Hyundai Genesis Trunk Fix

Trunk on a 2015 Genesis sedan will not stay in the up position due to a failed trunk strut/support. Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic nor do I work for Hyundai. This is for educational purposes only. If you choose to change strut it is at your own risk.

Thank you sir! I have a 12 Genny. Only had 3 clips under rubber and didn’t have a bag hook to remove. I did have to remove about 3 plugs from each side panel after I dropped the bag rack. No biggie! Done in about 45 minutes start to finish. Hyundai wanted $316.00 just for the two shocks! Bought from Amazon for under $40 and they fit perfectly. I recommend popping the clips up just a little for easier installation. They automatically lock into place when you push them on. Thanks again!!

I appreciate your attempt to help us Genesis owners from paying crazy money for simple fixes. My issue is similar to your except, my Smart Trunk will unlock but won't raise up as they should. I could not see exactly what you were doing when you were trying to attach the new Strut b/c it was too dark. Also, I miss the part where you attached both ends to wherever they were supposed to go?

Just look at the way your current struts are now. The new ones just pop into place. Take pictures it helps.

Do you know it the trunk is supposed to open automatically after unlocking trunk on the platinum and the regular genesis sedan? I have a 5.0 non platinum, mine does not open the trunk after unlocking. I didn’t even know if it is supposed to.

I think you have to have the powered trunk option on your car.

See 5:00 and 7:25. They’re facing opposite ways. Since it fits, probably no issue.

How did you reattach the weather stripping? Did you use some sort of adhesive?

It just clips back in. No adhesive needed

No, it already has some adhesive on there. Just set it back in.

About $41 dollars each from hyundai oem. Might find lower price through online hyundai dealerships or ebay. I paid $37 each but price might have risen a little.

Has anyone has issues with the rear arm rest not folding down. Mine won’t fold down at all but I don’t believe I should have to replace the whole unit

Try yanking on the arm rest pretty hard a few times. Others have had this issue, and it got easier over time. Look on genesisowners forum.com

am i the only one who figure out when he replaced with new one he put the rod side close to the rear seats where the thicker side should be :) i guess thats what they call reverse engineering :)

Hey great video, do you know how easy it is or if there are any guides online to help open my trunk harness up? Got the dreaded inner passenger taillight issue and I suspect it's from the trunk harness.
