    bravo!!!! I WAS STUDYING FOR MY PART107 WITH A DIFFERENT VIDEO AND GOT STUMPED ON A PRACTICE EXAM QUESTION. I found your video and if clarified the issue. The answer they had on the practice test was WRONG!!!! With you explaining Sky Vector and showing how the cross hairs work and the coordinates in the top right of the screen verified they were wrong. This is going to be a useful self test for me. I can pull up any airport, put the cross hairs on it and then get my coordinates and check against Sky Vector. I am happy to be a new subscriber to your channel. Keep up the GREAT work!!!!

    Over 4 decades ago, I am not even married yet, but as a dealership tech, I was given the job of "OJT" the new guy. Strange or a little odd guy about 4-5 years older and one day, he ask me if I knew anything about flying or airplanes. Yes, my uncle has three, two of which are crop dusters and he started with questions. I knew the mechanics but not the flight path & navigation very well.
    Thank you for you helping figure out the minutes and clearly pointing out latitude and longitude. This is something that becomes a passing thoughts from time to time, perhaps OCD and find something I have to do 30 seconds later. I knew about "Greenwich" being "Zero" as I will re-watch but comes from the British sailing domination in the world, starting at the port as the world revolved around England. Not the other way around.

    Great video! Just to mention that each minute is 1NM (Nautical Mile) on the Earth. So each degree longitude (Meridians) or latitude (Parallels) are equal to 60NM. Also Northern hemisphere is represented with N or +, where southern hemisphere is represented with S or -. That applies for East and West, where East is represented with E or + and West with W or minus. This might not be on the exam but just good to know.

    when I put my GPS the lat is like 30 degrees but when I put the 87 degrees it puts a 0 in front of the 87, it's a Garmin echomap chirp 94sv is this normal and the same thing as just plain 87 degrees? thanks, I'm new in the waypoint world, trying to set up some reefs to fish

    7:40 In this case, hundredths of a minute are displayed, not seconds. Note the decimal point:
    15.51' = 15.51 minutes (i.e. 15 minutes and 30.6 seconds)
    15'51" = 15 minutes, and 51 seconds (i.e. 15.85 minutes)
    The good news is, if you're off by only a fraction of a minute, you're still in the ballpark.

    It confuses me that the horizontal lines measure north to south when they run east to west and the vertical lines measure east to west when they run north to south..why is that?

      Best way to remember it is, think of a ladder and how you climb it. The horizontal lines are like rungs on the ladder taking you North or South. If you can remember that the only other one is the longitudinal lines which are East and West.

    I question your comment about seconds, the chart at the top shows W 106 deg. 43.43 min. which I believe to be 43 43/100 min>>>> am I not correct???? It shows fractional degrees not 106° 43' 43".

      14:28 you refer to 14º 20.2' as degrees min. sec. it is 14 degrees 20.2 min. or 14 deg 20 min 12 sec

    what are the big/little numbers on the charts? 2:08 .....the big three and little four, 3/2, 3/7 etc?

      That is the safe flight altitude for the box that the number is in meaning if you flew at 3200' in a box labeled 32 you would clear all obstacles by 300-500'. Not to relevant for Drone operators but you should know what it means. Remember on the test they give you a book called the supplement book which has all the charts and graphs you'll need to reference for the test. There is a sample legend in the book just as there is on a paper sectional chart. You can also find this on www.skyvector.com if you want an E-Version on a chart.

    I have a question i hope you can answer,, I typed in my address into a Lat & lon finder online,,, for example, It returned a 40.something, and a -80.... that negative sign in front of the 80 through me off... Is there a Negative 80 degree's in the USA,,, Im confused...

      Because we are west of the prime meridian in Greenwich England (which is 0 for lines of longitude) it is a minus degree up to 180 degrees. So if we were looking top down at a globe, everything from 0-180 degrees west of the 0 degree longitude would be a minus. Everything east would be positive. The US sits mostly between the 69 and 124 degree lines of longitude.

    im sorry im having the worst time trying to figure something out. you went from the 43rd parallel 15 minutes north. why did you start at the 30 minute hash mark? could in theory you just start from the baseline 43 and go up 15? im really trying to figure it out. thank you.

      BJamie, can you add the time mark from the video in the reply and I’ll take a look. Usually you can always start with one of the bolder lines to get a jump start on counting minutes. Sometimes it’s easier to count down from a visible line if the starting lines are obscured with airspace lines and airports.

    Hi, I'm a bit confused. At 12:10 you say the coordinate is N44 degrees, 22 minutes and 90 seconds. How is it possible to have 90 seconds? I thought the minutes and seconds maxed out at 60?! You then call it "point nine". Does this mean point nine of a minute? If so, shouldn't it say 54? (54 seconds is .9 of a minute) Edit: It appears that there are 100 seconds in each minute on the sky vector chart. I've just scrolled through the map and watched the co ordinates change. The seconds get to 99 before the next minute is registered. Is this normal? (I'm new to all of this)

    N44 22.90' But 90 > 60 seconds. So numbers after the decimal point are fractions of 100% not seconds I believe that's why

    You have a mistake at 9:08 where you state that the 41-second mark is slightly less than halfway to the next minute. This is false and would only be true if there were 100 seconds between minutes. However, since there are 60 seconds between minutes then 41 is slightly MORE than halfway to the next minute.
    You made the same mistake at 12:50 by stating that 43 seconds is almost halfway to the next minute.

      Dan you are correct when you state that there are 60 seconds not 100 in a min. My description probably didn’t come out as clear as it should have and when I’m counting down to the sec, it’s more of an estimation at a glance for me. Sorry for the confusion.

      Dan, can you explain why at 12:10, the cooridinate at the top of his chart is written as 22 minutes and 90 seconds? It reads 22'.90. As you say, there are only 60 seconds in a minute so how is it possible to have this reading of 90?

    Ok ... the idiots (or really smart people trying to make other people know they are dumb) in the 15th century (or in Ancient Greece ... whom ever is guilty) should have named these lines Horizontal and Vertical vs L & L. Who is with me on this? Horizontal tells us how far north and south. Vertical tells us how far east and west. Horizontal is latitude. Vertical is longitude. My head hurts. I should have paid attention in 4th grade.
