    Regarding Jordan's final point that everyone has a darkness inside them, there is an old Cherokee proverb that goes like this.
    The elder would say to the child, "Inside everyone is two wolves, one good and one evil, that are locked into a fight that never ends, both fighting to kill the other".
    The child would say "Which wolf wins?".
    Then the elder would reply "The one that you feed".

A child that is allowed to run on purely it's own nature - tuns into a monster very quickly lol

    What an absolute genius.
    In a previous lecture, Peterson discussed how he actively observed what he says and to not say things that make him appear weak.
    In this lecture, he could have easily said he was “bullied” for being mouthy as a kid but that would have come off as weakness subconsciously to his audience.

      @@ergaberga8356 I see nothing wrong with admitting that you were a victim of something in fact I believe it is important for the healing process after said event. As long as you don't stay a victim and adopt a victim mentality. You must admit and acknowledge so you can heal and then grow stronger. If you never admit to yourself what happened you may have a hard time healing, for in order to heal you must acknowledge that you were hurt/bullied/victimized etc.

    • @MaskedMass
      @MaskedMass Před 3 lety +1

      You misunderstood him.
      It's not that he doesn't want to appear weak, he isn't that vain. He doesn't say things that make him "feel" weak. What he specifically described was that when he told the truth, when he said something that truly aligned with his inner self, he felt strong and he felt whole. And when he didn't tell the truth, he felt weaker. Like he was coming apart at the seams.
      That's what he meant by avoiding saying things that made him weak.

    What he said at the end about realizing how he's not so different from there inmates--and how we needed to respect the dark side of ourselves--is _so_ refreshing to hear!
    When I openly talk about the things I have felt (never done)--or even acknowledged that I have a "dark side"--people look at me like I'm strange. I realized, through various situations in my past, that _no one_is above anything. To put it another way (this is how I explain it to people), "everyone is capable of anything...it simply takes the right set of circumstances to bring those actions forth".
    We need more people like Jordan Peterson too have the important conversations.

    With all due respect to his brilliance, only an absolute nerd like Jordan Peterson would have the realization about his inner monster through meditative self analysis. Most of us figure it out through experiencing our capacity for brutality first hand when life puts our backs against the wall.

      WorldByTheTale That hurt to read. I abused drugs for close to a decade and I've done things one can 'marvel' at. Even worse, in a way, I was proud of my self somehow for experiencing that which I've experienced yet surviving. Even after getting clean I used my past to manipulate my present. Only a year or two ago, through, constantly hitting a wall within myself I realized my actual value. No, I don't beat my self up about it, no one should. But one must understand the depth of a human in order to begin the search of a right perspective.

    The answer? If I was literally fighting for my life. If someone was trying to kill me, or my children. Or if the pay - off was so massive that pounding on someone's leg with a hammer could, say, save the world, or something along those lines!

      @jjcohen-briggs9236 Před 7 lety +8

      See, that's the thing that I think he is driving at: You would "like to think not" but no matter how moral or righteous we may think that we are, there's a personality buried deep down inside that is capable of absolutely horrific things.
      If we choose not to explore what might make that part of us manifest itself, there's absolutely no chance of us preventing it from coming out given the right circumstances. However, if we are aware of what would have to occur for that to happen, there's a chance that we can take appropriate action to stop it before it comes out.

    Jordan, your comments on the danger of the intellect is spot on, as one would expect. I don't know, I'm a relatively intelligent person, and I have always been very conscious of the dangers of it, such as becoming prideful, stagnant, complacent etc. So, I am intensely self-critical, to the point where I frustrate those around me because of my, frankly, self-destructive tendencies.
    I think a balance has to be met. If you, as an intelligent person, refuse to acknowledge value in any of your work, why would you carry on doing them? Is it because others see value in it? If they do, how do you stop them and their compliments from going to your head? Perhaps a certain, realistic, level of love for your work is necessary to actually stay humble and carry on doing work.

How can you do such self-examination?? It's so interesting to me. I for example also think, like he did, I could not do that. And I had an experience where I thought of hurting somebody physically, like for the first time ever I genuinely considered that in that tough situation. But it was more like preparing to defend myself, more than attacking. But to do such harm and pain completely unnecessarilly, instead of just pacify the person is completely beyond me.

    Isn't this hypocritical 1:56?
    The danger of the intellect does not tend towards pride and arrogance, although most authorities of it's possession do so but rather more so in their philosophy behind the intellect, this leads to an intellectual laziness which leads to a lack of critical thinking for the sake of pigeonholing the many minutiae within argument's/debates in the world.
    There are too many aspects to consider which is why people try to create any general consensus to simplify the complexity in understanding human societies but an overall consensus without reverting to mathematical models or very logical metrics cannot fully cover all aspects within the world to describe human speculative arguments.

    One positive of all these Jordan Peterson lectures is that people like myself can learn and improve the life of myself and the people around me, with the teachings of a highly decorated psychologist from a highly regarded university in America that would cost me thousands to go and study.
    One negative I have just realised is that these videos could also help people on the other end of morality, who want to commit acts of malevolence.

    I can't really remember where I read this but anyway ' if you can't push it pull it with one hand I build with the other I destroy ' I am sure that the who are you going to be is a fabrication from the perfectionistic point of view anyway, I am happy about myself that I do not piss people, off too much whilst being hedonistic I am a good listener yet I paint the pictures that I feel so drawn to and if I merge them with myself that I can see a strong individual and a colourful pattern that works with all emotions as any human advisably should but to forge and break down are all destructive and creative processes that unfortunately are all part of the full package to be and we'll never be perfect it's pointless striving for perfection nothing is perfect we need to be who we are and go according to our strengths and weaknesses to work on and I truly believe that when you're doing that eventually you merge and forge a stronger individual be pessimistic and think for an optimistic solution nothing is black and white it's all grey

    Jordan Peterson: You can be so much more than you are
    Me: I know I can be more than I am. I just can't figure out how! haha
    I want to be an engineer and I'm certainly capable of it. I'm probably capable of doing much better than that, but an engineer is what I want. My problem is that I hate studying, so uni is out of the option. Studying is boring and takes too long. I mean generally you only have to tell me something once and I will get it, but not everyone does and I hate having to wait around for everyone else. If there was a way for them to just give me all of my assignments and I can just get on with it and hand them all over in a couple of months and they could give me my diploma I would love that! But it's obviously not possible. In the end I would rather not go through it and not get my job than suffer for a couple of years and do the job afterwards.
    An apprenticeship or being a trainee seems appealing but I'd have to take a large pay hit to do it and I can't afford that. I have too many responsibilities.
    Ah well. That's the way it is I guess. Just best to keep looking for opportunities and just enjoy life while I'm at it. Not everything is gonna work out perfectly in life. I suppose it's my fault for not finding my calling until after my school years too. I should've worked harder when I was younger, not like I regret how I spent my school years.
