    I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for...

    Lived in SA since 1960, I have loved everything about this town except the heat/humidity until recently. Two things are ruining SA, the first is the flood of new people (mostly Hipsters), and the second is the gentrification (mostly by and for the new Hipsters). It's the same in all cities but for SA, the "big city with the small town feel" it is having a larger impact than most, it's completely taken our identity. The best thing about living in SA was even though we were a huge city we still new our neighbors, we shared potato salad on the 4th in Brackenridge, we had block parties together, our daughters attended each others quinceañeras, our sons learned to fish together in Salado creek, we waved at each other when we passed on the road, we gathered together at Fiesta for the Battle of the Flowers parade, we smiled and said howdy as we passed on the sidewalks even if we'd never met before, and no matter if you lived in Las Palmas, Jefferson Heights, Donaldson Terrace, Monte Vista, Village North, or any other neighborhood on any side of town you felt comfortable going to and were welcomed in any other neighborhood. We were more than a big city, we were Tejas, we prided ourselves on being friendly and welcoming, on helping out before being asked, on checking on our elderly, on taking care of each other. All that is slipping away, has slipped away. If you have lived in SA for some time, 20-years or more, then you too remember how it used to be, SA was different than any other big city anywhere, we were special. Our soul has been taken and in its place are horrid. new 800-unit 5-story plastic apartments full of plastic hipsters who care only for themselves and don't know and don't care to understand the culture of SA or the peasants their shiny new building displaced. It's truly a shame, and to make it worse still they look down on us as though we are the problem. Those of us who would go out of our way to give them a helping hand are made to feel we are in the way simply for existing. So come or don't, moved here or not, what you will find here now is just a carbon copy of any miserable big city, a bunch of self-centered hipsters, plus unbearable heat and humidity. Sounds like hell, and it is. Vaya Con Dios, y'all.

      boomer perspective. takes zero-accountability for the hippy mindset they let permeate, which morphed into accepting everything and everyone up to the point of drag shows for kids. Either the next generation will fix it, or what you're describing here "slipping away" is going to repeat over and over again. Hard men create good times. Good times create soft men. Soft men create hard times. wash. rinse. repeat. enjoy your retirement/pension and equity in your home. On point. Native to SA and dearly miss the way it used to be. I miss the military pride the city used to have. I miss the slower pace and friendly people. I miss the mentality of preservation. Work brought me out to Boerne 7yrs ago never thinking that I'd develop the feeling of loathe when deciding whether to go into San Antonio. I avoid it whenever I can. This is coming from a 38yr old woman, shows how much the city has changed in a short amount of time.

    As someone who drives all around this city for work, nobody on these "San Antonio explained" videos ever seems to talk about how large portions of the city look dilapidated/run down. It is an old city, I get it, but a lot of it is just people not taking care of their neighborhoods. Also there are stray animals everywhere. It is common to see packs of dogs roaming around in certain areas. I like San Antonio, don't get me wrong, but you need to talk about it.

      It’s definitely changed a ton. No doubt about that but there’s not a single Texas city that hasn’t blown up. I still think, compared to the others, especially Austin, San Antonio is still the most calm and the least crowded of any of the others.

  • @georgegravette1132

    Keep in mind that, although you can buy a lot more house for your money in San Antonio, you're going to pay an arm and a leg not just in property taxes, but in UTILITIES, to cool your house all summer and warm it in the winter. Furthermore all the bigger, newer houses are in "developments," "planned communities" and "gated communities," meaning you'll pay HOA dues on top of all that. Texans who supposedly take pride in their freedom and independence will pay for these mini-governments to tell them they can't work on their cars in their own driveways, or that they MUST water their lawns, even during drought restrictions.

    I agree with most of your pros and cons but one HUGE con that somehow didn't make the list are the wages. They are pretty low for a city of this size, and not just for service positions but across the board. I wouldn't recommend moving here unless you're in a specific field (example: medical/military) or work from home for a company that pays more then local companies do. The cost of living isn't low enough to justify the depressed wages, especially with recent inflation.

    • @LifeinSATX
      @LifeinSATX  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I always find wage averages to be misleading. Of course it has a ton to do with the demographics overall but I know of multiple fast food restaurants in and around the city starting off their pay at $15/hr. I also have friends and family working in warehouses that make $22-$25/hr. I agree that it’s overall lower but it has a lot to do with the lack of large corporate positions compared to Austin, Dallas, or Houston in my opinion.

    • @andrewgoss6486
      @andrewgoss6486 Před 5 měsíci +2

      @SaritaBizZenBOPPin I primarily moved to SA because of the diversified, long-term economic growth. Michigan is a state in decline with a declining economy, high taxes that are increasing, high cost of living that is increasing, and a state budget on the verge of collapse due to Granholm and Whitmer intentionally chasing out the people who provide the bulk of the tax revenue.
      I prefer the warmth over the heat, palm trees over potholes, sunny days over gray skies, and freedom over constant government encroachment.
      I don't miss the high crime, blight, and poverty of Detroit. I prefer peace, beauty, and potential. Texas is what California once was: the land of opportunity. Texas is what America should be.

    San Antonio is going through an identity crisis right now. The locals who have been here for years describe SA as if it was Orson, Indiana (the fake small town on The Middle). The transplants (from all across the country, not just CA) see a city with crazy potential, but it's that "small town" mindset that is keeping SA from becoming fully-realized as a city.

      100% agree with comment about the kind people here. That’s one of my favorite things as well. Idk about homeless comment though. I see a few here and there downtown but that’s it. I also 100% disagree with the poor and ugly comment. Every city in the world has its impoverished areas unfortunately. That’s just the way of the world but making a generalization like that isn’t accurate at all.

      @kencreel5660 I don’t think that says anything about crime in San Antonio specifically. Leaving stuff in the back of a truck is going to lead to people potentially stealing it. Job sites are constantly having things stolen from them no matter where you are. You could be in the best neighborhood in the safest suburb and that could happen. I’ve seen it first hand being a commercial project manager before I got into real estate. And I’ve lived here my entire life, have always driven a nicer truck, and have never had it broken into or had anything stolen from it. I don’t think it’s fair to make assumptions after two experiences you had.

      This statistic has more to do with geography, districting, and department coverage areas than it does with your safety or the chance of you being a crime victim in SA. I know for a fact it is far more dangerous in some small towns around the state than it is anywhere within SA. Of course, crime has risen in SA over the years, and it jumps in spurts after every disaster brings a flood of new people. Like everywhere, if you act like a victim and/or don't practice situational awareness you'll likely end up a victim, if you hang with criminals or invite criminals into your home you'll likely be criminalized, or if you act like an ass to people or are just plain stupid you're more likely to be a victim. Be nice, play safe, act responsibly, you'll be fine.
