The music, costumes, paintings, decorations, and performances are of the highest form of art. Such beautiful contribution and a gift to cultural heritage and humanity.
There used to be a version of this on youtube that included the credits, and I liked the final music during the credits so much, I used to play it over and over. I miss it.
Lovely, but I so wish there was a narrator to explain to us who have no Japanese, what the storyline is and what the gestures signify so we can fully enjoy the story of the characters. I don't want to miss anything of significance.
I don't speak Japanese either, but I think I understand the premise of this play since there is a different, extended version of it on YT. The woman in the middle is named Hanako (I think) and she's convinced these monks to allow her see the inauguration ceremony of a new bell, as women are not allowed to be present, on the condition she dances for them. The original bell was destroyed by a giant serpent burning it, alongside the priest they fell in love, when he was trapped inside. Turns out, this dancer IS that serpent (though I think this is the reincarnation as she was killed during that event,) though I don't know why she wanted to infiltate the event in the first place. I don't know what is is said during the signing portion either, as a translation of those lyrics were not provided. I'm sorry I can't help you out any more than this. It says a lot about kabuki that it can still fascinate and capture our attention despite the langauge barrier.
At 19:33, do you know what the 7 red hats represent? Red fruit segments, flower petals... what type? Symbolism is important to me. Thank you in advance if you know and share. ❤

The kabuki and nihon buyo is amazing
