were loose in the road from a nearby farm. Luckily I gave the car back to my dad in one piece; very quietly and Never drove like that again, night or day!! Sometimes we are just plain lucky in this world. Another time, in my teens driving in farm lands after a hard rain, I came over the rise at 60mph and there was the lowest part of the road with about 5-6" of rain and the 180D front end was in the edge of the right hand side ditch and I had a fraction second to figure out what to do. I could feel a little drag on the steering wheel and the rear tires were still on the pavement. With no power steering I decided to try and find a little steering to the left to gain traction of those 13" Ireland radials and gradually work my way back on to the road with the tires bouncing a bit from the ditch. A little more to the left and I suddenly felt the front end true up and I came back into the lane by the top of the hill. No other car with 50/50 balance could have done that other than the '57 180D. On pure ice roads up in S.D. that car just walked away from others on the road. I don't want to write about the Honda CBX experiences; I don't want to let anyone know I was that stupid.
@@autosnob Me Dad and I drove from St. Louis south to Laredo and then to Monterrey and on to Mexico City back in early '70's in the 304. We went up into the mountains north of Mexico City and the high compression motor of the 304 that took premium gas was limp at 12,000-14,000 feet elevation (everyone was passing us on the road). One place up the mountains was so high you would take 5 steps and get tired; there were translucent little fish in the lake and goat farmers were blocking the road. I had the luggage rack on top with an extra 145-14 tire just in case. He was driving late in the day on one stretch and in the distance in our lane was a string row of 5" rocks (painted white) across our lane. No road signs or anything to mark the excavation tench across the lane. I yelled out from the reclining passenger seat, "ditch" but it was too late and Dad almost flipped the car trying to miss the trench. The damage was a bent right front rim with the inner tube bulging out between the rim and tire bead; the tube tire had saved us from an accident in the middle of nowhere. We drove on to Saltillo and found a tire repair shop that could speak Spanish (humour). I took the bent 3 lug gray rim from the roof and showed it to them and the 3 or 4 men in the shop shook their heads. "no bueno" was the comment they echoed. I grabbed a 4-5 lbs hammer and started bending the rim back to a circle and they were impressed with the gringo's direction. When I got tired of hammering two of the men would take over. Progress was slow and we straightened the rim good enough to use just in case. I had thought there would be Peugeot dealers in Mexico but not. We drove to Mexico City and rested 2 days and then on to Orizaba with Popo on our right and to Veracruz coming back up the Gulf to Tuxpam and Tampico. I ate a steak dinner in Tampico and got dreadfully sick-I wanted to die. San Luis Potosi was also beautiful. Just a little 5,000 mile run in the 304.

I had the 180D-'57 on my second year going to SDSU and would drive the 650 miles route from mid state MO up to Brookings through the beautiful corn fields of Iowa, then, over to Council Bluffs. That 180D could go 70mph but took a while to get up there. The roads were black top and narrow and hilly in that run of Iowa. Being a junior behind the wheel I came up behind a semi with a load of steel on the bed. He was going rather slow due to the rain on that fall day. I attempted to pass in one of the dips of the road and the vision was not good. I pulled into the left lane and kept accelerating. There in front was a 55-60 years old man with a hat on in a Ford station wagon looking straight at me-eye to eye! I did not have time to say words, XOXOXOXOX. I jerked the wheel quickly to pull back in and was relieved that I made it. My stomach felt funny and tight. "Boy, that was close" I kept saying to myself. Drove on a few miles and then noticed it: the Mercedes radiator emblem was on its side; I had pushed it over when hitting the undercarriage of the trailer. Boy, that was close. Never did tell Dad about that one.

@@autosnob It was amazing, it was tuned and rechipped by BRS Racing, Nothamptonshire. I found that initially, based on driving other cars, you felt the need to change gear way before you needed to in the Mi16. It was Alhambra Red Mica colour.
Reminds me of the spirit of a MK2 16v GTI. I really liked these. They were seldom purchased in the USA. I recall a used car mechanic speaking of the terrible electrical system. I imagine parts are difficult. Still want to drive one!.
I owned for 3 years and had no electrical issues. I imagine that by this point in time any electrical gremlins in these have been sorted through already.

And ok, given that you can source parts, although maybe not without some waiting for shipping if they're coming from Europe, how feasible would it be to daily drive a car like this? And would it be difficult to find a good example these days? I'm assuming it is. I'd like a Euro spec example that I could import or one that's already imported. Maybe it would be easier to find a Euro spec example over a US spec one if you search ones for sale over there? An alternative (and one that I am equally wanting) would be a Euro spec 306 gti-6. I don't know if you are familiar with those models but I'd love to find a clean example and import. There was one a while back on Cars&Bids (an auction site if you're not familiar) and it was available for auction located here in the US. Nice example in black.
In 5 1/2 years and 20K miles of ownership my SM has never left me stranded. Amazing given that this now a 50 year old car. The 405 Mi16 also performed almost flawlessly in my 3 years of ownership. It only left me semi stranded once due to a bad ignition control module. I was able to get it re-fired and complete my journey home after waiting for 20 minutes. I HAVE A PEUGEOT 1990 GRI with red i so its very very extremely saved now its been around 9 years without register and just staying in my garage , so i won't to know how much could cost if I want to sale , and don't forget its all with button windows and everything its a bit of special edition , color is like open blue sky ! and it very very saved its not have to mile I think its even in Peugeot fabrique don't have any one more save or with extreme less mile !! thank you .... !!
I Drove one of these Peugeot's 405m16 in my video game Racing in Car II, did not think it was a real car. the dash and steering look exactly the same in the video game. lol in the game it just has a square where the Lion is on the grill and steering wheel
Thank you, regrettably I've since sold it, although it do go to a collector. The XU9J4 would come on cam at about 4,500RPM and pull hard to its 7K redline. It was very much a "rally" car style motor and never gave me a lick of trouble, even with 160K miles showing on the odd when I sold it.
@@autosnob Mine had 245K on the engine with no engine work and it was as sweet as a nut. The only things that ever failed were the distributor cap and the throttle body, both easy fixes. Other consumables and the rear axle had to be sorted though thats just par for the course. Wish that I had never sold mine. Cannot find a good one nowadays for love nor money.

The 1.9l XU9J4 had 160bhp in the UK, the 2l XU10 had 150bhp. There was also a Mi16x4 in the UK with the XU9J4 engine @160bhp, don't know if there was ever a Mi16x4 with the XU10. Didn't bother to ever look it up, was never really interested in the XU10.

Not really. They are pretty simple to work on and due to the number of 405s that were sold globally parts are still plentiful.

juan martin ortiz I believe this is a Euro import to the US, an Mi16 Phase 1, Xu9J4 1.9l 16V. I’m not sure whether it’s the D6C or DFW motor though.
@@khunphruek DFW. America had regulations for a CAT at that time but EU did not. D6C was europe only. :). And that changed in 1990 also.
The 1.9l XU9J4 had 160bhp in the UK, the 2l XU10 had 150bhp. There was also a Mi16x4 in the UK with the XU9J4 engine @160bhp, don't know if there was ever a Mi16x4 with the XU10. Didn't bother to ever look it up, was never really interested in the XU10.
