"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13, KJV)." Thanks Film Detective for uploading this entertaining, provocative, and suspenseful picture.

Edith Cavell originated from Norfolk UK, in our city of Norwich Norfolk, her body lies at the cathedral and there is a lovely monument in her memory, i often go to see it. She is our heroine, she cared for all sick, she had no interest in sides and for that she was shot.

I'm embarrassed that I had never heard of this absolutely amazing, selfless and brilliant woman who was indeed martyred just for showing mercy! How absolutely diabolical that the German court gave her no credit at all for having shown mercy even to wounded Germans! I can't help but wonder if the Germans executing POWs (and perhaps other atrocities) and this execution of Edith Cavell were part of the reason such harsh penalties were imposed on Germany after World War I, in the Treaty of Versailles. And those harsh conditions in turn led to the rise of Nazism and Hitler in Germany. The 1939 release date of this film was surely no accident; no doubt it was meant to counter the rising influence of Nazi Germany. God rest Nurse Cavell's noble soul, and may her heroic example never be forgotten!

The Versailles treaty was nothing like as harsh as the Brest Litovsk treaty imposed on Russia, by the Germans, in 1917!

The frightening thing is that within months of this film being released the Germans started the whole savage business over again, and another generation of selfless heroes had to step forward to defend freedom.

It’s the stories of nurses like these that made me become a RN 24 years ago. I admire these nurses that did the right thing, no matter what! Nurses who passionately care for all despite the occupation’s rule, mainstream media or state sponsored propaganda.

Thank you for sharing this explication of humane interaction in time of war, courage in the face of overwhelming odds and a firm belief in the ministry of Jesus Christ at all times. On a technical note: please consider remastering the sound for better, clearer and important aspects of the characters' roles.

Powerful film. Thanks for sharing. I never understand why the sound work in British films is so terrible. The music soundtracks and sound effects tracks are usually set high and loud, nearly blasting while the dialogue track is muted lower - and this one, scratchy. Still, this is a moving bit of history, which I've watched a couple of times. Classic

    Edith Cavill is a Saint
The night before her execution: she said ...
" I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone ".
    She was 49y.o.
She lived her life... Christ like !!!

We have Radio Cavell in Oldham which is a hospital radio service on 1350 kHz a.m. but they give no details of who she was. I assumed she was a nurse but didn't know anything about her.
