Love these cars, and I'm American! Too bad this model couldn't save Peugeot in the United States. I really liked the styling of the 505 and 405, and they had a geat ride/handling balance and excellent brakes. If only more Americans took notice, Peugeot's fate in this country could have been different. These days, most Americans wouldn't have a clue about these cars, no memory of their existence, and that is sad.
Love these and they're known as excellent cars here in France. Too bad americans didnt get the diesel and turbo diesel versions, those had incredible economy and the usual pug reliability. The 106 is also a car I think would have had a good deal of success overseas...
The Peugeot 405, even the basic 70bhp 1.9D 405 GLD versions, had a ride/handling balance that was pretty much optimal. Very few cars before or since it have been able to strike that compromise. It rode really well and had the sort of wheel-travel that made mid-corner bumps not an issue, but still turned in keenly and cornered well.
Always thought this was Peugeot's best, though the 406 after it came close, when they really had their stuff together, to a certain extent they still do in certain models, moreso than any other make.
I saw a Peugeot 405 in my neighborhood as I grew up. I always thought it was driven by a Moroccan ambassador because I didn't know these were also sold in the US.

Sadly, the 405 wasn’t the car to turn around Peugeot’s fortunes in the US. They’d be gone from our shores by 1992.
owned and Mi16 was a great car. The interior had a wonderful leather scent and the engine loved to rev. Got a lot of thumbs up from Europeans
Had a 405S, and it never failed to leave me stranded.
This was an 80s car that looks like a 1996 lol. I hope I run across one for sale one day
I always loved this car since I saw it in 1990
Most of the mi16's in the UK got thier engine ripped out and stuck in 205 gti's. Now thats a weapon.

Everytime he pronounces the "Peu" like "Poo", a part of me dies.
$20k in 1988. That’s why it failed.

I miss my 405 so much. One day I will

I saw one of these late last month.
Damn shame we never got the 205, particularly the GTi, the Rallye...maybe even the t16 in limited numbers.
I wish we still got Peugeot here in the US
Those intros go on forever.
Here in the UK the Mi16 came with bigger side mouldings ,side skirts and different bumpers than the normal versions.
Owned this car great memories
