- Gracie Fields own personal favourite film with Monty Woolley A delightful union of these two stars, who went on to appear in Molly And Me.
The film is from Arnold Bennett's Buried Alive, An artist(Woolley) returning from abroad, takes on the role of his valet, to escape press coverage. Priam Farrell passes away on his way back to the England, The confusion who is the real Farrell continues, Complications between Farrell and his ex wife, and his Butlers girl friend cause mayhem.
(Fields) is in fine form in this film, and the screen sparkles between both of the stars.

I never thought I'd live to see the day I find a movie with Monty Woolley and Franklin Pangborn both talking together.
Wonderful movie - no violence, nudity, or foul language. A welcome relief to say the least. Excellent acting and screenplay as well! Thank you kindly for the upload.

Monty Woolley was a marvellous actor. His patrician and gentlemanly manner together with his velvet, polished voice, graced several films. A truly great actor who dominated the screen.
All true...except Monte was not "gentlemanly" (on purpose) in "THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER". He had some memorable insults.

i agree. im old too, and it wasnt till half through the movie i remembered ive seen it before. six months from now i will have forgotten again and enjoy it a third time! 🧓
As an artist/painter I always look forward to films based on artists/painters. There are hardly any films based on art, painters, artists. Most are highly romanticized and inauthentic.. unreal... but this is so real in so many ways... Way ahead of time.. 1943!!

Look up an old 30's-40's movie with synopsis of a homely painter that falls in love with a con artist who turns the art into a done-by- this-gorgeous-woman cash cow and eventually, murder.
The level of reaction to the quite odd style of art if even for a movie was most amusing.
Monty Woolley was such a very good actor, so handsome, distinguished and funny.
What a delightful match. I just read in a letter my Father wrote in Europe while serving in the Army during WWII, that the men watched this movie So of course I had to see it, too!

Absolutely LOVE the movies of the 30's, 40's and 50's and all the marvelous actors and actresses that make them what they are. Cannot stomach the movies seen today, so I am thankful to find these precious gems❤❤❤

I agree with you! Most especially the British films that, to me, perfected the subtle "eyes show a slight surprise" or "shoulders slump" and you know that there person is affected by what's just happened. The person may not even have their face towards the camera! It is TRUE ART!
I'm grateful for these films. This is a gem that I'd not even heard of until 2 weeks ago! For 76 years this beauty has been hiding (at least for my life of 61 years) from repeatedly viewing!

It is a rare thing to not fast forward a CZcams movie. This is one of those special films. The performances are brilliant
The glorious Gracie Fields who, in the 1930s, was the highest paid film star in the world, so popular was she with British audiences thanks to her marvelous comedy timing, endearing personality and beautiful singing voice. Only the briefest sound of that voice in this film, but a good, unusual script and great chemistry with Monty Woolley. It's a pity they only made one more film together, and that Gracie didn't make a lot more. And also Laird Cregar as the art dealer who died tragically going at 28.
Actually, they made two movies together and it was wonderful as well.
The other movie was called “Molly and Me”.

His manservant is the brilliant & very funny Eric Blore! Blore was in some of the Astaire/ Rogers films too. ❤
Eric Blore appeared in over eighty motion pictures. He began his acting career playing mostly military types and bluebloods, but it is portrayals of butlers, valets, and waiters that he is best remembered for.
Love, love, love (all) of Gracie Fields movies. I watched Molly & Me twice, and I would watch it again and again. She can sing, dance, and her comedic timing is perfect!
What a delightful and clever little film. Just saw it for the first time ever. In fact I didn't know about Gracie Fields until this film. Very familiar with Monty Woolley, Gracie Fields, Una O'Connor, Laird Cregar, Alan Mowbray, and Melville Cooper from other works of art. Such a smart wife, how she complemented him. A gem worth watching with someone you love.

these were the type of people my grandmother had as neighbours when i was a very small girl in the 1960's. I always loved visiting their house, full of art (painted by him), a wonderful garden they worked together that felt like fairyland whenever you came inside their gate. And music. They lived next door to a saw mill, but they created their own little bit of paradise anyway. Vale Reggie and Louise

It’s difficult to believe this is Gracie Fields. She’s certainly altered her accent and behaviour from the more famous films I’ve seen her in. It’s a revelation to see her in a different role. A proper actress!
Wonderful "gentle", English-style movie...watched this a couple of times...very under rated. Great plot, excellent acting from all these wonderful character actors. A must see! 10 out of 10 stars

The first time I saw Woolley in a movie was his role as the professor in a Bishop's wife with Cary Grant and Loretta Young. He turned a small part into a masterful role. I think Iwould have liked him in person. Just a fine way of carrying himself.

My mom was a housewife. A wonderful mom. I give my mom all the credit for my life and the fact she raised me with God given values. She gave me those values to pass on to my children. Her unselfishness is unfound today. That’s the problem in families. Can’t find ppl willing to give of their life for others especially their children. What a gift.
I had the same upbringing. My mom was amazingly dedicated. I look back at the things that she did and now I cannot even imagine how much work she put out for decades to take care of five children and her husband. We were constantly on the move. My father's job brought us to a move every year to two maybe three years at the most. She handled all of that as well as dealt with a physical ailment that she had. She was an amazing woman. I wish I had spent more time with her than I did.
Totally agree! People are self centered, nowadays, and think theres no "identity" or "reward" in sacrificing for family and home!

Brenda, this was one of my mother's favorite movies but I didn't remember the name. She was a huge Anglophile, particularly of this sort of wry humor. I too felt akin to my mother again while enjoying this.

I enjoyed it very much, particularly the first five minutes with Mr. Leek (too bad, he had to leave us so soon in order to make the basic plot work) and later the court room scenes with the miming of the judge and the lawyers. But why only praise Whoolley, Whoolley, Wholley, Fields, Fields, Fields ad nauseam?
Here is to the unsung hero Laird Cregar (1914-1944 (sic)), who played the art dealer Clive Oxford in this here film. In 1942, he was the very impressive (treacherous) go-between in THIS GUN FOR HIRE, one of the best classic films noirs ever, with Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd. The script was based on Graham Greene's novel A GUN FOR SALE (1936). Despite his beard(s) here, I recognized Laird Cregar immediately, first by his voice and later even by his face. So sad he died at the age of 30.

Gracie was a huge star of the 30s and 40s in the UK. She was a down to earth type from the music halls.
She would have , but was black balled for marrying an italian man. They plugged vera lyne who in my opinion was no where near as good as our Gracie. That's the establishment for you
You mean other than 36 notable songs, 11 movies, many tours for soldiers during the war, owning her own theater and performing in theatre and TV including singing on her 80th birthday and being given a Dameship by the Queen three years before her death? She was also ranked in the top 10 favorite British actors for many years. Her first stage appearance was 1905 and her last appearance was Merv Griffin 1979.
Oh my, that is a short career! And what a little known treasure! She was famous to all Britain and had a four movie contract in the US. I left out many other awards and notables!

Thank you for the upload. Enjoying these wonderful classic Movies. Grew up watching these and learning all the trivia that went with them in my youth during the 70s on TV in San Diego County from a guy everyday at 3 named Bob Dale. He even played silent films every once in awhile. What you learned about the actors and actresses how they made the movies, what the studios were like, was truly informative and not gossip as it is today. He showed us how before color atmospheric painted shadowing was important. How people like Laurel and Hardy created their tricks and how dangerous they were unlike jackass. There was so much that he imparted then I'm sure there were many kids who went on later in life to become part of the movie industry because of what he taught. I know that I won pretty much any trivia game that included the movies cinema photography film stars Etc. It was sad as he got older that they started to cut his showdown from five days a week to only a couple days a week and didn't bring on someone younger to replace him. the community rallied around him because we really liked what he did and mothers we relied on him as something to do in the afternoon with their children that was educational they could trust and wasn't a stupid cartoon show but the television industry changed and they felt showing these old movies wasn't important anymore even though by then he even included colored movies. instead you got reruns of the 1970s laugh tracks.
Bob was also the weatherman for the television station and what's funny is when they replaced him with someone younger we were never able to trust the weather again as well as we had been able to trust him.

Oops, spoke too soon, sort of, Ms Fields was well known in the U. S. according to Wikipedia. And it would seem she was just as wonderful a woman inreal life as she is in this movie role.
I really loved this movie. I'm not sure how many wives have the disposition of this one these days. So giving, so deeply understanding and patience. I know there are some wonderful women but I think this one went far beyond what most people would.
@Helene you don't sound familiar with the British middle class, as it was in days gone by. I knew a lady just like this one, when i was a little girl. She lived for her man, while preserving her own pert independence of spirit - just like this film! They adored each other, and were friends of my grandparents so i saw a fair bit of them growing up.
My Mother was like this for my Dad. Although he didn’t appreciate it it in his youth…WW2 vet, he grew to deeply love her and appreciate her in the end. She always said “he came back a different man after the war”, she stuck with him, and in the end she got her husband back.
