It amazes me that opera houses still force this dated silliness on us. One needs only review the comments left on this site to see that it is a tiny minority who wants to see these ridiculous (I'm sure they would rather have them thought of as imaginative) productions. The rest of us are fed up.
Who in god's name hired this guy with the scrawny, little voice to sing Macbeth?
I worry this role requires too much meat in the middle and lower registers to be healthy for Netrebko's voice. Sure, she sings through it, but with what consequences? The recent performances at the Met were glorified in the Times, but I heard a vibrato that often widened into a true wobble, which is not a good sign. She needs to be careful, especially in an enormous house like the Met. It would be a shame to lose such a talent early to bad judgement. Think of how few singers have ever really embraced this bear of a part. There's good reason for that. It requires a very oddly assembled bag of tricks.
And who really wants to see an opera chorus in their underwear in bad lighting? They tend to look better with their clothes on. (As most of us do.)

BRAVA!! ANNA THE GREAT! THE QUEEN OF OPERA! MAGNIFICENT PORTRAYAL OF LADY MACBETH! Anna Netrebko continues to dazzle with her beautiful strong voice and her keen sense of drama. This looks to be a bold production helping to bring opera into the 21st century and away from the boring, bland productions that opera is usually saddled with. The opera snobs will hate it, with their lorgnettes poised and tight fannies, but opera is starting to breathe again with stars like Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanca, Olga Peretyatko, Jonas Kaufmann, Piotr Beczala....the list is long and getting longer. You opera snobs, your type of opera is on the Joan Sutherland channel, always something boring on there.

***** I too like belcanto. My argument is with those who see opera only as belcanto and ignore the drama. I've gotten comments like "If I want drama, I'll go to the theater." RUBBISH! Opera is THEATER, as well as belcanto. To me Joan Sutherland was only half an artist. A belcanto specialist and zero in the drama category. That's why I ove Anna Netrebko. Not just a beautiful singer but a singing actor. Listen to her in the final scene from the MET'S Eugene Onegin with Kwiecen (Spelling?) Beautiful intense singing and drama that will tear your heart out. As to this production, I too love the traditional staging of Shakespeare, but I admire a director who thinks, is not afraid to step out of the box and attempt something new. Does it always work? No, but at least it's tried. I have seen IL TROVATORE countless times in many cities in over 50 years of attending opera and it always looked like the SAME production. How refreshing to see some of these new realizations of a great old opera. They don't all work but it will take a lot more than a crazy director to ruin the majesty and nobility of masterworks like Verdi and Shakespeare

emmanuel espinoza . Así es München. Te dejan cantar ciertos roles si tienes conexiones y amigos.

Sorry, but the Macbeth requires a Verdibariton at least if not a dramatic voice. The poor guy with his tiny lyric voice can´t be heard most of the time. Seems to be that in München "connections" are far more important as vocal power.

my friend, nowadays you can't be as picky as you could once. The great theaters don't have a penny, especially in Italy and beyond, and they pay the singers even two years late and in any case this is a job and you have to do what they ask you to bring home the loaf. The singer thinks of singing his part, and if the director is shit, the director puts his signature on the poster, not the singer ...

Hi Emil Meister. There are a quite a lot of scratches especially in the segmentation of the phrase : Si colmi il calice di vino... The syllables are over-pushed, thus bringing some conditional notes or whatever they can be called. Generally she does not have this ones, but trying to sing everything like Lady Macbeth for instance, more than of a triumph, has shown some problems of the voice.

Yes it was an utterly ridiculous production. I actually saw it. But German Opera houses always do weird modern and bizarre productions. Anna however did a very good job of the singing and generally musically it was good. She sang a really good una macchia except she didn't manage the "fil di voce" as per the score the way Callas let it float and die away but overall she did a very good job. Btw do you realise those white balls on the stage are skulls made out of some white plastic!!! What do they signify/ that Macbeth in his 17 year reign killed a lot of people? The choir is almost disastrous, perhaps because of the conductor and/or stage director. At first they weren't in time but then they recovered. The most annoying thing is the subdivision of the syllables that include the consonant "s" at the beginning of the word, perhaps due to insufficient knowledge of the Italian language. Example: "bie-chi ar-cani ... Sgo-men-ta-to da fan-tas-mi etc etc ..." For needs of musical quadrature words like fan-TAS-mi must be pronounced wrong: fan- ta-SMI but not everyone does it by saying at random. This neglect due to foreign (not Italian) choir directions produces an annoying hiss due to the lengthening of the "s" because some say it according to the rule of spoken language and some according to the musical need to move the "s" in the syllable next one. I'm trying Macbeth these days and my choir director just hint of making the same mistake eats us alive ...

Another hilarity is Netrebko in Il Trovatore - a German production, of course - which is performed as a pantomime. Pity because, apart from the guttural trills, she sings some good high notes. No facial movement or inner expression for acting, though. Regardless of whether someone is an opera buff or "snob" whatever that is - everyone has eyes and ears, right? Perhaps differing levels of seeing and hearing ability, though. Hence the disagreements.

Instead of directing the original story, the director most probably had his personal nightmares possibly with juvenile polutions, transfered onto a stage in order to cure his exhibitionism. The conductor went too fast and the result is a shambles: uglu performance, a lot of bad singing as well as ugly lady Macbeth, thank you very much for nothing!!!!

This is not Verdi. This is rubbish. And the voices are completely inappropriate for the roles of Macbeth and the Lady.

Netrebko is not a coloratura soprano. This and “Vieni T’affreta” make this a coloratura role. She does not have coloratura ability to handle this.
